Hi, I'm a relatively new cat owner. I've been reading some of the notes about cat food in an effort to educate myself on the topic. I've noticed quite a few notes which expressed concern about about dry foods which use ethoxyquin as a preservative. Right now I'm feeding my flame point Max Cat from Nutro which contains ethoxyquin. I was wondering what sort of effect this preservative could have on my cat. I've read a lot of notes in this conference but I couldn't find any which explained this. Can anyone help shed some light on the subject? Thanks. -Rich

For a complete discussion on ethoxyquin, see note #2483. It is also discussed in note 4.9 and 890.23, according to keywords. Note 2483 is really in-depth, with over 100 replies. Happy reading!! --Roberta | |||||

One of the reasons that there isn't any mention of what effect the preservative could have on your cat is that no one seems to know. I have been feeding Iams, Science Diet, and Max Cat to my breeding cats for years and have seen no ill effects. All of these products contain ethoxyquin. My opinion is that cat foods need some type of preservative to keep the food fresh, and that if manufacturers can use less ethoxyquin to do the same job as a greater amount of another preservative, I will take the ethoxyquin. For more discussion on ethoxyquin, check the keywords in the Canine notesfile. There is quite a bit of discussion about it in that file too. Jo |
