| There is one at the Nashua shelter in need of a home! I don't know if
it is actually a purebred Maine Coon (also called Coon cats!). Many
large, longhaired cats of unknown origin are mistakenly called Maine
Coons. If your friend isn't concerned about pedigrees and registration
papers consider checking out the one at the shelter if it's within your
area. Many shelters DO get in purebred cats that are every bit as
lovely and special as the ones bred by a professional breeder.

From what I've read and seen, the "Maine Coon Cat" is a very
affectionate cat that is long-haired, has a mane like a lion in some
cases, and will weigh on AVERAGE around 18 pounds.
Although there is a "legend" that this cat is a cross betwen domestic
cats and the racoon, this is simply a legend that comes from the fact
that many Maine Coon Cats have a ringed tail like a raccons. Cats and
recoons are not genetically similar, so the interbreeding of these two
species would be about as probable as man interbreeding with a
squirrel..(Hmm..come to think of it though, I know some real squirrely
humans...I wonder now??????). The Maine Coon Cats that I've seen and
been around were great pets..very laid back and affectionate...and
extremely friendly.

Yes, please check the shelter in Nashua (Ferry Road, behind
the 99) for a Maine Coon. There was one there last I knew.
Our Sasha is mostly Maine Coon and is very loveable and
beautiful. Ok, so maybe I'm biased but anyone here that's
seen her picture can attest to it. =) She has a big pouffy
tail and like John said, a 'mane' around her head.
An interesting tidbit.....while browsing through an antique
shop I came upon and animal that had been shot and stuffed.
There was a card underneath is that said Maine Coon Cat.
This critter was a large cat that looked similar to a bobcat
in coloring. Doesn't look anything like the Maine Coon's
I see nowadays!

| I'm heading over to the Nashua shelter today after work. I'll check it
out and let you know tomorrow.
I had a Maine Coon once, only instead of grey, he was orange.
Beautiful, big, friendly, energetic, playful. Beautiful full mane.

4751.5 | Colors vary greatly.. | DELNI::JMCDONOUGH | | Wed Jun 26 1991 10:38 | 10 |
| A few months back there was an article in "Cat Fancy" magazine on
the Maine Coon Cat.. They do come in almost any color and/or
combination known..from "tabby" through tortoise-shell to orange to
white. The color doesn't really make much difference as far as breed
points go...its the conformation, size and coat that count mostly.
They can and do get BIG though....

| The Maine Coon at the Nashua shelter isn't a Maine Coon. He's a good
size grey and white long hair, VERY huggy.

| There is a show in Mansfield Ma on Aug 10-11. That would be a
good place to see Maine Coons and to talk to some breeders.
There are also often kittens for sale at the shows.
