4655.0. "He's Own Our Roof!!!!!!!!!!" by BUFFER::WESTON () Mon May 20 1991 10:20

    I need some suggestions...........or HELP!

    I have a young male kitty, on my roof!!!!!!!

    As my husband was leaving to work, he called me outside. There he is,
    Clowny, on the roof! I think he's been there all nite. I have a
    neighbor, down the street with 3 dogs. I have complained several times
    about them, being loose and chasing the kitties and eating their food.

    For those of you who don't know, I take care of feral kitties, some are
    pretty tame and feed them outside. Plus I have my own Scruffy, who is
    an indoor/outdoor cat.

    Well Steve went up on a ladder and of course Clowny ran to the other
    side. My husband had to get off to the hospital for a blood test and
    then to work, he said he'd go back up after work if he doesn't come
    down on his own. Well, I had time before work. so I got a chair and
    put it on own front landing. That's were our wooden railing is and I
    could see he ran up there. I stood on the chair with some food, and
    try to comfrot him into coming to me, but of course I knew he wasn't
    going to totaly trust me into catching him.

    I spoke to him softy and he's was crying, which breaks my heart, but
    there was nothing I could do. I feel bad cause, if he doesn't come
    down on his own, he'll be in the sun all day till we get home. I know
    if he trys he can jump onto the railing, or turn around and crawl down
    the house onto the railing. He stays right above there and I know he
    realizes that's where he ran up.

    I just wanted to post this, incase there is something we can do when we
    get home, if he isn't down.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed he is. I know it will be warm today,
    but I think he'll survive.......

4655.1Is there a window nearDEMON::MURPHYMon May 20 1991 10:3310
    Carol,

    Is there a window you can leave open where he might be able to get to?
    One of my brother's cats is always getting on his roof but only because
    she likes to come in through his bedroom window. She must have been a
    cat burglar in another life. :-)

    Good luck.

    My siamese climbs on our roof if I let her out on the balcony (so, I
    don't let her out on the balcony!), and she always gets down by
    herself, of course, not before I have several fits! ;-) The poor
    dear will probably get down the way he got up there, but I'm sure that
    is small consolation to you right now. If he's still up there this
    evening, try offering food again, and maybe water, he could get pretty
    thirsty up there in the sun today. Hope he's down by tonight. If he
    can get to a railing, he's likely to use it once he's calmer.

4655.3.1 and .2 ---- Thanks........BUFFER::WESTONMon May 20 1991 11:1420

    .1,

    that's a nice idea, but there is no window he can reach. We have a
    small Cape, one level, there is a vent with an automatic fan in it from
    our attic, but we can't just take that down.

    I'm hoping, as in .2 ---------he'll just realize the way he came up and
    get down -- I have a large teracotta dish I have out (use to be a bird
    bath) for the kitties with cold water in it every morning. I'm hoping
    the food, if the other guys haven't eaten it all and the water will get
    him down. If I have time at lunch I might run and see how he is.

    Thanks......

    All I can do is wait right now.

    Carol.....since it is only one floor up...hopefully he will
    come down by himself. About two months ago...the stray I feed
    was stuck on the roof of a three floor apartment building. Well
    after 1 1/2 days my husband and a neighbor had to go up to get
    him. Since the cat is petrified of humans...but he was also
    starving and scared, he finally came to him after hours of coaxing.
    They put him in a basket with a lid...and transported him down from
    the roof to the third floor porch. Boy...did he run when his feet
    touched the ground!! I don't think he'll go up there anymore!

    Keep us posted...

4655.5He's down, hopefully he's O.K.BUFFER::WESTONMon May 20 1991 14:0725

    Well..............good news already...............at least I hope.

    I met my hubby at lunch time, at an errand we had in Hudson. He told
    me he stopped at our home, in Berlin, to check on Clowny. He was not
    up on the roof! Hopefully he came down O.K. Like I said if he came
    down where he went up!, it was not a big jump. (And my husband says
    he's not "mushy" about cats!---huh!) HA!

    So since I still had time before back to this place, not a great
    assignment I have.........I went home and checked. I checked the roof
    myself, all the way around, I called and called him. The only one that
    came was my Scruffy. I know that when the sun is at it's strongest,
    they sleep somewhere in the shade and there aren't any trees in the
    yard, but we are edge with woods. So I hope to see him when I get
    home. I put out some more cold water and told Scruffy to check on him
    for me.

    Thank you for the ideas..............I couldn't help but panick, I
    guess as we all do, but I still will feel better when I get home and
    hopefully will see him sometime this evening.

    Glad to hear he got down. Stitch will go up a ladder, wonder if one
    would work with Clowny to go down?

    his sister.

4655.9A Happy Ending..........BUFFER::WESTONTue May 21 1991 09:3920

    Hi!

    Well when I got home I started to give Clowny a call.........

    He strod, very proudly, out from the bushes. I just stood there and
    looked at him. As him if he was O.K. and he just smiled.

    Like all of a sudden, he was BRAVE again! HA!!!!!!! I had to laugh!
    Scratched his belly and invited him in for something to eat. He laid
    on my kitchen rug (with the door open of course........) and waited for
    the grub. I fed him outside, with the other guys.

    So he made it and I told him that the other feliners gave him their
    concern and we thanked them!!!!!!!

    Another happy ending.........
