4533.0. "we are devastated" by PARITY::DENISE (And may the traffic be with you) Mon Apr 08 1991 16:06

It was while I was in the shower just before lunch. A voice in my
head "go check on Apache". I said to myself I would as soon as I got
dressed. He had gone out for a bit. Then there was a knock at the
door. I knew, I just knew what it was. My neighbor was banging
furiously, I answered the door knowing exactly what she was going to
say. I ran to the roadside, to the already lifeless body of my Apache.
We carried him out to my backyard. My neighbor said the car never
stopped. She saw it happen. I don't know what ever possessed Apache
to go in the front yard to the street. I've never had a cat do that
before, but he did. She said he may have been trying to come visit her cat
who had come out in the front yard with her to the garden.
Apache has been buried alongside my other lost loves in our field
overlooking the gardens. It was hard to come to work, but what other
choice is there..pining at home will not bring him back. Ten cats
and I and my husband are mourning now. My hubby came home to help me
dig the hole. I hate the sound of dirt covering a box.

I forgot to mention, in case some of you remember seeing him, Apache
was the enormous coon-type cat at the Haverhill cat show last Dec. at
Joan Abbott's Kitty Angels homeless kitty booth. I fell in love with
him instantly. He had already been through so very much, having been
found with serious problems from an upper respitory infection. They
hadn't thought he'd survive. But he had surprised them all, and
flourished into an incredibly handsome, huge, very fluffy lap cat.
My lap will be just a little bit colder now.

Yes, I remember Apache very well. You adopted him with Chirp
(now Brownie) who also stole my heart that day. I'm very sorry
that he is gone. He was a unique guy.

Apache's name has been added to the Silver Lining Memorial List.

I had this bad feeling about letting Rici out yesterday. Something
in my head said not to. He didn't come home last night. He has
stayed out overnight twice since I've had him, though. This may not
be unusual behavior. But I've called and called, and I'm nervous now.

I too am at work...and worried.

We're so sorry to learn of your loss,

re:12 Gosh, I hope Rici comes home. I feel the overbearing guilt
that if I had gone out to check the moment I had that awful feeling
that I should check on him, he would be alive today. I'm having
trouble dealing with that, but there is nothing I can do, I know that.
No amount of feeling guilty, sad or mad will bring him back.
My neighbor said something that helped though. When I told her what a
sad life he had led before Joan Abbott and her rescue squad had come
into his life and how he was near death back last fall, she said that
at least for the last 4 months, he has lived with love, joy, catnip
and happiness that he otherwise wouldn't have had. And that's true,
he probably would have died last fall. At least he did know love for
a while even if it was too short a time. I hope where ever kitties go
when they leave here is full of hugs, kisses and sunwarmed fields full
    of catnip mice.
we'll say a prayer for Rici, hopefully he'll be there
                      when you go home tonight......Denise

Rici came home last night. Thanks for all your warm thoughts and
prayers. Denise, your words are beautiful. Never feel Apache's
departure is any fault of yours; not only did you grant him more
quantity of time, you taught him the value of quality time...

    denise,

i agree totally with your friend: apache lived longer than he
otherwise would have because you took him in. and he had a better
quality life. that is what he is remembering now...
