4756.1 | How about a CAT from a shelter? | FENNEL::RETZEL | Who do you think I think I am? | Thu Jun 27 1991 12:35 | 9 |
| I was at the Humane Society in Nashua and I noticed a cat there who's card read
that he/she had been given up because it was hunting rodents!
Imagine that? A cat that hunts? How dare he/she follow instincts! ;-)
Anyways, you might try there!
Just a thought,
Dawn

| At the Nashua shelter we typically discourage cat adoptions where the
animal will be used strictly as a mouser in a barn. Reasons being:
o potential for spread of contagious illnesses
o all 12 cats would have to be spayed/neutered to prevent further
reproduction
o all 12 cats would have to be up to date on rabies
o raccoons and skunks commonly carry distemper and the cats would
surely come into contact with these animals, not to mention the
diseases the mice/rats would be carrying
o cats could get into garbage
o cats could get hit by cars
o cats could get into toxic substances
o risk of becoming lunch for coyotes
I just spoke with our Director of Operations, Michele Clemons, who said
that if you could guarantee all 12 cats would be neutered and kept up
on all vaccines and prevented from roaming the countryside at will,
there is a chance you could adopt 12 cats to serve as mousers. If you
want to discuss this with Michele, call her at (603) 883-8512 Tuesday
thru Saturday.

4756.3 | Spayed/Neutered? | HDLITE::SCOTT | | Thu Jun 27 1991 14:07 | 6 |
| You might want to specify spayed/neutered. It would be mighty
expensive to pay for this surgery for a dozen cats! (and even more
expensive to support their offspring...)
I hope you don't feel this is an inappropriate note. Just a thought
from a friendly Feliner...

Thank you to all who showed concern about the kitties. I promise
the kitties are very well fed and taken care of.
If all promises go through, we are all set for kitties. Infact some
are getting a better home then they are currently in. (they are living
in the woods unsheltered or neglected homes.)
Thanks again.

Congratulations,
My brother semi-adopted a stray that came around, the cat - Tatty -
as that is what he always looked like - spent the afternoon sleeping
in the garden, and the evening in the barn going afer rats and mice, and
anything else he could find.
Tatty absolutely thrived on it. You will find that if the cats you get
are from a similar background, that they will have quite well developed
immune sysems, and will survive and thrive in barns.
Good luck with them all,
Heather
