| | Watch out for wood stoves too. I was changing my daughter's diaper
when I heard the most pathetic meow I've ever heard. It sounded like
it was coming from the woodstove so I looked at my 3 yr. old son Eric
and said "Eric open the woodstove door". He looks me straight in the
face and says Oh and let Bonnie out. I couldn't believe it! That poor
cat was absolutely filthy. She is a gorgeous brown patch tabby, well
she was grey for about a week. It was kinda funny, she looked just
like on the cartoons. All you could see was this big grey ball with
two bright eyes staring at you.

| | ......HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Sniffle....Snort!

When we first moved into our house in Hollis, Oscar, the chicken-cat
made a bee line for our fireplace flue and went right in.....There I
sat, hollering up the chimney for the cat to come down, and my new
neighbor dropped by to introduce herself - She stood outside the slider
next to the chimney, timidly waved and said..."Hi, I'm one of your
neighbors.....What on earth are you doing?"! ;-) I never saw her
again! Needless to say, when not in use, our flue is *closed*!!

| | Well, it's only been a week or so, but Hemi has luckily stayed out of the fire
place. She has, however, thrown herself at the chimney and climbed up a little
bit before gravity won out.

| | I don't have a flue (aren't these called dampers?) in my fireplace,
so I stuffed a foam sheet up there to block it after hearing a couple
of stories about cats climbing out to the roof. Helps to keep out
the winter drafts as well. Of course, I don't ever use the fireplace,
I have enough house maintenance things to worry about without hiring a
chimney sweep, creosote fires, etc. to add to the list....

| | When we lived in Ohio, our home had a fireplace and when we got a
new all back fuzzy kitten his favorite place was the fire place,
sitting in the ashes and having a wonderful time with all the mess.
We called him Mistie as he was like a cloud of soot for the first
few months we had him. I'll be he got bathed more times per day
than any other new kitten in the world. After reading this note I
wonder why he never tried to climb up the chimney? That would have
been something else to get into which was his main aim in life.

Unfortunately he is gone now, old age took it's toll and he had
to be put to sleep. He is remembered mostly with smirks and giggles,
and of course this antics above.

Yes, I sould of said "damper" I looke it up in good ol' websters

DAMPER: An ajustable plate in a flue for controlling the draft

FLUE: A pipe, tube throught wich air, gas or smoke can pass
    		through as in a chimney

Either way she was in the fireplace :-)

I use my fireplace all winter...and in the summer having the 'damper'
open helps let the hot air in the house rise outside...but Carmel
is more important so for the summer the 'damper' is closed..but
when winter comes I will have to buy a better front for the FP

I wonder if they sell "carmel proof FP doors" hahahhaha
