4493.0. "PURINA'S PETS FOR PEOPLE" by POCUS::NORDELL () Thu Mar 28 1991 09:18

Mods, if this is in another note please feel free to delete.

Our local new station (New York) has a reporter who is a
'troubleshooter'. She received a letter from a senior citizen who was
previously homeless but now has an apartment and has dreamed all of her
life of having a place of her own so that she could have a cat. She
went to the shelter but the adoption fees were $45-50 and she is on a
fixed income and did not have the money. The reporter found a program
sponsored by Purina called (I think) PETS FOR PEOPLE. They will pay
the adoption fee for senior citizens who cannot afford to adopt a pet.

They showed the return visit to the shelter and how happy she was to
choose her "friend" (that's his new name). It certainly brought tears
to my eyes. I post this for anyone who does not know of the program.
I think you can contact any shelter or Purina headquarters in St.
    Louis, Mo.

Susan (whose friend Lin Bock is going on vacation and I get the
privilege of caring for Luch (better known as Luciano Pavarotti Bock a
very spoiled red long-hair senior citizen himself)

4493.1is there assistance with ongoing expenses?RHODES::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Thu Mar 28 1991 09:3017
This sounds like a great program.

But what about cat food, litter, and *vet* bills?
Is there some assistance with those expenses as well?

Those expenses can seem enormous to someone on a very low
fixed income. I'd hate to see the cats from this program
have improper nutrition, or miss their vet exams. (I am
*not* talking here about extraordinary expenses for high
tech vet care -- just the routine exams, occasional illness
    or injury, etc.)

Maybe we could write a group letter to Purina encouraging
them to help subsidize the care of the cats that they help
    place?

Pets For People has so many requests that they have a waiting list
that's so long, effectively our shelter may never get into the program.
We're looking to start something similar on our own.

requests for what? pets to adopt or shelters?

I think it is a great program, however I have the same concerns
as .1 What about routine care?
4493.4This is a nice gesture, but.....BOOVX1::MANDILEThu Mar 28 1991 11:526
This concerns me as I know what my foodbill is for catfood
a week. If on a fixed income, even $10 a week for food &
litter can be difficult.....not to mention routine vet care.

I know that the SPCA here in San Francisco collects all kinds of
coupons and gives them out to Seniors as well as drastacally reduced
rates for treatments and exams. I would be interested to know just
    exactly how that program works.

I did forget to mention that the Senior needs to prove that they can
add the cost of basic care (which I assume is food, litter, etc.) to
their weekly budget. I assume they open their books to the shelter for
examination. Regarding the vet bills, I'm not sure.

P.S. Just want to add a note to ask prayers for "Pete". My friend
here at DEC came in crying this morning. Pete, her cat of 15 years was
hit by a car yesterday and to make matter worse, she is almost positive
that her neighbors did it on purpose. They have disliked the cat for
quite some time. But I guess when you have an 'outdoor' guy it's hard
to keep them in. I am so glad my guy NEVER goes out.
    Thanks

That's so terrible. Please let her know we're praying for Pete,
and let us know how he does.

I guess I wasn't clear - Pete died. He was a brown tiger and Maryanne
had pictures of him all over her desk and bulletin board. I will NEVER
understand how people can be so deliberately cruel.

I live in the 'semi-country' and was going to a farm-market last week
when a group (maybe 5) geese decided to see what was on the other side
of the road. Of course, I stopped and found such delight in watching
them cross the road (and they take their sweet old time) but the car
behind me (who could see the geese) leaned on the horn the whole time.
I'm glad I was there first.

Thank you for adding Pete to the Silver Lining Memorial Fund.
