4598.0. "Nutmeg.. The Grass Eating Kitty!" by CSG203::CSULLIVAN () Wed May 01 1991 10:29

My cat, Nutmeg, has developed this new habit. When I let her outside
in the evenings, she sits and eats all the tall blades of grass she
can find. I wouldn't mind except that in her efforts to share things
with me, she comes back into house, and throws it up on the rug
    in front of me.

Someone told me that it is a lacking of certain vitamins in her diet
that causes her to do this.

Anyone have any suggestions for this situation?

Thanks for your help in advance..

    Christina and of course Nutmeg

Get her her own "kitty greens". You can grow her some right
in a plant pot. They are available in petstores.

Most all cats and dogs like to "graze"...and then barf....
there's some medical reason for this, but I can't remember what it is
    off-hand....

We grow oates and other grasses for ours and they run straight to it
first thing in the morning. I understood that it helps them get up
hair balls and pass the hair as well - it's supposed to be very good
for them - it's just cleaning up the barf first thing in the am that
    isn't too good for us.

especially disheartening is the dulcet tones of one of your kittens barfing..
only to look up from your warm cozy bed to see the little darling upchucking
in one of your best black flats that you LOVE to wear.....now history, of
course - I will try to recover some things, but kitty barf pretty much closes
the subject on my shoes, as far as I'm concerned.

moral of this story:

keep the oatgrass green and keep your closet doors closed.

It's natural for a cat to eat grass. In fact, it's the first thing
Kelsey does when we go for a walk. Finds a nice pile of greenery to
gnaw on. I've yet to see him barf though.... All my cats barf at one
time or another but I've yet to witness Kelsey doing it. And of course
one of their rules is to choose your favorite place to deposit the
    excess in!

One of the worst places the barf hit was the heater/furnace vent. I
came home and didn't notice it, turned up the heat and then this god
awful smell started to fill the house - could there be that much barf
around - then I noticed on of them staring at the vent - it was not
only on it but in it. Yuck!!!!!

I can top the "Best Barf Location".....One of mine
barfed while on top of the VCR...right where the
    vent is on top!!!

"Honey, I wonder why the VCR has stopped working?"

I can imagine what they thought at the manufacturers

My mom sed something to me about this being an acid neutralizer, or
maybe it builds up the acid, I don't remember....both my girls are in
only, i haven't had an out kitty for years, but my cat when I was a
kid ONLY ate grass when he was sick, then he'd barf, & be OK, so it's
    not bad I guess!

According to the vet at the MSPCA lecture on animal first aid, they
have NO idea why dogs and cats eat grass. I was SOOOO disillusioned!
I had figured that finally this great mystery would be solved for me.
      :^)

Mine eat grass too and more often than not do NOT vomit afterwards.
Of course when they do, and this is part of the contract, they pick
the most inconvenient spot for it.

This is grosss.... Vinnie left a jacket on the floor to let Alex
sleep on it and get his sent back...He put it on to go out last
night-gave me a hug goodbye and I thought wow-we need to wash
this jacket. The he reached in a pulled out a huge barf hairball-
Well he pulled that jacket off quick! He says: Look I leave him
a place to sleep and what does he do. I was busting uP!!!!!!!!!

my mom grew my kitties some of these kittie greens. They're indoor
only so naturally they devoured the only live plant they've seen
since the christmas tree. Of course, there was barf everywhere so
i promptly threw it out. I knew grass makes them sick but I
couldn't understand why you would purposely grow something and
give it to them that makes them sick?! (I had hoped this wouldn't
    be the case, but...)
4598.15Careful, what you send interoffice mailSOLVIT::IVESTue May 28 1991 17:4111
Be very careful what you send interoffice mail. We were notified
last week that ALL interoffice mail will be open and the contents
examined by the folks in Northboro. Too much personal mail and
other personal things are being sent interoffice and the corporation
wants to put a stop to it.

The corporation believes they have the right to do this as it becomes
Digital property once it's becomes interoffice mail. One more way
    to cut costs.

    (sort of a rhetorical question...)

The mailroom story appears to be just a rumor. We got mail from
our local mailroom saying that they had no intention of doing
	this.

the rumor is, however, effective enough to discourage us from abusing our
in-house mail privileges...and, very painlessly, helps reduce cost to the
corporation, no?

	Clever, these corporate fellows, eh?

re: greens - According to a recent first aid lecture I attended
at the MSPCA, they have NO idea why dogs and cats eat grass. I have
seen mine eat grass or kitty greens many many times. Sometimes
some of them will vomit afterwards, many times they don't. I
wouldn't worry about it except for the mess.
      Nancy
4598.20My cats love the greensDEMON::MURPHYThu May 30 1991 13:0019
The only times my dogs ate grass was when they didn't feel good.
They'd vomit afterwards and acted like they felt better.

My cats (indoor cats) just love kitty greens and sometimes I chop up
pieces of iceberg lettuce and add it to their food, which they also
like to consume. My cats, however, have never had to vomit afterwards.
It seems to help their digestion.

Question on Kitty Greens maybe someone can answer. Since my cats last
grazed on the kitty greens I put down for them, the greens have not
grown back. I keep the container locked in the bathroom on the
windowsill in hopes it will regrow the greens and have watered it. It
gets the morning sun and then shade rest of day. Is there something
I'm doing wrong here? Will they grow back or do I have to buy another
    one?

    Thanks

You have to plant another one. They don't seem to regrow. getting
seeds and your own bag of dirt is a lot cheaper that several bucks
for a new kitty green setup.
