4639.0. "indelicate question" by TYGON::WILDE (why am I not yet a dragon?) Fri May 10 1991 19:17

!!!!WARNING!!! THIS QUESTION IS SLIGHTLY "INDELICATE"!!!!!!

Now, if it bothers you to read this, you were warned....

my problem is:

Hannah is a small, very "round" cat - although the vet says she is not
FAT, and she is active and playful, etc., she has one little problem...she
cannot keep her backend cleaned as well as she should (there, was that
delicate enough for the faint-hearted out there????)...anyway, I sleep with
this cat, so her backend not being as clean as I prefer is a problem. I want
to know what I can use to clean things up back there without causing
irritation, a rash, etc. I have to clean it much after the act, so it is
dried on...Any suggestions?

A damp facecloth? Reserved for this particular use :-)

Sounds like she's long hair(ed)? I have one that also gets a little
a-hemmmm - dried up back there some times and I keep old face cloths
for this purpose - and wipe her off with warm water and sort of brush
the tangles out - I also keep the fur on her back end trimmed and that
seems to help. At first she hated it (like everything else that new)
but now she's used to and seems to enjoy the "bidet" process.

    Dian,

How about trying using some lanolin ointment? You can find it in the
baby section at the drug store. (check with vet to be sure this is
safe, but I have used it without a problem). Anyway, one thing that I
have found is that it helps keep the area from getting raw, and it also
seems to stimulate the cat into wanting to clean themselves. For some
reason, they can't seem to tolerate the lanolin on them, but the stuff
that prompted the lanolin being there in the first place doesn't bother
    them! ;^)

I have a cat that has this problem. She isn't fat either, just isn't
into cleanliness. It isn't as though she can't reach.

    Dian,

Not knowing how old your cat is I can't say this would be a good idea
since it is something all my cats have been used to since babies, but
have you tried bathing her ?? Mushroom gets bathed once every six
months...beats flea powder....but also encourages her to clean her
properly when she licks herself dry. I can appreciate if she is an
older cat she may have a fit when you try and get her in, but Mushroom
actually sits and purrs when the water is nice and warm for her.

    Hope you find a solution

4639.5A little snip here and there...SOLVIT::IVESMon May 13 1991 16:2215
Ming being 9 this July has at times had a "dirty bum" (putting it
delicately.) I hold her in my one arm like a baby and back her up
to the sprayer in the kitchen sink and using warm water and dish
detergent I clean her off and dry her the best I can with paper
towel. She hates that mess hanging to her bum and under tail part.

Then I was the sink with clorox and HOT, HOT water and then scrub
    it down with Ajax.

We also keep the fur in that section of her body cut shorter. She
is so round and has so much fur that what we cut off really doesn't
spoil her looks. The "pantaloons" just aren't quite as full.

we bathe Hannah regularly and although she blusters, she doesn't really hate
it....but the "dirty bum" is a daily occurrance - so, I think I'll try the
lanolin (after Dr. Lee agrees) and see if it will encourage the tubby girl
to bend a little harder to get down there. I use a damp wash cloth, but I've
been fearing chafing or worse - delicate tissue and what not.
