4727.0. "CAUTION - POSSIBLE PLANT FOOD POISONING" by MAST::HOFFMAN (Joan, 223-5168) Mon Jun 17 1991 10:44

Two weeks ago, my mother-in-law lost Shadow (one of our cats'
daughters), and just yesterday, my sister-in-law lost Livingston (no
relation to ours, but also Siamese). While Shadow was 16 and
Livingston was 12, they were both very healthy. They developed acute
gastroenteritis and then went into total kidney failure.

According to Livie's vet, the problem may have been due to Peter's
Plant Food. Both Shadow & Livie like to drink the water in the plant
saucers. The vet conjectured that over time the Peter's built up in
their system and they were poisoned. Isn't it strange that the vet
named Peter's Plant Food and no others?

Any one heard of this happening?

Please watch your fur-faces to be sure they don't get into the plant
water - regardless of what plant food you use.

I hope this is not the start of an epidemic (losing cats) in my family!
Between the three households, we had 5 Siameses, and the healthiest
seem to be my two, who are the oldest! I think it's because Munch has
been diabetic for 5 years, and since it's a chronic condition, we watch
our two more or are more aware of what's happening with them.

4727.1that is something to think about!PARITY::DENISEAnd may the traffic be with youMon Jun 17 1991 17:439
Wow! I have a ton of plants in the house. Luckily I don't use
chemical plant foods, because my guys sometimes drink the overflow in
the saucers too. I would imagine any brand of chemical plant food
would cause such a problem. This is the first I've heard of it though.
I hope nobody else has this problem. Poor kitties!

How awful for the poor babes!

There is "special" plant pots available in most department stores.
They have enclosed sauces so little "people" can't get to the water
and plant food mixture. They have a special name but I can't think of
it now. I have been using them for a few months now and the plants are
fine. I am sorry for your losses. They now in kitty heaven being well
taken care of til their people get there.
