4748.0. "LOOKING FOR CAT TO ADOPT" by KAHALA::GOODWIN () Mon Jun 24 1991 12:03

I am looking for the right cat to adopt. This is what I am looking for:

    1-3 year old neutered male
    shorthair
outdoor/indoor (sleep in the attached-to-the-house barn)
    screened for feline leukemia

It's been three years since we've had a cat living with us, and I miss
them. I've waited this long because my daughter is allergic, but now
that she is in college, and I have a barn to shelter one in, I'm
looking. I've already been to the animal shelter in Goffstown, but they
"like to put their kitties into homes that keep them inside". Well,
some cats LIKE it outside, as long as they have a warm place to sleep
and plenty of food! And I need a mouser for the barn. And a guy that
can take care of himself, because there are other cats in the
    neighborhood (no dogs).

I've also called the shelter in Nashua, but the only outside male they
have now is a maine coon, which I would love, but my daughter will be
home from time to time and a long hair would be too much for her to
    handle.

I'm also willing to take a tom and have him fixed (not an easy task ...
they give you such looks afterwards!).

I live in Mont Vernon, N.H. and work in Nashua. DTN 264-9441. VAX mail
    KAHALA::GOODWIN.

If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it!

    Nancy Goodwin

That Maine Coon is *still* there??!

I haven't seen him but I've heard about him from some of
    	the other volunteers....I hear he's a beauty!

Good luck in your search. I'll keep me ears open if any
other older male cats come into the shelter.

Have you contacted Kitty Angels in Tyngsboro? I just talked with them
about a week ago and they have loads of kittens/cats for adoption.

I also sent a note to the base noter telling her to call Pat Brody
Shelter for Cats. As we are all aware....there are some barn
cats that have come from some of our feline friends in this file
and I'm sure they would be thrilled to be back outside catching
    mice!

    Re: .2, Judy

That's not the same Maine Coon. There were 2 that got adopted, Sox and
Buzz. The were "pets of the week" a couple of weeks ago. This must be
*ANOTHER* Maine Coon. Can you believe it!

4748.7Still looking!KAHALA::GOODWINWed Jun 26 1991 12:2810
I'm still looking for the right guy. I went over to the Nashua shelter
yesterday after work. I almost took Paws, a small grey tiger, but decided
he's smaller then what I'm looking for, and I couldn't tell whether he
would be happy as an indoor/outdoor because they had so little info on him.

Would have liked to take the long haired grey and white guy. His
people had given him to the shelter because he hunts too much!! But I
can't take a long haired. He is VERY huggy.

    ng,

Can you take a medium longhaired? There's a beautiful young adult boy
I've been feeding but can't keep and I'm willing to pay for the initial
vet fee of neutering, vaccines and felv test. He is definitely indoor
outdoor and a real lover boy.

4748.9Tempting, but no-can-doKAHALA::GOODWINWed Jun 26 1991 14:136
I responded to Roberta with a mail message. I'm afraid even a medium
longhair would be more then my daughter's allergies could take. The
description she gave me thru the mail was of a beautiful black cat.
    Tempting!

You sure you can't join us on our Field Trip to the
Pat Brody Shelter.....there are approximately 35-40
cats looking for good homes. If you can't make
this Saturday.....we can try again next weekend.

    Here now, don't tease me!!

I can't make it this weekend. However, if I don't find a cat by next
weekend, I'll probably take a trip out there next weekend.

4748.13I have several kittens for youFRAGLE::PELUSOPAINTS; color your corralThu Jun 27 1991 09:0922
    Nancy-

There are three adorable kittens (2 are male) at my barn. Nike, the
mom is in for a spay today. THey are grey tiger w/ some white. REally
    friendly too!

I'm not sure if you know what we've been doing, but we've had most
of the feral cats which have been living at my barn neutered, and
checked for Felv. So far, no one has tested positive (and I think
we've done over 10 cats...I sorta lost count).

They are in Westboro Ma right now. I'll be heading up to MKO on July
10th, if you were interested I would bring one (or 2) up, or maybe I
could get the guy who sits next to me to bring them to at least
    Lowell....where he lives.

Let me know if your interested. These kittens are not feral, they are
extreemely friendly and handeled by many folks every day.

    They are short haired, BTW....

Thank you for the offer, Michele, but I think I will stick to my guns
about not taking a kitten, mainly because I think kittens should be
taken in pairs to keep each other company, and I won't really have the
    time to devote to kittens.

4748.16The search is over!KAHALA::GOODWINWed Jul 03 1991 17:3124
Well, I found my cat! Friday on my way home from work I stopped at the
Nashua Animal Shelter. Smokey was taking advantage of his situation and
sleeping away. I read the card on him - 14 mos old, neutered,
affectionate, outdoor cat. I woke him up, and made the arrangements to
take him home. It was a very hot ride home, and I immediately put some
water out for him - he dipped his head in it! He looked around,
purring. Then we showed him the barn. It was instant adjustment! He was
home. And when we showed him the corn field, well! Talk about a happy
cat! By Sunday I took the board off the cat door to the barn so he
could come and go as he pleased, and left the door between the
screened-in porch and the barn open so he could sit with us on the
    porch.

He has been a well taken care of cat. His people gave him up because
they were moving. His shots are due in August. I brought him to the Vets
for his physical. Everything is good except he has a slight infection
in his gums. The vet gave me some antibiotics for it, and next week
I'll take him in for dental cleaning to take care of whatever is
    causing the infection.

I would like to thank everyone that helped me in my search for the
    right cat!
