Sounds wonderful to me! I too recently rescued a turtle from
trying to cross a very busy road....

Those impatient honkers best hope they don't come back as some
poor little animal trying to cross the street & have someone
like them "now", NOT CARE OR BOTHER TO STOP..

Like the saying says, "What goes around, comes around"...

It's really nice to see that there are caring people in the world,
that will go out of there way for the small helpless animals..

Be careful with the turtles, though. It's mating season for
snappers, and they've been all over our back yard. One year
a neighbor tried to carry one across a road nearby and was
trying to be very careful by picking it up by the rear of the
shell. He found out just how long their necks are and had to
go to the emergency room to have a finger stitched up! I've
read that a good-sized one can take a finger right off.
	Yikes :^}

Ah, yes. I'm glad I know the difference between a snapper and a
    painted. :-)

I did help a small (young) snapper one night a couple of years back
though. It would have been hit by a car and I picked it up by the tail
(guess it's neck hadn't fully developed lengthwise yet) and took it to
ditch on side of road where it was heading for. "It" showed
    appreciation by hissing ;-)

| | Ah yes, wildlife, only this one was rescued from inside!

I was very sick last week and was up all hours of the
night. I got up again for the umpteenth time at sunrise,
and went into the kitchen. I walked over to the hallway,
looked down, and there were all four of the "kids", proudly
escorting Rusty's catch that he was bringing to "mom" to
show her what a good boy he was.

I put the 6 inch snake out the back door.........

One summer when I was up in Maine driving down a back road a very
large turtle was slowly making it way across the street. My sister
and I pulled over and went to take pictures. This was the biggest
turtle I have ever seen - twice the size of the dinner plate easily.
Well traffic started to back up and one of the drivers suggested
I move it to the side of the road so it wouldn't be hit by a car.
Not realizing it was a snapping turtle I picked it up keeping my
hands way back on the shell and away from the head and escorted it
to the side of the road. After we had our pictures developed we
realized it was a snapping turtle. I was lucky not to have a finger
    or two chopped off!

| | Thank god I have this notesfile...and hear all these wonderful
    animal rescue stories.

This morning while I was getting Coffee in our friendly Caf...I
heard a young girl BRAGGING that she shot two racoons last night.
Sheesh...I wanted to rip her eyes out...I did all I could so I
    wouldn't open my mouth!

What a way to start your day...atleast reading this note will
    balance my day (somewhat)!

Me either. I was really late for work yesterday morning
and traffic on Spitbrook road was heavy. Just before
turning into the drive to take me to ZKO I saw a squirrel
that had just been hit but wasn't dead yet. I had a car
right on my tail and there was no place for me to pull
over. I thought about it ALL DAY. When I left last night
he wasn't there so I just keep telling myself that someone
came by after me and moved him out of the road.

    	sigh.....

| | Good article in last weeks Chronical (Maynard area paper) about
the increasing success of wildlfe in the area due to decreasing
farming. Forest area used to be 25% available to wildlife vs the
present 75%. Moose to insects are all coming back to Ma. I won't
get into all the stories about wildlife in my backyard except to
say that every creature thinks my lot is a resort area thanks to
my better half providing a goumet selection for all visitors!
We are feuding with the next door farmer who traps and gases Racoons
during corn season, and another war is about to spring on a bird
watcher who shoots squirels out of her bird feeder (she proudly
    states her success rate!)
I'll save the story about our snapping turtle who thinks he's one
of the cats (come when called and begs for food) till next time.
