4698.0. "KITTENS WANTED Who have not been exposed to FEL V." by LANDO::NOFTLE () Wed Jun 05 1991 17:27

Does anyone know if there are shelters around that separate mother cats
with their kittens from cats who have tested positive (or who have not
been tested at all)? We are looking to adopt two kittens but would
like to guarantee as much as we can that they have not been exposed to
FEL V. We have lost two cats at different time periods with leukemia
and it's heartbreaking. I'm betting that one of you knowledgeable cat
    lovers will have the answer!

Most shelters will separate cats from known FeLV cats. Humane
societies do not allow mingling of cats. The shelters that have a more
home-like atmosphere usually have separate quarters for FeLV positive
cats so that they don't spread the disease.

You didn't mention where you were located. It would help people to
point you in the right direction if you could let us know where you
    are.

Where are you located? If you are in the Framingham, MA area, I know
that the Framingham Humane Society and the Frmaingham Town Kennels test
all their cats/kittens for FeLV. (The cats & kittens at the pound are
tested thru the generosity of the Fram. Humane Society).

The Greater Derry Humane Society, Inc. tests all of its cats/kittens.
We also make sure they have all of the required shots and are spayed or neutered
(if old enough) before adoption.
Call either the answering machine at 603-894-4385 or Barbara McCarthy,
president, at 603-432-5548.
I know we had a few litters of kittens that should be ready for
adoption now.

Carol
4698.4THANKS for your help!LANDO::NOFTLEThu Jun 06 1991 15:1012
This file is great! It's nice to know that there are so many helpful
people out there. Thanks to everyone for their help. To answer your
question, I am in the Maynard, Mass. area. In addition to the replies
here, I received some information off-line which I'll share with you in
case anyone is interested. I understand there is a shelter for cats in
Tyngsboro, Mass. called The Kitty Angels Shelter, where all new cats
are tested for leukemia before being admitted to the shelter. Their
telephone number is 508-649-4681. There is another one in Fitchburg
called the Pat Brody Shelter For Cats where they test and the Feluk
cats live separately. Their number is 508-582-4539.

To all "regular" feline noters, Good to know the PIPE LINE
is working out there in regards to the original noter.

I have been quite busy the last two days and meant to reply to
the original note with the two shealters she mentioned. Two
of our favorites. Keep thinging someone will do it.

Please let us know how you make out at either of the above
shelters and be sure to tell them you work at DEC. Joan Abbott
at Kitty Angles is one herself, and Priscilla is too.

A side note, Pat Brody's shelter is going to be the receiver of
the Silver Lining Memorial Award this quarter.

RE: 4698.5 	SOLVIT::IVES

As one of the "irregular" feline noters, I find your comments quite
snobbish. I believe that the original noter asked a question that could be
answered by anyone who knew of a place to get tested cats/kittens, not which
ones were preferred by the "regulars" who use the 'PIPE LINE'.
I believe any organization that truely tries to help find suitable
homes for animals and makes every effort to make sure they are comfortable
and loved until that time, is worth a mention in this notesfile. If that is
not true, then I guess I misjudged the meaning of this notesfile.

Carol

Carol - You misconceived my word completely. Let me try to make
    myself clearer.

A little back ground first -

Many of the noters in this notes file because of their positions
are able to be more active in writing than others. Also some of us
are able attend the get togethers that are held. The two shelters
mentioned happen to ones we have tried to help in different ways.

Direct donations of money by individuals, and as a group collected
blankets, food, cat litter, toys, and money. These two shelters
have had many of their animals adopted by one time noters as well as
by folks who are active on a day to day basis.

Now to address your comment - I was VERY HAPPY to know that word
of these two shelters is being circulated far and wide. What has
been done to help them financially and other wise is because we
all have the common bond of love for animals, cats in particular.
Some of the one time noters and ones who have been active have
adopted cats from "any organization" have found themselves with
very sick animals. Yes, they had been tested for the usual things
but troubles like ear mites, URI's, conjunctivitis, bowels problems,
and other assorted ills have cost them considerable. These two shelters
are known to have very healthy animals and have been honest about any
bad habits the animal might have.

I am sorry if I hurt anyones feeling by my comments, it certainly
    was not my intention.

4698.9KITTENS FOUND AND ADOPTED - THANKS!LANDO::NOFTLETue Jun 11 1991 13:529
We are now owned by two adorable kittens, seven weeks old. The female
is a little "tigger" with white paws and tummy, the male is grey with
white paws and tummy. We named them DOT and DASH! We went to The Pat
Brody Shelter in Fitchburg last Saturday and found the shelter clean
and the people who run it resourceful. All the cats and kittens were
well cared for (and nicely mannered). It was difficult deciding on
two. We would like to have taken them all. Thanks to all of you for
    your help.
