4529.0. "abandonment - Animal Point of View " by WILLEE::MERRITT () Fri Apr 05 1991 09:50

The attached is a story about abandoning animals from an animals
point of few. This story was published in our local newspaper
by some wonderful animal lovers...it is about a dog...but as we
are all aware this situation could be very easily a feline. Beware
you will have tears...this one really gets to the heart!

    Reprinted without permission:

"Why did you abandon me? You had welcomed me into your home a
couple of years ago. You fed me, said I was cute, you taught
me how to sit and fetch. I gave unconditional love. What did
I do wrong? I went for that last ride with you to a strange
area and you just opened the door and kicked me out. I sat
and waited for you; I didn't move at all. I wanted to hear
your voice. I was hungry and thirsty. The ground was cold.
The wind blew all day and worse at night. When were my
         people coming to get me?

People came and talked to me, fed me, wanted to touch me,
called me many different names. I snapped and growled at them
to stay clear. They weren't my beloved people. They left me
a pillow, food, water, they understood I must stay and wait.
         I just couldn't leave.

That afternoon I was brought hot dogs and a warm blanket by
two people. They said they would be back later. I was cute
to them. I ate and waited---maybe today my people would come
to get me. the blanket was warm. I was getting tired, feeling
very bad. My body wouldn't stop shaking, my insides were hurting.
I was so loney and unhappy.

Five days have passed. All the wrong people have come by. Now
they are all back at once, talking, staring at me. They chased
me around the building so many times I am so tired. I don't
feel good. I can't stop my body from shaking. Can't they
understand------I must wait for my beloved master.

They came at me with three blankets. They cornered me against
the wall. I just gave up, I was so so so scared. A woman
picked me up. She held me, talked gently to me. She held me
close to her. She wasn't my beloved master, but her voice
was nice, her home is warm and I am being looked after.

I have a new name. They love me here!

Note from the authors: this dog was lucky, the vet gave it a
clean bill of health. The dog was only dehydrated---but
how many animals are so lucky?

    Thanks,

.2 Mike please check with the moderators of the feline notesfile
to see if you can republish it. I think that is against policy...

If they okay it...I will give you the authors name so you can
get their authority to republish in your newsletter.

This is not an issue that the moderators have any "control" over. It
was origonally entered from a public forum (a newspaper). The
moderators would have a problem if the shelter published this saying it
was reprinted from a DIGITAL notes conference where it had been
reprinted from a newspaper. It is the newspaper that must give
republication permission. However, I would appreciate it if you would
enter the name of the paper and the date it was published (In fact,
when things are reprinted, we like to see that info posted in the note
    as a minimum).
