4519.0. "Rest In Peace, Floyd" by DEMON::MURPHY () Wed Apr 03 1991 13:36

My landlady lost one of her cats yesterday to feline aids.
"Floyd" was a large neutered male, white w/black spots, around 8 years
old and one of her favorites because he was a people-cat and loved to
be around them; a lovebug type. Floyd was bitten by a feline aids
infected cat and became very ill. Vet told her when he diagnosed the
disease that "it's something people with outdoor cats have to contend
with now", and that "just the bite of an infected cat transmits the
    disease to another".

Floyd stopped eating and drinking as of yesterday. She had him
anesthesized and he's now buried out back. I'll miss seeing Floyd
around the farm but maybe on some summer evening I'll catch a glimpse
of his "spirit" as he roams the pasture and field.

Thank you, Nancy, for adding Floyd's name to the SLM.

please share my deepest condolences with your landlady. After
having him for 8 years I'm sure she has some wonderful memories
    to cherish and keep forever.

    So sorry.

If your cat is given shots for feline aids, can they still get it from
a bite from an infected cat? Just curious.

Please share my condolences with your landlady also.

    Regards,
    Val

.1-.3 Thank you. I'll pass your sympathies on to her and know she'll
    appreciate them.

.3 - Unfortunately, there is no innoculation for Feline Aids developed
yet; only a test that can be performed on a kitten/cat to see if they
have it or are carrying it and if they do have it, veterinarians would
recommend the infected cat/kitten remain indoors (usually isolated from
other cats) so as not to spread it to others.

This test, along with Felv test, is important to have done on any cat/
kitten before it is brought into a home which already has cats in it.

Got all of this information from my vet.

re: .3 - Regarding the FLV innocultion. IF the shot takes it is
100% effective in preventing FLV. However, the vaccinations do NOT
take in 15% of the cats who are innoculated.

It is always confusing when we talk about FeLV (Feline Leukemia) and
FIV (Feline Immunodeficieny Virus or Feline Aids). The two acronyms are
    so similar.

Currently, there are vaccinations against FeLV. Nancy was referring to
those in .5. There are no vaccinations to protect a cat from FIV yet.
