4558.0. "EGYPTIAN MAU" by KAOFS::J_GREGOIRE () Wed Apr 17 1991 14:28

    	     Well here i am again i know that i have been asking alot of
             questions about some cat breed but tonight i'm going to see
             a baby Egyptian Mau and i looked in the keyword list and
             there is'nt nothing write about that breed in this note file.

             I know i could look at some cat books that i have at home but
             i prefered and enjoy better to read your comments, i read this
             note file everyday and i love it.

             So if there are any people in this file who own Egyptian Mau
             or people who have knowledge about them i would love to know
             what you have to say.

             This is a hard decision all these months i have inquired about
             all kind of breed and now i have norrow it down between.

                       EGYPTIAN MAU * VS ** ABYSSINIAN

4558.1Aby - Yes!BOOVX2::MANDILEI could never kill a skeet!Wed Apr 17 1991 17:159
    The woman I purchased my Korats from had an Egyptian Mau.
    He was HUGE! Shorthaired tiger colored with large eyes.
    Very shy, in fact, I only caught a fleeting glimpse of him
    before he ran & hid.

    Aby's would get my vote....they have the same purrsonality
    as my Korats, and are similar in looks and actions, too!

4558.2It's got to be an Aby ;-)XNOGOV::LISAGive quiche a chanceThu Apr 18 1991 06:387
    Another vote for an Aby! I've never seen an Egyptian Mau, but I have
    heard from a friend that they tend to be nervous.

    Anyway, you should get two so that they can keep each other company ;-)

    Lisa who's biased!

	My cat book says that the Mau and the Aby may be related. Both are
	very old breeds, and the Mau is the only natural spotted cat. The
	book also says that they tend to be a bit shy, but will become
	attached to one or two people. One thing you could never call an
	Aby is *shy*! :^}

    I know breeders of both types of cats who I would recommend. I
    dont know alot about the Egyptian Maos but I am in love with Aby's.
    Let me know if you need a reference for a breeder.

    	       Well my friend i went to see the kittens last night and they
               were very sweet there was 3 one silver female one male
               bronze and one smoke the little female was just gorgeous she
               look just like her mom who really look like a leopard and
               the eyes on those cats are so nice it's like a very light
               green that type of green that you can only see on wild
               animals.The one that i was attracted to was smokey he had
               big ear and he had a sweet expression that i really liked
               but the only thing is that his markings did not really show
               the woman told me that went he was born he all black but
               since then is getting lighter and his marking are showing
               more every week so he's promising becauce to be show quality
               he got to have those markings.

               Smokey is a nice kitten but i think i will wait until the
               Cat show in Ottawa to make up my mind on May the 12th if i
               had the money i would get the Aby and the Egyptian-Mau.
               my guest is that i will buy the Aby first and maybe next
               year i will buy the Egyptian-Mau.

               By the way did you know that the male Egyptian-Mau takes
               care of the babys with the mother!!,quit strange.

                    I have to make a correction when i told you about
                    what the Egyptian Mau look like and i told you that
                    remind me of a leopard well they look like a miniature
                    cheeta specially the silver color, the raison that i
                    make the mistake is that i did not know the english
                    word for the sheeta and thought it was leopard and
                    there is a big difference between the two.

    There is a person in Digital who gets into here every once in a while
    who's mother breeds both Abys and Egyptian Maus. I can tell you from
    seeing them that her cats are BEAUTIFUL! One of her Egyptian Maus was
    best cat nationally in CFF the year before last.

    If you'd like her name and phone number, let me know. She's in
    Framingham, MA.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        The Mau closely resembles the cats in the wall paintings of ancient
        Egypt;its ancestors could have been the cat loved and worshiped in
        those times.The modern Mau reportedly dates back to 1953 in Italy.
        There the princess Natalie Troubetskoy saw a Mau a smoke tabby
        male,for the first time.She fell in love with this unique cat,and
        persuaded the owner,the Egyptian ambassador to Italy,to help her
        obtain a kitten from Cairo.This was a silver female named Baba.
        The ambassador bred his cats with the hope of producing another Mau
        kitten ;the bronze tabby male was bred back to its mother producing
    	a female who was given the name Lisa. Exhibition of these cats took
        place in 1955,at the Rome cat show.English cat fanciers at that
        show wanted to be able to produce Egyptian Mauin Britain. They were
        to attempt this by using Abyssinians,Siamese and tabbies.These
        hybrids, however, did not resemble the original Maus. In 1956, the
        princess travelled to the U.S. with her 3 Maus shown for the first
        time in the U.S. the following year, Baba became the first champion
        Mau. The Maus in the U.S. are reportedly descendants from Baba, and
        not from the British hybrids. The Egyptian Maus, however, have a
        "scarab" shape on the forehead; Maus in the U.S. do not, but have a
        characteristic "M" mark on the forehead. A different report claim
        that the first pair of Maus, named Gepa and Ludol, came to the U.S. in
        1953. The Mau had to wait until 1968 for championship recognition in
        some organizations. The fist true Mau brought to Britain from Egypt
        arrived in 1978.
                                  TEMPERAMENT
        Egyptian Maus are active, colorfull cats, curious about everything,
        yet reserved. They love to lap sit or ride on their owner's
        shoulders.  They have been known to "cup" their paws like hands to
        drink water. They are quite friendly and affectionate to the people
        they like but will sometimes shy away from strangers. When the Mau
        is happy, he might wag his tail like a dog. The mother and the
        father cats will both take care of their kittens. Maus make
        delightful pets.
    Rem Goldman who is a CFF judge and Toby's brother (if I remember
