4634.0. "Fighting Brothers " by ESCROW::MCCLURE () Thu May 09 1991 18:09

Last night, our cats Carl and Chester, had it out again. They are 8 years old
and have been together since birth. This is only the third time that this has
happened since we've had them (since 8 weeks old). It is very bizarre to us.
They are indoor cats. I really don't know what causes it although it may have
something to do with jealousy on Carl's part. They act as if they hate each
other. They SCREAM at each other and Chester sounds like he's possessed by the
devil! He emits this low growl that I have never heard from a cat before. They
even have different facial expressions. It sure is anxiety provoking!

Thanks for any and all input.

    Two likely possibilities: (1) some strange cat went by outside, and
    Chester and Carl displaced their territorial instincts onto each
    other. bizarre, but commonplace pussycat behavior. (2) something
    startled them (dropped glass, nighmare, whatever) and they freeaked
    out.

    I wouldn't worry about it -- I'm amazed it has only happened three
    times in 8 years.

4634.2lively discussion - in CATTYGON::WILDEwhy am I not yet a dragon?Thu May 09 1991 18:4915
to add my .02:

cats that aren't causing injury to one another should be allowed to work this
stuff out between themselves. There are times when the issues of "who is
top cat" simply come to the fore and there is the need for lively "discussion"
between the cats....in our view, due to our limited understanding of the
language of "CAT", this may seem like they are really fighting to hurt one
another. In general, this is simply not the case....they are discussing
their differences and coming to agreement on the major points of contention...
if it looks like fighting, and sounds like fighting, well, just remember that
we humans have invented "sports" like boxing and football....do these people
look like they are friendly?

I let mine get through these little haggles and they are always playing and
napping together a hour later..

    Never thought of comparing a cat spat with Football or Boxing! Makes
    perfect sense to me!!

    I know when we have a battle...it's so hard for me to stay our of it...
    because it sounds so nasty! But I did read that if you have a multi
    cat house...one cat has to be Top Cat and will continue to be very
    aggesive until the other cats back down. So no matter what you do...
    the figthing will continue until the "top cat" is crowned.
