4628.0. "TWO MORE, TWO MORE...To the Shelter!!!" by BUFFER::WESTON () Thu May 09 1991 10:03

    Yes, TWO MORE!!! To the Pat Brody Shelter........

    Last nite, early evening, my hubby and I caught two more of the Dudley
    Road Gang.

    Little Stripey --- almost a year old, female. Black & White Tuxedo
                       with a white stripe down her nose.

    Fuzz-head -- (she'll deserve a real pretty name!) Little Stripey's
                 sister. Long-haird calico, mostly grey with white and
                 beige coloring on her face, green eyes.

    We got Stripey in a box, with holes in it, and had to tie it up so she
    would get out. Coaxed Fuzz-head into the house after a while and
    chased her for a bit and my husband got her into another box near our
    cat carrier and she jumped right in the cat carrier, to get out of the
    box!  WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Called Priscilla at her home and said we were on the way.

    I was said for these two kitties, but very much relieved to save them
    from the elements and getting prego. They are very luvable, Stripey
    would rub her head all over my feet! Fuzz-head is very affectionite.
    So I believe they will make beautiful pets to some hopefully loveable
    parents.

    After we got these two settle in Priscilla's cat carriers, so they
    could go to the vets today, we went into Priscilla's new addition and
    saw all the moma's and baby kitties!!!!!!!!

    I saw our old girl, Bright Eyes. She remembered my voice. I patted
    her and held her babies. Sandy! You were right! It was so much fun
    being in that room with all those babies!!!! I feel bad that so many
    were born.......but I loved it too!!!!!!!

    Well I relieved. And happy for the catch............I do miss them
    though.

    We'll be trying to catch two more next week or so...........

4628.1way to go!MR4DEC::KTRAINQUEThu May 09 1991 11:019
    Keep it going! That's great news. I know you really miss the little
    furballs, but at least now you don't have to worry about them as much.

    Aren't all the babies fun? I hated seeing some many adding to the
    overpopulation problem. But somehow when you twenty kittens swarming
    all over you, it's hard not to love them.

    Carol:

    What great news - you are doing a wonderful job. I know you'll miss
    them - it's sort of bitter sweet - and then when you've got them all
    taken care of you'l have all this time on your hands and nothing to
    worry about and you'll be so bored!!!! hahaahahah!

    Gee Carol - Won't you get lonely ;^) Maybe you'll just
    have to keep one or two (After they're neutered, of course) to
    keep you and Scruffy company.

    Good news.
      Nancy
4628.4I do miss them...but.......BUFFER::WESTONMon May 13 1991 10:0315

    Yea Nancy, I do miss them already...........but ;*}, it is a relief for
    the old cat food bill is getting down. I belive we will try to keep
    Pieces......male, goldie. We have to catch him to get neutered and
    will bring him back as a buddy for Scruffy. Later this week or the
    beginning of next week, we are planning on trying to catch two, the
    sister and brother of the other two that just went in. Then Pieces
    will be the only one left, that's trainable.

    Then I'll have 3 males that I'll use the trap for.

    Yes, it's a bit quiter around, but that's fine too!!!!!!!!

4628.5Possibly Feline Lukemia.....for one.BUFFER::WESTONFri May 17 1991 09:2919

    I have a little sad news on one of these fur-balls, Fuzz-Head, the grey
    long-haired calico one has been tested positive for Feline Lukemia.
    Priscilla, from the shelter told me she'll be tested again and that
    will make it definite or not. I'm really hoping not. She's the most
    beautiful kitty. Would make a lovely pet. I wonder if the others at
    home might have it....

    I know there's files in regards to this disease, but I'm not good at
    doing the search. Could someone go over just a bit, on how it's
    caught. Does the yearly shots PREVENT this?

    I guess if she id definitely positive, she'll be in the area of the
    shelter for this disease.

    Can't help but feel bad.

    Carol

    Felv is contagious via cat bites, shared water bowls, shared food,
    shared litter areas, saliva, urine, etc. Fuzz-head could be positive
    but never get sick enough to succumb to the disease, but she could
    infect other cats.

    The shots are not 100% effective against the disease, but they do
    reduce the risk a bit.

    To do a search on Felv, you can do a "show key/full felv" or a "show
    key/full feline_leukemia". That should give you a list of notes that
    are keyed to feline leukemia.

4628.7Information appreciated, but I'm worried....BUFFER::WESTONTue May 21 1991 11:3214

    Thank you for this information, but now it has greatly concerned me
    about my own Scruffy and the rest of the gang. They do share eating
    bowls, I wash them as often as I can and the share a large bowl of
    water.

    It doesn't seem that there's anything I can do, till I catch them all.
    It's back to catching next week, this week I'm straight-out.

    Thank you, I just don't know what I can do.

    Carol

4628.8Get Scruffy tested and vaccinatedWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityTue May 21 1991 13:427
    Carol,

    It might be helpful to take Scruffy in and test him, then get him the
    shots. It can't hurt. The shots may give him an extra measure of
    protection, even if they aren't 100% protection against the disease.

    Jo
4628.9She does have to get them...BUFFER::WESTONWed May 22 1991 12:4119

    .8 yes..............that's what needs to be done. I've been guilty of
    not getting Scruffy since last fall to the vets. It's very hard on her
    and I know that is an excuse for me. Next week we are going to try and
    catch two more.

    I've had several personal issues hang over us and now we are seeing the
    light....

    So after the next two are caught, I plan on taking Scruffy in for her
    shots and she does not get pregnant, but she still gets amerous!! So I
    plan on having them check to see if she was ever spayed (was a stray)
    and if not, do what needs to be done, to take away the aroma that's
    calling all the guys now. And her buddy Pieces to be neutered.

    We're getting there............

    Carol

4628.10..Fuzz-Head/Patty very sick.....BUFFER::WESTONWed Jun 05 1991 13:0335

    HI...

    Got some sad news in regards to Fuzz-Head, now know as Patty, at the
    Pat Brody Animal Shelter.

    She has been diagnosed as having Limphoma (sp?) Cancer. She was just
    under the knife for a biopsy. The Limph-nodes around her neck had
    swelled and Priscilla had noticed that.

    It will be determined if it's treatable, and if so, she will have kemo.
    If not, she will be put down......

    Out of all the strays so far, she's the most beautiful one. Real
    loving, if she had had the chance, but with FLV possibly and this, she
    hasn't been able to be loose.

    The cost to the shelter is hard on them, but sometime this month I'm
    loosing my assignment here, and it's almost a year that I've been
    looking for a permanent job.

    I'm not one for asking and I do have a donator already, but if anyone
    could please help the shelter somemore I just want to mention what
    Priscilla and her helpers do. They do so much to give all these guys a
    chance to live. She has tons of even "new" kittens just recently
    rescued. Almost to a point, where there is no room, at the in. She
    knows that I will and continue to do, what I can.

    I'm very sad for Patty and if she can be saved that will be wonderful.
    But I would not want her to suffer one day. I lost my Dad recently
    through Cancer and I would not want the suffering I saw upon any human
    or animal.

    Carol,

    I am sorry to hear that Patty has Lymphoma. I lost my Moody to that
    back in November. But, his might have been different, since he was not
    Felv positive. I hope that the chemo can work for her.

    so PLEASE if you're going to send a donation do it soon. If
