4684.0. "WHAT HUMAN FOODS DOES YOUR CAT(S) EAT?" by CANYON::WARKMEISTER () Wed May 29 1991 18:12

What kinds of human foods does your cat(s) eat?

My cat, Heather, will eat just about anything. She gets plenty
of her own food (Iams dry & moist), but she always wants to taste
what we are eating. If you are within her reach, she will sit up
on her hind legs (like a dog begging), and she will swat her paw
up to your hand trying to grab a piece of food off of the silverware.
Of course she only does this when we eat in the living room.

Here is a list of some of the things she has eaten:

Salad - no dressing, she will eat almost anything in the salad
Celery top cuttings - sometimes will nibble on this
    Bananas
    Corn
    Nibbles at broccoli/green beans
    Likes butter
    Milk/cheese, of course
    Cookies/chips/crackers
Marshmallows - in winter, after we warm them in the fireplace - she
even ate one that had been dunked in my cocoa
Fibar - like a granola bar
    Hotdogs, Steak, Chicken, Hamburgers
    Ice Cream/ice cubes

Can you believe it? I know some of this stuff is common, but I think
some of the things she eats are unusual for a cat! Hope to hear from
    you!

My Siamese Sarah is usually very discerning (weighs only about 5.5 lb).
She usually only eats her dry Iams.

However, if there is chicken or turkey anywhere near the house she gets
REAL rude. Another favorite is pizza.

Satin likes popcorn and peanut butter. Sometimes she likes peanut
butter on her popcorn! Weird cat.

Had to get my pennies worth in here. Mushroom will eat everything, she
drinks beer out of your glass if you let her !! Her fav's include:

    Scones
    Rice (any kind)
    Chocolate
    Baked Beans
    French Fries
    Mushrooms (of course)
    PICKLES ??????
    raisins

In fact when I think about it she will scoff anything she can get her
paws on. Omlette unfortunately is on a strict diet of white meat only
    as instructed by the vet.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was my boyfriend sisters cats
(all nine of them) hooking sardines out of boiling water in a pot.
They are so greedy. One of her Kitties (Cane) actually tried hooking
fish off her own plate while she was eating...he's just so Fat !!!!

The only cat of mine that actually begs for people food is Taja. He
loves any type of meat, spaghetti, onions, rice, veggies, and tomato
sauce. Anything we are eating is usually fair game. Last weekend I
made popcorn and he stuck his head into the bowl and sampled some.
Usually, anything us humans are eating looks good, and he will sit up
on his hind legs and beg until you give him a taste.

Callie will eat ANYTHING she can get her paws on! The other day I was
making potatoe salad, and I dropped a small piece of raw potatoe on
the floor. Callie went running over to it, so I figured I'd let her
play w/ it & pick it up in a few minutes. Next thing I know, I hear,
"CHOMP crunch chew, snarf, snarf, snarf!" SHE ATE IT! I was very
surprised!! No matter WHAT you're feeding Callie,(people food or cat
food) she ALWAYS acts like she hasn't eaten in a week!

We had Tabitha's all time favorite people food for supper last night.
Chicken. She goes ape over chicken! She's a little cuddly love the
whole time it's cooking in the oven. She butters us up because she
knows we'll give her some if she's a good girl (even if she's NOT a
good girl actually!)! She's also a small 5 pounder, so we don't mind
giving her an extra helping or two when it comes to her favorite!!
She also likes hamburg, CHEDDAR cheese (talk about finicky!),and an
occasional tuna treat. Tabitha likes to try & make me squirm. If she
turns her nose up at the can of food I've opened, she'll see how long
it takes before she can talk mom into trying another can. If I do open
another one, she just does the same tthing, "hmmph! I've had better,
DAAAH-LING!" Oh, well! She'll eat when she's hungry, right?!

4684.6Gerber spinach and Martha Stewart's chicken liverICS::ANDERSON_MThu May 30 1991 10:4916
Otis like Gerber spinach, ham, chicken livers (Martha Stewart's
recipe...he doesn't like plain boiled liver), turkey, popcorn,
Grandaddy's corn chips, Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, meatloaf and
mashed potatoes, shrimp and scallops. I think he would (for lack of a
    better word) kill for shrimp!!!

He does not _eat_ these for meals - (sometimes I do treat him with the
chicken livers and the spinach) but have found him attempting to eat
the other stuff if left on a plate. Having had a cat (Benji) that
picked at tuna...Benji stopped eating cat food and would only eat the
tuna. He developed a severe vitamin E deficiancy and almost died. I
then vowed never to let Otis get the 'taste' of Geisha tuna.

Well Tykey really doesn't much care for food at all! But will
eat when necessary, she's just real finicky...
However, my newest addition, Domino, he's a different story and
i'll bet if I didn't come home at dinner time to feed him, he'd
probably eat Tykey, awha! i'm kidding..
He does though have a good healthy appetite, he LOVES people chicken,
when eating in the living room, his little paws are swinging like
crazy, you just can't get the chicken to him fast enough..
The other night my fiance had a slice of pizza & he's like I wonder
if Domino likes pizza and i'm like I don't think ~ chomp chomp
goes Domino on the pizza before I had a chance to finish my sentence..
~ silly boy ~ guess mom doesn't know everything, ha!

My two, Ralph and Alice, **love** AMERICAN CHEESE! It's the **only**
    cheese they'll eat.

They also love tuna *but* it has to be mixed with mayonnaise.

They try other things too and if they're in the mood they'll eat it, if
not they won't but American Cheese is definitely their favorite.

CAPERS. Benj goes nuts when I take the jar out of the refrigerator.
Also baked beans, but only home-made. And corn, but only fresh off the
cob - not canned or frozen.

Mocha's favorite food is definately, BUTTER. Sometimes we forget
and leave the butter plate out and we end up with butter that has
a sandpaper effect all over it. He loves cheese of any kind and
spaghetti or anything with tomato sauce and pepperoni.

Ming's favorite is, LOBSTER and steams which we have quite frequently
    and IAMS dry cat food.

Mr. Miyagi loves, cheese of all kinds, brocolli, and string beans,
and all kinds of cat food wet for dry, except, MAX cat dry, and Alpo
    canned.

**for anyone who lives near a Market Basket super market they
have **10** cans of ALPO cat food for $1.00**** saw it last night
so don't know how long the sale is on.****

Mocha and Ming have always begged at the table and we have obliged
them, and they are spoiled cats and I wouldn't have it any other way.

4684.11Scruffy has quite a Menu!!!BUFFER::WESTONThu May 30 1991 14:1231
Scruffy has a strange appetite. She'll eat various kinds of cat food,
as long as I don't buy the same ALL THE TIME. She'll eat some dry cat
food, but only mixed with moist. She's an indoor/outdoor kitty and
still mouses, even though she can eat great at home!

But she'll beg at the kitchen table while we are eating, and if she
hears paper being open, well then there MUST BE food it in!!! "Can I
smell it please?????????????? Oh! Is that all it is!!!!, huf!"

    So she'll get:

    Margerine
    Cold Cuts
    Fish -- raw or cooked
Ground Turkey -- raw or cooked
    Vanilla I.C.
    Angel Food Cake
    any Gravies
    Chicken
    Turkey
left-over skin off meats and their fats
she'll lick margerine off of soft bread and then eat the bread
milk left after we've eaten our cereal
    CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!!!
    frozen yogurt
    cool whip
tuna fish and or the juice from it

She doesn't eat alot at a time, she's pretty picky and finicky!!!!!!!!

4684.12 Get Out Of My Food!!SANFAN::FOSSATJUThu May 30 1991 14:3220
Pippin is rather picky but she goes absolutely wild for shrimp/prawns
and chicken - tuna when I'm making a salad or sandwich. She seems to
be perfectly happy with her canned and dry cat food.

Gino likes spicey food - hot sausages (??) spicey chicken and anything
that's been marinated. But, again, shrimp drives him crazy. Oh, he
loves chinese food and french bread.

Now stitch is a living garbage can. I think shrimp and asparagus are
on the top of the list - he would kill for asparagus - he loves corn,
garbonzo beans, pasta (cooked and raw, rice, peas, sprouts, chicken
spinach (cream spinich) artichoke, dried squid (comes in packages) fish
potato chips, cereal - let me put it this way, he'll stick his face in
anything you've got and most of the time he'll like it - lock yourself
in a room if your eating ice cream. I've often said that if I were to
hit my head an pass out and there was no one around to help - someone
just may find my bones when they came home and Stitch licking his
    chops!

4684.14I think she needs to go to semi-ferals annonymousWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityThu May 30 1991 15:4629
Happy sounds like Limoges. She will eat anything. She was getting
into our garbage can during the day while we were at work, so I sent
hubby out for a kitchen can with a lid on it. He came home with the
kind that has a swinging lid. Now, when Mogee jumps into it, she can't
get back out! So, we come home to a dirty, scummy, garbage can Birman
who has satiated herself on garbage all day!! :^D We are very careful
not to throw anything harmful into the garbage can inside. Those
things go straight to the cans outside. She usually just sticks her
head inside all the empty 22oz cat food cans and licks the insides.
Then she comes out with sticky ears. :^)

Hard to believe this apparent semi-feral cat was 2nd Best Seal Point
Birman and 4th Best Birman in CFA last year! You would think that I
    didn't feed her or something.

Mogee once tried to make off with our 25lb turkey that was thawing in a
sink full of water!! Grabbed it by the leg and was trying to lug it
out of the sink. She only weighs 8 lbs herself, so this was very
amusing. That is the kind of appetite she has.

Unfortunately, this appetite seems to be genetically dominant. She had
two kittens with Moody last year, Satin (of popcorn and peanut butter
fame) and Surrey. Both are just like she is about food; willing to try
anything, and if we don't oblige, they are willing to take matters into
their own paws to get what they want. Can't leave anything out, and
have to eat dinner accompanied by the squirt bottle. But, you got to
love them. They eat things even the dog won't touch! ;^)

Dried apricots for Poppy. I was eating them one night on the
sofa and heard, "crinkle, crinkle." There was Poppy with her
head in the bag. When I moved the bag she climbed onto my
lap and started licking my fingers.

Last week when I got out the apricots to use some in a recipe
(a new bag, since she stuck her head in the old one), she
cornered me in the kitchen, pawing and meowing.

Maybe it's because they're orange like her?

Linus' fave is deli turkey breast...I buy at least 1/2 pound a week
just for him to snack on...I've been getting low-salt for him lately
since he devours the stuff. He also loves any kind of fish or poultry,
and I always bring him home a "kitty bag" which he knows is for him
immediately. As soon as I walk in the door with one, he boots over to
his feeding dish waiting for me and purring away. He checks out all my
food when I eat and has to sniff everything to see if its worth waiting
around for. I feel bad for him because I don't cook like I use to and
am mostly doing diet food, so he doesn't get as many "goodies" as he'd
like...but, I'm afraid he'd be huge if I kept giving him all the snacks
he wanted. He also loves Smartfood popcorn because you can not only
eat it, but also play with it first!!

Gee, up to now I thought Misty was unusual because she loves "people"
food. Now I see she has lots of company. She's always there to check
out what we are eating. She reaches out a paw to me so gently, how
could I resist. I guess her favorite is ice cream, (frozen yogurt,
etc). She can be fast asleep and when my husband brings the i.c. up,
she's awake and immediately heads for his lap or the arm rest of his
chair. She sits like a vulture until he's finished and gives her the
bowl. The funny thing is, that's almost the only time she leaves me
to go to him, and as soon as she finishes licking the bowl, she leaves
him and comes back to me, to lick my bowl. Her face is full of specks
of i.c. ;-D The Birmans like ice cream and chicken and fish, but they
take forever to decide to eat something. They sniff it from every
possible angle first. Needless to say, if they aren't quick, they lose
out to Misty and Marnie. Misty shares my toast or bagel in the
morning. Actually, she just gets a teeny piece, but that's part of our
morning ritual. I don't give her much because she is far from a skinny
feline and basically a couch potato.

I guess that chicken and fish draw the biggest crowd at dinner time.
    Everyone wants some. ;-)

My Sneakers' absolute, all time favorite people food is... get this...

    			LIFE CEREAL!!

It's a ritual every morning. As soon as my husband pours the milk
in his cereal, Sneakers has both front paws in his lap, pleading
eyes boring into him. And the cereal square has to be SATURATED
in milk, otherwise, no thank you. Maybe Sneakers' should be on a
    LIFE commercial with Mikey??

Another story... I turned vegetarian a year ago for ethical reasons.
My husband absolutely refuses to give up meat, so, OK, I live with it.
Anyway, I've discovered something called TVP (textured vegetable
protein) which is a kind of meat substitute made of soy products.
It actually tastes like little beef chunks. Well, I made a stew out
of it, and I honestly couldn't tell the difference, so I decided to
try and sneak it on hubby. He ate the stew, none the wiser... but
the darn cats almost gave me away!! Usually, they're all over him
when he offers little bits of meat, but they WOULDN'T TOUCH IT!!!
Luckily, I was able to bluff my way through it, and he still doesn't
know he wasn't eating meat (since then, I've given all three of
my kitties a stern lecture to never give me away again!!)

4684.25SHRIMP ON THE BARBIMACROW::ROSSIMon Jun 03 1991 13:4617

    SHRIMP!

No other kind of fish, just SHRIMP! The way we found out was my
mother brought some over for lunch one day and Tubbs wouldn't leave
her alone while she was peeling it. He even went so crazy as to
jump on the counter top (which is against the rules in our house)
to get closer. Sooooo, I got sucked into giving him shrimp as a
week-end treat. So I buy it frozen at the grocery, microwave
about 5 at a time (leaving the rest frozen for another time), and
shell them for him to eat. He now RUNS into the kitchen everytime
we are with 5 feet from the freezer (knows what container I keep it
in) or start up the microwave, to his dismay it usually isn't shrimp
time. I know he'll never be satisfied with anything else than the
real thing, because he even turns his nose up at POUNCE TREATS!

My cats like a variety of different things but SHRIMP makes all three of
them crazy. We've had to lock them in another room when cleaning them
    - once they are released they start scouting out the house - Pippin
will sit in front of the frig and yell her head off - Stitch goes on
search and distroy missions and Gino takes to opening the cuppords and
sniffing out the higher hiding places.

As much as they love chicken and turkey, etc. its the SHRIMP that gets
them totally out of control. BTW, Richard goes to the fish market once
a week to buy the little darlings fresh prawns (usually Sunday).

I thought my kittens were strange when they were eating broccoli and popcorn.
But from reading some of these notes, I don't think so anymore.

My first kitten, precious, will eat crabmeat until she gets sick. I thought
cats were supposed to be smart about how much they eat. 8')

vanilla ice cream (tried mint choc-chip, he didn't like it)
milk (only skim, only a little bit)
iced tea (I thought I had him once, I knew the glass was too narrow
and deep for him to lick from, but when I wasn't looking,
he used his paw to scoop some out to his mouth!)

I'm sure there are others, but because he can be so demanding, I
try not to let him know what human food tastes like.

My Orange Tabby Henry will kill or die to get a hunk of good San
Fransisco Sourdough bread. No other type of bread interests him in the
least! He's also my closest friend when I bring take-home sushi into
the house, but he's very particular. He'll go nuts over a piece of
tuna, yellowtail, or any other kind of fish, but he won't TOUCH any
shellfish whatsoever. No shrimp, scallops, octopus, or whatever. A
    crazy cat, I must say...
