4600.0. "Flea Collar panic" by USCTR1::BNORRIS () Wed May 01 1991 11:54

A friend of mine told me that through this notes file she learned that
instead of using a flea collar to kill fleas, you can give your cat
brewer's yeast and powdered garlic capsules in his food and this should
    do the trick.

We have been doing that with our 7 mo old kitty for one week now. We
were concerned that it probably would take some time for this to
actually start taking effect though, so we bought a flea collar
    temporarily.

The problem is that he is able to squeeze his mouth around the collar
so that his jaw gets stuck with his mouth wide open. He gets very
    scared and we do too.

We don't want him or us to get fleas, but hate putting him through this
misery. Perhaps we don't adjust it tight enough. Although, from my
dog experience, I am able to only comfortably fit one finger inside the
    collar while on him.

What do I do? How long does the b.yeast/garlic take? Can I be certain
    that it will work?

    Thank you..... Barbara

I find that the brewer's yeast and garlic works fairly well, but it
takes up to a month for it to become effective. I do NOT use a collar,
because of various reasons...not the least of which is that the cat can
catch the collar somewhere and strangle...and the stuff in flea collars
MAY be harmful to the cat as well as the fleas. We DO powder our
animals...we use "Zodiac" powder for both our cats and dogs... With the
brewers/garlic, we've been able to get away with about 2 powderings per
    summer...

I had the same problem the last time I put Sebastian one
of those smelly collar, I woke up one night hearing that
chocking sound there was Sebastian on the bed I was
horrified seeing him stock like that, it was so tight that
I had to cut the collar off with scissors. So for now on i'm
only using powder when he gets fleas.

Collars seem worthless anyway...John, when you say brewers yeast/garlic
and two powders...Do your cats go outside, and does this eliminate the
problem entirely??? I still haven't totally alleviated last year's
investation, and I'm concerned about the well-being of my animals...

I'm also concerned about all the spraying I've done (w/simultaneous
    bathing/dips/spraying).
4600.4NO MORE FOR MEUSCTR1::BNORRISWed May 01 1991 16:274
Thanks. I think I'll try some of that powder before the season really
begins along with the other stuff. NO MORE COLLARS FOR ME OR CISCO!!!

Last year's crop were really buggers!! I have one cat that we have to
do already...but we haven't seen any on the others. Luke was a stray,
and I think he may only have one or two fleas, but he's having a
reaction to them, and he's losing his hair on his back from it...

I don't know if there is any COMPLETE cure..short of burning down the
house and using a flamethrower on the yard....all you can do is keep
'em down to a manageable level. Our cats don'e fgo out except in the
back yard, which is fenced in, but that's enuff..because a couple of
the dogs do, and fleas aren't real discriminating...dog or cat means
    the same to them.

We've actually experienced more damage on our dogs from collars than
help...we had a beagle that got a very bad irritation on her neck from
    the chemicals/insecticides in the collar..

Be sure that you use only flea products that say they are for CATS.
DO NOT USE DOG FLEA PRODUCTS ON CATS. It can be lethal.

You might also look into flea sprays that contain "growth inhibitors".
These are hormones that interfear with the flea's growth cycle making
it next to impossible for them to breed.

Impossible as it may seem, my three cats were infested with fleas
last fall and they're all INDOOR cats and we live on the THIRD floor!
My poor Sneakers is allergic to flea bites, and had all kinds of
scrabs on his skin. Plus he was scratching so much, he lost a lot
of hair (which is finally growing back).

We had to dip all three and bomb the house... and even then, 4-5
weeks later I saw more fleas running around on the cats!! The good
news is they finally all cleared out (found one flea floating in the
water bowl... maybe he committed suicide??).

That really got me - I never heard of fleas being able to jump up
three floors! We figured they must have come in one either my
husband or I. So, even tho your cats are indoor-only, they're still
    not safe!

EXCEPT in the case of "Zodiac" powder.....the ingredients AND
porportions of the Zodiac flea powder for dogs and cats is absolutely
    identical...

Most all other preparations are NOT this way though...and it would
not be smart to mix 'em up...may have some really nasty side effects..

I have three indoor cats who got infested last year and I couldn't quite
figure it out UNTIL ------> I remembered going for a long ride with a
friend who has a dog (dog was not with us but his blanket was) - I had
tossed my jacket and stuff in the back seat and I'm sure that I took
the suckers home with me - Sunny, the dog, had a serious flea problem
and I remember that the cats started scratching shortlt after that. I
live three flights up as well.

Zodiac powder and premise spray with nightly flea combing did the trick
    - as well as increased vacuming and washing of their bedding/blankets.

4600.11BAD news..DELNI::JMCDONOUGHFri May 03 1991 10:046
AMEN!! A dog/cat/skunk/possum/bunny/racoon can simply walk through
your yard close to your house and a couple can hop off....and you've
got 'em... Not much you can really do to totally prevent them...just
    try to control them...

I have the flea collars with the elastic on the collar so the cat can
easily get it off rather than get stuck. But......I have the yeast and
garlic stuff and am thinking about taking the collars off and just
    using that.

Question...do you really use two teaspoons of this power? That
    seems like a lot.

I hope those little buggers (fleas) aren't to plentiful this year.
Last year we had a real bad season. My cats don't even go out and they
got fleas. I'm almost certain that they got them at the Vet's though.
I took one of them for an appointment and the next day she was
    scratching and I found FLEAS.

One suggestion about indoor fleas -- FLEABUSTERS. I'm not sure if this
company operates outside of California but their solution is great.
They guarantee your house will be free of fleas for one year. Cost
for 1500 sq feet house is about $180 --expensive but worth it!

They use a powder combination of rotenone and borax. They put on the
carpet and furniture and rub it in with a reverse vacuum cleaner. It
makes a mess and the kitties and you need to go elsewhere while they
dust. (Cover monitors, stereos, TVs,etc.) Leave the dust untouched
for 24 hours then begin vacuuming and vaccuming as much as you like.
There will be still be some fleas for 5-6 weeks and then NONE! The
rotenone is a low toxic pestiside which kills fleas immediately. The
borax is only toxic to the fleas and stays in the carpet and dehydrates
the feas as they hatch -- breaking the egg hatching cycle is the key to
    getting rid of fleas.

I have 4 indoor cats but our house had outdoor kitties living in it
before us. We are now flea free.

I do the Borax treatment myself, sans rotenone. Fleabusters was too
expensive for me. Anyway, the borax works great. We have been doing
this method for two years now, since we got our dog, Annie. Fleas have
not been a problem. The exact technique that I used is described in
detail in this file. To find it, do a show key/full fleas and that
will give you a directory of the notes that cover fleas. Lots of great
    info in this file already.
