4626.0. "Our New Edition......." by USWRSL::MCROBERTS_MI (Viva La Nordstrom) Wed May 08 1991 19:38

Well, a little kitty has just adopted my family. She came to our
house about 2 weeks ago. We noticed her eating our other cats food.
So of course I had to go and talk to her. My mother kept saying don't
encourage her. So guess who feeds her every morning? (mom) And
guess who named her? (mom) And guess who lets her roam through the
house? (mom again) She's so funny! (my mom that is) She named the
kitty "Silhoutte" We call her "Silly" for short. She is an all black
cat and has yellowish-golden colored eyes! She's beautiful! She came
at the perfect time! My dog Tommy had died the week before! I told my
parents that this is Tommy reincarnated! (ha ha ha)

Anyway, We noticed she eats like a horse. I have never seen a cat eat
like this before! I thought someone had starved her! In the first
week we had her we noticed a major weight gain which had lead us to
believe she is pregnant. Well, with some good advice from Jo, It just
confirmed what we thought! So we've decided to keep her and she is
going to the vet this weekend! We have no idea how far along she is.
So I think we will have the vet xray her so he can give us a pretty
    good idea!

I have been trying to find as much literature about birthing kittens as
I can. Does anyone know of some good books I could buy? Our family
hasn't really been through this before! We always have our animals
fixed so we don't have to go through this! If anyone can send some
advise my way I sure would appreciate it!

Oh, by the way, Jasmine (my other cat) and Silly get along great! I
think she really needed a playmate!! They play very well together!
Silly growls at her every now and then but I think she's just telling
Jazz that she is protecting her babies!

Michele, Jasmine, and now Silly!! %^)

    Hi Michele.

In December I was in the same prediciment as you...we took in Abby
the stray and found out she was pregnant. Well I gained knowledge
by reading this file, asking questions from a couple of wonderful
breeders in this file, and bought the book "The book of the Cat" which
as a very good section on births. It provides illustration, symptoms
to let you know something is wrong, and a list of items you should
have on hand just in case something was to go wrong.

When I first found out Abby was pregant I was in shock for weeks.
You see...I already had seven at home and the thought of bringing
more unwanted kittens into the world bothered me...but after gaining
all this knowledge and as the time got closer...I was very excited.
But little Abby lost her kittens before they were born....so that
    special day never happened.

    Good luck to you.....

    Sandy

4626.2What's the name of the Author?USWRSL::MCROBERTS_MIViva La NordstromThu May 09 1991 12:1018
    Sandy,

I'm sorry to hear about the kitties not making it!! %^(
I sure hope Silly's kitties make it! Did you have Abby fixed
after that? As soon as I can, I will be having Silly fixed!!!
She will definately NOT be going outside until after that!!!
We sure don't need anymore kitties!!!

Do you know the name of the author for "The Book of The Cat?"
    Where did you get it?

Good news, So far I have 2 homes picked out for the kittens!!
A friend of mine who lives right across the street! YEA! That
way I can keep an eye on it! The other, is the Priest from our
church! He just had his older cat put to sleep because of Feline
Leukemia! He has a 1 1/2 year old kitty now but wants another!

    Michelle,

If the bookstore didn't have that book I told you about, order it. It
is paperback and only costs about $5.00.

Also, the Cornell Book of Cats is a good one. That one is hard cover
    and runs about $25.00.

Did you do the keyword search like I suggested?? Just checking up on
    you. :^)

The Cornell Book of Cats is great. Jo, I even like it better than
Feline Husbandry, which has been sort of cumbersome to read, but
certain parts of it are very interesting and informative. I think the
Cornell book covers a wider range of health problems and illnesses,
whereas the Feline Husbandry book concentrates more on diseases
plaguing the multi-cat environment (evidentally since that is what the
    subtitle of the book states!!).

Michele...part of me was sad that Abby lost the babies...but the other
part of me was happy. I know I would have had a real hard time parting
with any kitten....and with seven already in the house....I'm pretty
maxed out. Yes she was fixed right after she came out of heat.

Because Abby was a stray...I think her problem was lack of nourishment
in the first four weeks of her pregnancy. She was also infested with
Roundworms. I don't think the babies had a chance from the beginning.

I bought the "book of the Cat" from Walden Book Store in Leominster...
it's about $16.95. I'm not sure who the author is....but it has a white
cover with a red/orange cat on the front.

Good luck with Silly....and please keep us posted.

Has he had a chat with his vet about the current kitty being possibly
infected and passing it on to the new kitten? I just raise this as
something to be looked into, I've forgotten the state of how good
the state of leukemia testing is, and maybe the current kity is
    vaccinated.

    Jo,

I called a couple of different bookstores and they didn't carry that
book you told me about. How can I order it? How long does it take
    to get the book?

I did do the keyword search but that was really no help at all. I
found that most of the peole didn't get into the actual birth and what
    would happen.

    Re: #6

I'm not sure if the kitty has been vaccinated yet. I will definately
find out! Thanks for pointing that out to me! If I know Father Fry he
loves animals and children and would do anything he could to help
them. I'm sure the kitty is vaccinated but I will double check!!!

I'm going to call some more bookstores on these other books.

    Thanks!!

Call the bookstore and tell them that you want to order the book. Give
them the name of the author and the title, they do the rest. Only
takes a week or so usually, unless the book is out of print. I am
pretty sure that that book is not out of print.

Don't give up on the keywords. I remember entering lots of info about
pregnancy and birth in this file over the last 5 or so years. :^)
When I get time I will help find them for you and send you some
    pointers to the right notes.

There is a company that mail orders any book in print. It's reachable
at 1-800-ALL-BOOK. I've dealt with them for several years. Be sure
to tell them that you want the book even if they have to order it
from the publisher (as opposed to their having it in their stock), or
you'll get a "should we charge you $2 more to order it from the
    publisher?" postcard.

As a last resort I could loan you my copy of "The Cornell book of cats"
I hesitate only because I find it to be such an excellent source of
info I hate to part with it.

You are so good to take in this kitty. Please please contact me
if I can be of assistance.

4626.12I found the BOOK!!!!USWRSL::MCROBERTS_MIViva La NordstromThu May 09 1991 18:5133
Gosh, you guys are great!!! Thanks anyway, but I did get
a hold of Crown books and they have the book for $22.00.
I think after work tonight I will be going over there to
    pick up the book!

Guess what, I talked to my aunt today and she wants a kitten too!!!
YEA!!!! This is great, they aren't even born and I've given them all
away!! I think once they are born it will be hard to let them go!!

Oh! I ment to tell you guys! Starting Monday evening we have kept
Silly in the house.(just at night) I put her in my room with me and
Jasmine. Of course I shut my door. We have a bird and she's really
interested in it!! Anyway, early Tueday and Wednesday morning she
would wake me up scratching the carpet. I figured she wanted out. So
of course I would roll myself out of bed and let the little turd out!!
Well, this am she never wanted out! My mother had to pick her up and
put her outside to get her out! We wouldn't normally make the cat go
out but we don't know what she'll do in the house. Especially with the
    bird.

Last night when I went to bed she came and jumped up on my bed. She
finally inched her way underneath the covers right up against my side.
It was really cute!! I was laying there really still when I felt this
kick in my side!!! It was incredible!! The babies(or baby) kicked
me!! I of course about cried!! You see, I've never had an animal that
has ever had babies! So this is a new thing for me!! And very
    exciting if I might add!!!!

    Thanks Again!!

    Hey Michelle,

Your dad keeps trying to talk us all into taking a kitten. As
if 3 of my own and the 7 strays I'm feeding aren't enough.
You're doing great in the homes department.

If you run out of kittens for all the homes you're finding let
me know. My apartment manager has taken in a stray with 3 kittens
and we'll be needing to find homes for 2 kittens and momma (my
manager is keeping a kitten). I think they're about 4 weeks old
now. Panda (that's what I've been calling momma 'cause she's
black and white) had them about the time that I got off disability
and went back to work (April 15th timeframe). Geez, now if I can
just get the other stray cats to trust me enough to get near them
I can get them all fixed before its too late.

Oh, your dad says you've been around kitten births before, you were
just too young to remember. So, maybe it will be like riding a
bike (they say you never forget that). You'll be a natural.

Is it possible to close the door in the room the bird is in
and let Silly stay in if she wants. I only ask....because with
seven cats and a bird...this is what we have to do when we are
    not at home.

    Michelle,

If Silly keeps going outside, you run the risk of her having her babes
outside where you can't find them. She will do all her nesting outside
and you won't know how close she is to delivery. You might even miss
the whole thing! :^) Then we won't know how your birthing skills
    worked out. :^)

    Sandy,

Our bird stays in the family room. That way she can be around
the whole fmily. I'm afraid of locking her in my bedroom or our
computer room (the cat that is). I think she might start digging
    at the carpet.

One more dy till she goes to the vet!!! I'll keep you posted.

    Jan,

My dad never mentioned anything to me about being around a kitty birth
before!! I'll have to talk to him about that!! Yesterday he told
me that you had mentioned something about us having a prego cat. He
couldn't figure out how you found out. So I told him I've been writing
    in the notes file!

4626.17Update On SillyUSWRSL::MCROBERTS_MIViva La NordstromSun May 12 1991 17:4925
Well, we took Silly to the vet on Saturday. She tested negative for
felin leukemia, she has no ear mites, she however, did get some shots. I'm
not sure which ones since I wasn't the one who took her. The doctor
said she was very healthy! He thought she was under a year old! That
is what I had figured anyway! I figured this was her first litter.

The vet also said she looked as if she could deliver in the next 2 to
3 weeks. They didn't feel it necessary to do an x-ray. So now I guess
we just wait. My dad made the box for her this weekend. It's all set
up for her. I think we are ready!!

Well, I went to the book store this weekend. I went crazy!! I found
the Cornell book of cats so I bought that. I also bought "The Ultimate
Cat Book" Now this is a good book!!! The third book I bought was "The
Common Sense Book of Kitten and Cat Care", and the fourth book I got
was "The New Cat Handbook" Two of these books have colored pictures of
actual births. Very interesting!! I read almost all of The Ultimate
Cat Book!! Now this book has alot of information that is going to come
    in handy!

Well, if anything new happens I'll keep you posted!!

    Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to update you on Silly, She's getting huge!!
I sure hope there aren't more than 4 kitties in there!! Any
way, I think she's going to burst very soon! She will be indoors
starting tonight! I don't want to take any chances of her having
the kitties outside! She seems very uncomfortable when you get near
her tummy. Last night I was trying to pet her and when I got near
her tummy she got up and ran. Is this normal for prego cats??

I was kinda concerned!!! Well, now I wait! This is worse than
being in a waiting room waiting for a baby!! ha ha ha !!!!

    Hi...

The waiting is the hardest part... my husband and I bought a house a
few years ago, and along with the house, came this wonderful cat.. we
had 2 at the time, and just sort of absorbed the stray into our
household.. I brought the new cat to the vet.. the vet told me she was
spayed.. she had this little scar.. and it was in the right place..

Unfortunately, she wasn't spayed, and she became preganant... she was
pregnant in the colder months.. her favorite spot was stretched out in
front of the woodstove.. warming her belly.. I would sit and watch her
for hours.. you could see the kittens moving around in there.. it was
    the most wonderful thing...

We knew her time was near when she started digging in my sock drawer..
my husband brought a box in, and we put a blanket in it.. he put the
box in the bottom of our closet... he picked up LJ (short for Lady
Jane), put her in the box, and said "This is where you'll have your
    kittens, ok??"...

When he got home that night... there she was in the box with 4
kittens.... We found homes for all the kittens... The really fun
part is watching the kittens grow up...

Give Silly a little hug from us!!!
