4788.0. "Aggressive behavior after shots" by MARX::BARLOW () Fri Jul 12 1991 14:19

Last night, my two cats got their yearly shots, distemper, leukemia
and rabies. They didn't hiss at the doctor and were both very
good. When we got home, Spike started hissing at Lady everytime
he saw her. Aside from that, he was normal, chasing his bell
and wanting to be petted. Well, this morning when I got up, Spike
was not around. (He usually greets me when I get out of the shower.)

Then he came out when I yelled, "breakfast!" But again he hissed
at his sister. He tried to go after her but I stopped him. Then
as I carried him into the other room, he hissed not at me but
sort-of at the air. Then he started hissing at my gym bag.

I am wondering if this aggressive behavior is normal. It doesn't
seem to be to me. I phoned the vet and she said that maybe he's
just sore and to bring him in if he's like this for 2 days.
Has anybody else had this happen?

4788.1AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR AFTER SHOTSCANYON::WARKMEISTERFri Jul 12 1991 14:419
My kitty, Heather, acted like this somewhat after I brought her home
from the vet. She is the only kitty in the household. I can't
remember which shots made her act like this. I too thought her
behavior was somewhat strange, however, I ignored it because I knew
she just had shots. She was just her silly old self the next day.
Of course if it had persisted, I would have taken her to the vet.
I wouldn't worry about it. Give them a few more days.

Yes, this sounds normal. besides outraged dignity, both cats smell
funny to each other from the vet office smells. It will take
a couple of days for the smells to wear off. Thank your lucky
stars that your vet doesn't have an assistant like the one mine
has, who wears perfume and cuddles Sweetie -- he smells funny to
everyone for about a week :-)

Ya, it's probably normal. With all my kitties , I've seen reactions
running the gambit from the grumblies to feverish and lethargic. Some
have no reaction at all. I had one cat that reacted to his LEUK shot
by being terribly ill and losing nearly 1/3 of his weight. That only
happened once, thank goodness. Most of the time they are fine. What
effects they have should be worn off within 48 hours. If not, I'd
call the vet back. they say most severe reactions will happen so
quickly that you'd still be with the vet. So they should be ok.

What I know about vaccination reactions:

In general, after any trip to the vet, kitties will smell funny
to each other and you will find hissing gand growling happening for a
    day or two.

Respiratory (sp?) vaccinations may give the cats the sneezes a little
bit for a day or two.

Leukemia vaccinations have two reactions: (1) occasionally a cat may
have a severe reaction, within the first 20 minutes after the shot. I
keep my cats at the vet's office during this time, because the vet can
leap in and help them. My vet has had two reactions of this type (in
sibling kittens) in the many hundreds of cats he has given Leukemia
shots to. My understanding is that this is aking to the dangerous
reaction some people and animals have to bee stings, etc, and can be
fatal (he saved the kittens) (2) usually after a Leukemia shot, my
guys are very tired for 12 to 24 hours. If it goes on longer than that
or if, earlier than that they seem to be in difficulty, bundle them
back to the vet. One danger hewre is if they are wiped out long
enough, they can get dangerously dehydrated.

4788.5Could be the rabies shotRDVAX::LEVINEPam LevineTue Jul 16 1991 18:4311
My cat Shamus seems to be most sensitive to these things, particularly
the rabies shot. It takes about 10-12 hours for him to react, and has
nothing to do with vet smells because he got his last rabies shot from
a home visit. He gets very lethargic and very aggressive if another
cat comes near him - I suspect it's because he doesn't feel well and is
on the defensive. By the way, there is a new leukemia vaccine that does
not cause the kinds of reactions that have been prevalent. Shamus
reacted to last year's leukemia vaccine, but had no reaction this year.

Some vets prefer not to give all 6 vaccines at one time. They
have seen some adverse reactions in some cats. (4-in-1 + Rabies + FLV
= 6) Perhaps Spike is just feeling under the weather - also if you
live around here the heat may be effecting him too.
