4491.0. "Three (free) little kittens" by MEMORY::OSIER () Wed Mar 27 1991 13:53

    Free to good home...
    Three adorable kittens, about 7-8 wks old, all females (I believe)

    We are beginning to grow attached to these 3 but can't possibly keep
    them. They are box trained and great with kids (have been "killed with
    kindness" by my 4 yr old and friends since birth so are very gentle)

    We have kind of nicknamed them but you can call them anything you wish

    Blackie...this one's jet black and is "full of the devil"... the
    instigator of the bunch

    Sleepy...mostly black but with other colors mixed in.. although this
    one usually joins in the fun it is the one most likely to curl up next
    to you and fall asleep while the other two are still bouncing off the
    walls.

    Fluffy...little ball of fur - gray/dk gray tiger but with some lighter
    colors mixed in (Hard to describe but this one's real pretty). Fluffy
    is usually Blackie's favorite target but always gets even.

    If you (or someone you know) would like to own one (or more) of these
    loveable little characters please call me at

4491.1playing with the ideaJURAN::MILESMon Apr 01 1991 14:2720
    Jackie,

    A couple of questions...

    Are they long-haired or short-haired?

    Has the mother tested negative previously for feline leukemia? I hate
    asking this questions, but I just spent $300 on an 8-week old kitten
    who I had to have put to sleep. She had a variation of feline leukemia
    (panaleukapenia...sp???) and was starving to death. The vet told me
    she only had a 20% chance of living and that she would need constant
    in-home care for quite a while (I work). I just couldn't do it. I cried
    for a week.

    I have 2 cats (Princy and Precious) in my apartment right now. When I
    saw this note, I started playing with the idea of another cat. I'm not
    sure though....will my apartment be able to handle it????

4491.2more info on PanleukopeniaWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityMon Apr 01 1991 15:3714
Michelle,

I am sorry to hear that you lost your 8 week old kitten to panleukopenia. Just
to set your mind at ease, Panleukopenia is not a variation of Feline Leukemia.
Panleukopenia is also known as Feline Distemper, and cats can be protected from
it by being vaccinated yearly. Panleuk is usually fatal in young kittens, but
adult cats have been known to survive it. If you get any new kittens, it is a
good idea to have them Felv tested first, then vaccinated and boosted again
three weeks later. Until the kitten has received the first shot and the booster,
keep it isolated from your other cats. This will protect both the new kitten
and your current cats from illnesses that each may be harboring but not showing
signs of yet.

4491.3current cats tested negativeJURAN::MILESMon Apr 01 1991 16:0110
    Jo,

    Actually, I have had all the tests on my cats. When I was younger, we
    lost two cats to feline leukemia, so I am VERY aware of that deadly
    disease. When I got my first cat, I had it tested. After Peaches (the
    one who died of Panaleuk) was put to sleep, I got another kitten who
    also tested negative.

    thanks for the info....michele (contemplating a third)
