4492.0. "Why us?...." by SHIPS::FARROW_S (Percy, Who's Queen...) Wed Mar 27 1991 13:54

This morning we found poor Arthur lying by the back gate. He had
obviously been dead for a couple of hours. There were no signs of
external or internal damage, he did in fact look extremely peaceful.
He was up until this time a very healthy, very playful extremely loving
1 year old blue burmese. As you can imagine we were devastated and
with the thought that perhaps he had been poisoned, I arranged for the
Vet to have a look at him. They discovered severe bleeding in the
chest cavity but no indication at all as to what caused it, all the
internal organs were as they should be and no external signs at all.
They did say though that feline leukaemia can sometimes cause this kind
of internal bleeding but blood tests proved negative. He had not been
poisoned because this would cause the blood not to clot, which was not
    the case.

We were told by the vet that normally when this kind of bleeding
occurs, that the cat has either been involved in a car accident of
something extremely heavy as fallen on the cat and of course none of
    these are relevant to Arthur.

What is doubly sad for us is that we lost Ben, another Burmese, 3 years
old, 4 weeks ago. Ben was perfectly healthy until I noticed that he
was looking a little off-colour. I took him to the vet who said that
he could feel a slight obstruction in the bowel, but that it was most
likely through constipation which of course we could treat. He seemed
to get better for a few days, but then deteriorated quite rapidly.
After a exploratory operation, it was discovered that he had a serious
growth in the bowel and that the kindest thing would be to put him to
sleep. Welly another member of our family died last August through an
    Adder bite.

We are finding this really hard to accept, all of our cats are truly
loved and are full members of our family down to sharing the duvet at
night (quite a struggle sometimes with what was 5 cats and two dogs!).
To lose one cat is hard even through old age but two in such a short
time.... Floyd, Arthurs litter brother is missing him terribly, they
were always together, he is now wandering around the house trying to
find him and is very very sad. Of course he is getting loads of TLC and
I assume that eventually he will get over his loss. We would really
love to get another cat for Floyd to play with but feel that somehow
there must be a 'jinx' for us to be so unlucky.

Sorry to be so depressive but it does help to "off-load", especially to
other cat lovers who understand what it means to lose such beautiful
creatures. I would always be interested to hear if anyone else has
lost a pet with no apparrent cause for the death.

God Bless Ben, Arthur and Welly and a little thought for Floyd too.

    Regards

    Sandra

We're terribly sorry for your losses. Perhaps when you and Floyd
have had some time, a new friend will help him feel a bit better.

I too lost two of my cats within a short period. It is very hard to
take. Makes you think that you are doing something wrong, even though
you know logically that that isn't true. I am so sorry for your
losses. When the time is right for you, a new cat might help you come
to terms with the loss. That is what is helping me with my losses.

I, too, am so sorry to hear of your losses. This is such a hard thing.
Don't feel jynxed - I know other friends of mine have felt this way and
sometimes it's hard to shake but believe that you have done nothing
wrong - sometimes it's just that things are out of our hands.

My thoyghts and prayers are with you and your little one - I'm sure
you'll find him a companions when the time is right.

    Thank you all....

Floyd has been very sad... but is getting better. He has decided that
Charlie our Siamese is quite a good playmate after all, and Charlie has
decided that perhaps Floyd is not such a 'pain in the neck' as he
thought!.... This friendship is helping Floyd and Charlie looks so
    much younger.

    sandra...

so sorry to hear you lost your sweet baby. i lost my beloved sealpoint
siamese, cissy, to some unknown disease a few years ago. she was nine
at the time. she was seen by five different vets, but none of them
were (was?) able to figure it out. she went downhill very fast, and
died only a few days after falling ill. it still brings tears to my eyes
how loving she was 'till the end. i could just call her name and her tail
tip would twitch back and forth. deepest sympathy to you and family.
