4441.0. "Black cat needs help...." by MRKTNG::SCHUBERT () Fri Mar 08 1991 13:06

I need some help, here goes:

I have three cats now, there indoor/outdoor except for the simese
kitten. All of a sudden this black cat with white paws and chest shows
up on the front stairs crying for food. Fine, I fill up a plate
of food and he munches out and off he goes.....three days later he
shows up again, only this time, hes hopping on the back legs. Looks
like a car hit him, no visable damage, but he's definately hopping.

Well, this has been going on now for 3 weeks. I' actually patted him
the other day, and now he sits on my front steps and crys till I bring
    the food out.

Problem is financially were strapped for money to fix this guy up. I
called the Nashua Humane society and they said they don't have a Vet on
call, so he'd probably be put down.

Can you folks help me make a decision? Should I have him put down at
the Humane society? Three cats is all we can handle right now, with
the simese going thru the fel luk shots and next he has to be
fixed....financially, can't handle expense of another one...

    This is driving me crazy............

Just sent a message to author off-line to get more info on kitty and
to offer my help. Hopefully, we will find the kitty is getting better
or at least more of the symptoms placed here to evaluate.

who volunteered to take the kitty back to a no-kill shelter
in Westminister this weekend!!!! Boy, do I feel a lot better!!!

See you this weekend Kim, and thanks everyone for your help.

4441.3here we go again....HYEND::KTRAINQUEFri Mar 08 1991 13:3811
The kitty will be picked up this weekend. I will be bringing kitty
to the vet and get him/her fixed up. After kitty is healthy, we will
put the cat up for adoption. Right now we are asking for donations
specifically for this cat. This way if there is more damage done then
what we think there is. We can trying saving kitty instead of putting
    it down.

    Thanks in advance.

4441.5Update......HYEND::KTRAINQUEMon Mar 11 1991 09:378
Kitty was picked up yesterday. Something is definitely wrong with his
backend. He looks like a drunken sailor when he walks. But he is
eating good and still going to the bathroom. I am dropping him off to
the vet this afternoon. It looks like the vet bill is going to be a
    big one.

    Kim,

That's just how Grey was when I first saw him. Unfortunately, we
couldn't get near him to get him to a vet in time. By the time we
could get near him the damage was ir-reversible. We just had him
put down a few weeks ago. Count me in for donations to help this
one out. Just wish I could have helped Grey more.

    Sandi and the Storm Troopers

PS. Grey was going drastically down-hill and not holding down food
    any longer.

This sounds like the kind of damage my Sweetie had before I adopted
him. The vet was able to fix it, with an operation. Just on the wild
chance that it's the same thing, let me note that the vet had to
"invent" a new method of dealing with a compressed pelvis -- apparently
its dangerous to do surgery in that area because of nearby nerves,
so instead of whatever normal dangerous method is usual, he
spread the pelvis apart (like a butterfly's wings) and wired it,
etc. Sweetie is still fine, thank God, years later. Just in
case the vet says things are hopeless and its the same type of injury,
you might mention this to him. I can provide a pointer to my
    vet if need be.

I called the vet at 2:00. They were drawing blood to do a FELV test
plus a few others. He definitely has some neurological damage (the cat
not the vet) they are just not sure what is causing it. They should
know by tomorrow. I'll post an update after I call.

The black stray I rescued has tested negative for FELV. YEAH!!!!!
He is a real love. He is an older cat but he definitely has a
neurological problem. He looks like a drunk when he walks. He is on
his way to kitty neuroligist located in Amherst, New Hampshire. His
appointment is at 4:30 this afternoon. When I get more news I'll let
    everyone know.

    Thanks for the prayers.

    Hi kim,

I talked with Priscilla last night and she told be about a cat
that had neurological problems and that we was going to a specialist.

I can't believe it's the same black cat. I never put the two together.

Yup it is. I picked him up and brought him to the vet handling Pat's
cats. All of his costs are being picked up by the shelter, plus people
have sent me donations specifically for him. He is really cute and
    lovable, and definitely a talker!

Kim - I will be anxious to hear how the kitty does. I live in
Nashua and didn't know there was a neuroligist in Amherst.
Could you share with us who it is?

4441.15This what I know....HYEND::KTRAINQUEThu Mar 14 1991 16:1414
I didn't even know that they HAD kitty neuroligists. Okay so I'm an
idiot, oh well. Here is the information on him.

Dr. Kenneth Schunk (yes that's his real name)
    	Ameherst, New Hampshire

Someone told me that it is a husband and wife team. The wife is a soft
    tissue specialist (whatever that is).

I got this information from the Fallon Animal Hospital in Lunenburg.

4441.17neurologist? cardiologist? Veterinary medicine is quite advanced!VMSDEV::BALLOUIt's late, but at least it's slow!Thu Mar 14 1991 17:2229
The comment about not knowing there was such a profession as cat neurologist
brought back a memory for me ...

Winchester, just three weeks shy of his first birthday, managed one day to come
up a bit short in the "graceful jump" department. Although he appeared unin-
jured after the fall, a few days later he was having what looked like very
serious trouble. (I was away on vacation at the time, and he was being taken
care of by my grandparents.)

I got back on a Saturday, and he seemed not to be too badly off. I decided that
I would take him to the vet first thing Monday morning. However, early Monday,
he had gotten much worse, to the point that he could not walk down stairs (he
would walk with his front legs and just let his back end drag down the steps).
The vet suggested I get him to South Shore Veterinary Hospital instantly, which
I did.

That was a revelation :-) First, he was examined by a cardiologist for signs of
stroke. Next, with an "all clear" result from the cardiologist, he was examined
by a neurologist. The neurologist decided to hospitalize him for further tests,
and I was advised that surgery might be necessary (although they wanted to avoid
it if at all possible).

Well, I am pleased to say that, although it now appears Winchester had indeed
hurt his back, he is fully recovered and has had no problem since then. I, on
the other hand, did get quite an education from the experience :-)

By the way, let me also say I think the staff at the South Shore Animal Hospital
walk on water, and that is only for openers ... Truly wonderful people, in my
experience.

I'm glad to hear your vote of confidence for south Shore Vet. Hosp
since my vets work in conjunction with them and that's where the
cats would be taken in an emergency.

4441.19Total Cost on 4441.....HYEND::KTRAINQUEFri Mar 15 1991 09:3914
Kitty was brought to the specialist last night. He either has
Cerabella Highproplasa (I know I spelled that wrong) or Encephiliatis
(that one too). They want him back in one month to do a spinal tap
plus more blood tests to tell which one. The total vet bill for his
FELV testing, his specialist visits, spinal tap, blood tests, and
spaying will come up to about $400.00. We are asking that donations be
given specifically for this cat. If I can't raise the money, we will
have no choice but to put him down. We will not place him, if we can't
be sure that he won't have to be put down due to encephiliatis.

Thanks again for the prayers and support to the little love-bug.

I have a great update for everyone. Karen Kolling has donated enough
to cover the rest of Weeble's vet bills. As a special thank you she
will be receiving something from the shelter.

Thank you for your prayers, and donations. It's nice to know we aren't

4441.25Willie WoWILLEE::MERRITTFri Apr 26 1991 12:2929
Well I don't have the medical update...but Priscilla
shared with me some little stories on this cat! Kim
do you have the medical update?

Well the cat's name is Willie Wo and hopefully I will
have a chance to meet him this weekend. He is currently
staying at Priscilla's house (and getting quite spoiled)
but he does not enjoy the other cats. Well Willie Wo is
a very quite gentle cat that loves human attention. As mentioned
he does have a little stagering walk and he scares
the heck out of the other cats. While I was on the phone
with Priscilla last night...she cracked up laughing...I
asked her what happened and she said well Willie Wo gets
a burst of energy sometimes...and he will jump 4 feet high
but land right on top of one of her cats. At night
Priscilla has to make a bed in her closet for Willie Wo...
she brings him his food, water, litter, and basket. He
is very content in the closet away from the other cats.

Priscilla would like to find this wonderful guy a home
where he will be the Only cat. If anyone is going to
the Pet Fair in Concord...Priscilla will have Willie
Wo there to meet everyone. (she has been training him
    on a leash)

If Kim does not have an update....I will try and get
    more info this weekend.

4441.28Willie Wo is a Daddy...MRKTNG::SCHUBERTMon Apr 29 1991 09:5720
Just to let you know Willie Wo (cute name) is a father! While
he was cruising my neighborhood, prior to me bringing him into my
house, him and Judy (neighbors cat) decided to have a fling. Judy
deliver 4 little kittens last week and they all look like Willie Wo!

Anyone interested in Willie Wo's babies, can contact me at _MRKTNG::
    Schubert.

Guess his walk didn't scare off Judy!!!

Reason we know Willie Wo is Dad of Judy's babies is my husband had
caught them and the neighbors also did!!!!

Last time I talked to Kim, she indicated that Willie Wo walks funny
because he never got a distemper shot when he was younger and it
finally caught up to him. He was tested for all the various dieases
and all came back negative. So, he will be walking like that for
    rest of his life.
