4838.0. "Outdoor cat - Warning" by WILLEE::MERRITT () Thu Aug 08 1991 09:52

I do not want to start another indoor/outdoor note...but I do
feel a need to share this with those folks that do let there
    cats go outside.

Two night ago my little Dewey was coughing and almost looked
like he was choking. Dewey was still very active and eating
like a pig....so I almost ignored the symptoms figuring it
was just a cold or possibly a furball. But since Dewey was
a very sick undernourished stray when we took him in last
winter...I said "boy maybe we should visit the vet and put
him on medicine right away to stop it from getting worse
and spreading through my house." Thank god I took him.

The vet noticed that Dewey's tongue was inflamed and had
ragged edges. After a full examination...the vet said he
felt Dewey had eating a rodent that could have possibly
died from poison. Dewey was given a shot and has to take
Amoxi which the vet said would take care of the problem.
I was also informed to keep a very close eye on him for
the next day or two...but he did not feel this was life
    threatening.

This note is just to stress the need to visit your vet when
you see any weird symptoms. Thank god I just did not
    ignore this situation.

My cats go outside, they come inside, at least they have the choice

    Heather...my cats are indoor/outdoor cats as well...so I wasn't
writing the note to judge anyone. It was rather a warning that
I saw funny symptoms...almost ignored them...but was real glad
    I didn't.
