4787.0. "An Idea To Raise Money For Shelters" by LANDO::NOFTLE () Fri Jul 12 1991 12:24

This is just a thought for us to throw around. I know everyone is
looking for ways to raise money for their cause but maybe we can make
something like this work for our kitty shelters.

I read recently in the Boston Herald where a Christmas card program
earns millions for kids. "Since the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
started their program 17 years ago, they have sold 4 million cards
designed by youngsters treated at the center."

If we had a talented photographer, we certainly have the subjects for
Christmas cards, all-occasion cards and notepaper, calendars, etc.
We could probably sell a good amount just to the feliners here. I know I'd
be interested in buying cards or note paper or what-have-you that
featured some of the kitties I've been reading about here.

What are your thoughts on this?

4787.1YES ... I WOULD BUY!CANYON::WARKMEISTERFri Jul 12 1991 13:564
Well, I'm not a good photographer, but I think I would be interested
in purchasing some of the products we would come up with!

Coming up with handsome greeting cards, note cards, and stationery is
not a problem. Merchandising the goods is, however. You have to get
involved with a distributor in order to make the distribution of the
products worth your while -- simply relying on word-of-mouth sales
isn't enough to offset the high investment in these items.

Greenpeace and ASPCA have a catalog of animal related items that you'd
think they sell themselves, but they don't. A private company does the
manufacturing, marketing, order processing, and selling. A small
percentage of the profits go to the organizations. This is the only way
a scheme like this could work with minimal risk to the organization,
however, there simply aren't "millions" involved.

This is the reason the Humane Society of New England has stayed away
from these programs. However, from time to time we do have note cards
and greeting cards made up that we sell to Members and through area
merchants, but the profits are miniscule -- it's more of a community
    service than a money maker.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Heberts candy bars or M & M's are something you can sell which
appeals to everybody. I've always sold them for folks, but never
had anything to do with the organization, so I don't know if a special
permit is required (like with a raffle). Maybe someone else would
    know.

Sounds like a GREAT idea... I'll help in any way possible...

Selling candy bars sounds like a good idea.... I'm always buying candy
bars from other people, I'm sure others would be interested in buying
    them for a worthy case.

    Keep me informed...

    Thanks

I buy all my Christmas cards from the ASPCA now. And when I bought
them I sent in a matching gift form from Dec and they matched what
    I paid.

The Humane Society of New England in Nashua is considering doing
Christmas cards and posters of Bernie the Rescue Dog. It may be too
late for cards this year, but we'll be doing them next year. If we get
them done this year, I'll post a note here.

    Mike -
How about some kitty cards too. I would probably be more interested
in those than the dog ones, tho I DO have friends and family who like
    dogs better than cats.

Thanks, Nancy. If we do cards, we'll be doing all animals. The posters
of Bernie the Rescue Dog are due to popular demand! Bernie is our
mascot and is quite well known in the community. She does all the
school education programs and the school kids love her!

I had an urge for a chocolate candy bar a few weeks
ago, and stopped in at Hebert's on the way home.
The candy bar wrapper had a number to call regarding
fund raising w/Hebert's, so of course, I called.....
If we are serious in trying to raise money for our
"pet programs" (-;, this would be a good, inexpensive
way to start. There is a 50% return on money invested
per case of 120 chocolate bars. I have requested
more detailed info, as I am the treasurer/officer of
my horse club and can qualify to purchase from them
as an organization doing a fund raiser......

Contact me offline for more detailed info if interested
    in following this idea further....
