| I would take her to the vet. I think this is probably what's called
"rodent ulcer" which has nothing to do with being bitten by a rat,
contrary to its name. There is medication to treat it; it is
sometimes difficult to treat, but if untreated it will
definitely get worse.

| It could also be 'feline acne' (too many french fries??? ;-)
Is it open and raw (maybe rodent ulcer) or
is it scabby (maybe acne)?
And can you be more specific about *where* it is located on
the cat?

| Is it on the chin or the lip? Rodent ulcer, from what I understand,
happens on the lip itself and inside the mouth, as well as on the legs.
One of my cats had it on his leg and the affected area appeared
red/inflalmed and weepy. Does it have this type of appearance? If
it's swollen it could be an abcess. Maybe the vet could take a look at
it.

| Thanks for the replies thus far. To elaborate: Meg has just the
one big sore on her chin...no other sores were found either inside her
mouth or anywhere else on her body...that's why I had initially
thought of it as a burn or scrape of some kind. The sore itself is
pink...not pale...in its coloration. I checked the other cats and
they appear to be fine...clear of all sores of any kind. That's
why it's so damned curious, and why I had assumed it wasn't anything
"serious" at first. Now, I think I will take it to the vet. Thanks

| Could be a scrape. One of mine jumped down from a considerable height
and scraped his chin and chipped a tooth while he was exploring our
basement. When they hit from a deep fall the face will take the
impact.

| Heh, heh, of course they land on their feet (but I swear one of mine
lands on his head) but as the vet explained it to me when we took the
clutz in to have his tooth and chin checked is that that when they land
they sort of crouch and the face goes down and forward and that might
explain these sorts of injuries from falls. My guy's tooth went
through the lip and got chipped when it came through.

| I'll be interested to read what the vet says as my mother's cat
has what sounds to be the same thing. She thought he had caught
himself while he was scratching himself with his paws, or maybe he has
found some piece of furniture with a rough corner and he rubs on
that (altho she has checked around her house for such culprits).
Hope you find what is causing it soon.

| I put a note in here someplace about a chin infection that both
Bumpy & Mao developed last year sometime. I think it was initially
diagnosed as feline acne but one of the odd symptoms of it was
hard white nodules about the diameter of the head of a pin that
formed in the infected area. The vet felt it might be a staph
infection. At any rate they were treated with lincocin (anti-
biotic) and cleaning the area with peroxide. Both eventually
cleared up completely, the hair grew back and the infection never
returned (yet...anyway).
