| The unseen stuff displayed out in the directory listing that you
see before you open a conference is implemented incorrectly
(Someone once referred to this as a "just kidding" list.) The
"right way" to read is as follows:
One time only, issue the command
set profile/auto=unseen
This will tell Notes that when you open a conference such as FELINE,
you want notes to automatically display the first note you haven't
yet read.
Then whenever you want to read FELINE, type "Open feline" (you probably
can abbreviate this to op fel). You have at least two ways to proceed
after feline opens up:
1. If it says "No more new notes" there's nothing new.
2. If it displays a note, you can read any subsequent replies to that
note by hitting carriage return. If you aren't interested in reading
any more replies, you can go on to the next unseen note by typing "next
unseen" or "n u"
Of course, you can stop reading at any time and type exit, and notes
will remember which notes you still haven't read; they'll show up they next
time you open feline again.
You can also read specific notes in the middle of next unseening by
specifying their numbers, etc, or you can write replies and all that
stuff, and "n u" will still properly know to get the next unseen stuff
when you ask it to.

| > An example....Why would a note located using NEXT UNSEEN (let's say at
> 4pm) be written before a note located using NEXT UNSEEN (let's say at
> 10am) the same day.....
if a note has been set hidden temporarily the sequence in which you
find UNSEEN notes would be affected....there are also some funny things
that seem to happen when we blithly note across time zones...I've seen
them, and never bothered to try and target them specifically because they
don't seem to stop the use of the product nor prevent me from seeing notes.
I've also seen situations where I have walked through the unseen new notes
and gracefully exited...only to find that the next time I go to the same
conference, i get the same unseen notes....shouldn't happen...and, as i
cannot make it consistently happen, i cannot file an SPR. I do know that
when we are in the western US or other parts of the world, and we are
accessing a conference in the NE USA, we can be "skipping" through other
interim systems - and IF THOSE INTERIM SYSTEMS ARE RUNNING A DIFFERENT
VERSION OF VMS THAN EITHER YOUR SYSTEM OR THE HOST SYSTEM FOR THE
NOTES CONFERENCE - we may see some slight "wiggles" in how things work...
at least, it seems that is the problem when i try and hunt it down.
If your problem is consistent, talk to your system manager...and maybe
you'll get to file an SPR.
