4688.0. "RED DWARF TV show" by CRUISE::NDC (Putiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313) Mon Jun 03 1991 09:12

I discovered a new show this weekend - You feliners in the UK
probably already know about it - and I just LOVE one of the
characters. Actually the whole show is pretty funny (I love
    British humor).

Its called RED DWARF and its a sci fi comedy. My favorite
character "Cat" is a humanoid who evolved from the ship's cat.

Basically the story goes that Lister brought a black cat, Frankenstein,
on board the mining ship, Red Dwarf, against regulations and was
given the choice of surrendering the cat for disection or going
into "stasis" for the remainder of the trip (18 months). Lister
chose Stasis. During the time however, his roommate messed up
on a repair of some plate and the entire crew was exposed to a
lethal dose of radiation. Lister survived because he was in
stasis and Frankenstein survived because she was in the hold.
The ship's computer "Holly" kept Lister in stasis until the level
of background radiation dropped to a safe level....

Thirty million years later Lister is released from stasis.

The characters are Holly, Lister, Cat and the holographic version
of Lister's roommate (who's name escapes me at the moment).

My favorite episode so far is when the ship ends up in an alternate
universe and the crew all meets their opposites - basically the
female versions of themselves - except for Cat. His opposite is "Dog".

There is a scene at the beginning of the show when they first enter
the other ship and Cat walks around with little aerosol cans spraying
things and saying "This is mine, and this is mine". I nearly fell
    off the couch laughing.

Its on channel 11 which is the NH public television station. They were
having a fund drive and ran a marathon of Red Dwarf episodes. Now I've
got to find out when the regular air time is.

I forgot to mention that Frankenstein was pregnant and Cat is
what remains of the race of cat-people who evolved from Frankenstein
("the Holy mother") and her children.

I should mention that its a VERY irreverant show and nothing is safe.

Lisa reminded me that Lister's roommate is Rimmer.

4688.3Maybe they'd sell this to the U.S.???DELNI::JMCDONOUGHMon Jun 03 1991 10:238
Hmmm...maybe you'd be so kind as to write the producer and suggest,
or better yet, coerce them into contacting the U.S. T.V. networks with
the idea of exporting this series????

It sure sounds a lot better than the mindless drivel that they air
    here most nights...

4688.4Clarifying...DELNI::JMCDONOUGHMon Jun 03 1991 10:276
To clarify the previous...NH Public T.V. is to most viewers about the
same as if it was the planet Jupiter... Public T.V. DOES run some neat
stuff, but to very small audiences overall... What I'm driving at is
maybe the NETWORKS would air this series...???

I wouldn't hold my breath for the US networks to air "Red Dwarf"...
it just isn't bland enough for them! As was stated before, it is far
too irreverent and might offend someone.

They made about 3 (or 4 I can't remember) series of this program. Here
in the UK a series runs about 6-8 weeks. The first one is very good,
the second series I found less good. Not as clever or subtle. But the
subsequent series were very good. It is the kind of program that UK
viewers either love or hate. I have to admit that Cat is my favourite
with Holly running a close second; he/she/it/them has a wicked sense of
    humour!

    LaDonna

P.S. Don't get the wrong impression; UK television is quite capable
of producing some spectacular *rubbish* as well....but mostly they
import that from the US ;-)
4688.6CRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Mon Jun 03 1991 11:0815
I agree with LaDonna. I can't see the US Networks airing this stuff.
It pokes more fun than "Married with Children" or "The Simpsons" and
you know how controversial those shows are.

You know that reference to Frankenstein as "The holy mother". Well
there's a whole cat religion that evolved and discusses the
immaculate conception ("No, it was a Tom on Jupiter") etc. One of
the humorous devices used in the show is to take something familiar
and put it in a different context. E.g. in the alternate universe
females are dominant but EXACTLY like males in this society and
males get pregnant (Which Lister does).

I think it would cause a tremendous uproar!
      (Which we could use :^)
      Nancy
4688.7...DELNI::JMCDONOUGHMon Jun 03 1991 12:426
Yeah, I guess it's improbable to expect in our "politically correct",
but narrow-minded and mindless society here in the U.S. today..

      Too bad...

Its really funny (odd) because we're used to thinking of the Brits
as being so much more "proper" and yet their comedy can be SOOO
    outrageous!

Just a comment something said earlier regarding the simpsons being
such a controversial show, and british humor. Simpsons started out
as a skit on the Tracy Ulman Show. That's about as british as you get.

No wonder simpsons is such a RIOT!

Red Dwarf has been on WGBH Boston public radio for a while. Nancy,
you must have seen the second try at the Red Dwarf marathon--the
first being cancelled by Desert Storm offensive.

I love Cat too. The actor really does a good job with the character.
One of Cat's lines "These are MY shiny things, (referring to foil
covered packets of cigarettes) You can't have my shiny
things." has become a catch phrase, in my family, that marks
ownership of something. In fact we don't call Nintendo Nintendo
    anymore, but Shiny Thing.

I look forward to another series in the Fall.
4688.11It's a shame ...BAHTAT::CARRDave Carr 845-2317Tue Jun 04 1991 08:3018
I saw the actor who plays Lister interviewed a short time ago on UK TV.
He said that an American TV company were looking at buying or adapting Red Dwarf
for the States.
Apparently they didn't like the idea of a humanoid mutated from a cat,
the didn't like the idea of an animated hologram, and they didn't like
Lister...... but apart from that they thought it was great! ^)

I've enjoyed the series very much. Cat is very obsessed with his appearance
and clothing. As .-1 says, it was originally a Radio Show (on BBC Radio 4
I think). In this regard it's followed the same path as the excellent
Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

It seems a shame that you don't seem to get our comedy shows "unaltered"
(Mind you, not many are of Red Dwarfs' standard).
We get Cheers, Roseanne, Golden Girls etc. There are obviously bits of these
I can't understand because of the US-specific references. That doesn't stop
me enjoying these programs.

	The Simpsons, Controversial ?????????

	you're kidding?

I haven't yet seen Red Dwarf. How does it compare, humo(u)rwise
with something like _Blackadder_ (my absolute favorite BritCom
	after Python)?

    Heather -
Some schools have gone as far as to ban the wearing of Bart
Simpson T-shirts. I know parents who absolutely HATE the show
and feel it teaches the children horrible attitudes.

Me - I just think its funny!!

I think the San Jose Calif PBS station, channel 54, runs Red Dwarf.
I'd have been watching if I'd known there was a _cat_ in it; why
don't they put these crucial items of info in the listings....
    54 runs lots of Brit shows and old time SF like the Outer Limits;
    long live Penelope Keith.

when?? I love British Sci Fi and the humor shows like, "Yes Minister",
or "No Job for a Lady" or....well, my list goes on and on...heck, I'm
a Dr. Who fan from years back....most British subjects I know think that
show is ridiculous, but I still love it....

Tom Baker forever!!!!!

Probably on their sci-fi night, which I think is Sunday. Give them
a call if you can't find it in the listings or Preview.

Red Dwarf was on channel 54 (San Jose) on Sunday nights, according
to a couple of weeks old TV Guide I fished out. 54 is currently in
June Festival (aka Send Money), and I don't see Red dwarf listed
for the rest of June in their monthly guide.

all this conversation made me drag out my tv guide, cuz i thought i
remembered hearing that red dwarf was being shown again here in atlanta.
time is 11:30pm friday, so i get to see it tomorrow night. if i'd
known there was a cat in it, i woulda made a better effort to see it
    before, too.
