4435.0. "My Kitten has a Sweet-tooth" by OBSESS::FALLO () Thu Mar 07 1991 13:05

    	I have a question about my kitten (5 1/2 months), and I was
    	wondering if anyone else has had a similar situtation. My kitten,
    	Peanut, seems to have an INCREDIBLE sweet-tooth! She will try
    	virtually anything to get her little paws on anything that has
   	sugar in it. On Sunday morning I woke up to find out that she had
    	discovered the Hershey kisses I had put out in a candy dish Sat.
    	night, and unwrapped and devoured about 6 of them. And yesterday
    	I came home and to find that she had also discovered the sugar
    	bowl on the counter, and proceeded to knock the cover off, and eat
    	almost half of it! And she turns into a little savage when she can
    	smell something sweet and sugary. I am now much more careful about
    	leaving sweets out, but I was wondering is this normal? Could it
    	be that she is lacking something in her diet, that causes these
    	sugar cravings? Or could there be something medically wrong
    	with her? Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

    	I would appreciate any input on this.

    	Dina

4435.1Nope..normal kittie-behavior...DELNI::JMCDONOUGHThu Mar 07 1991 13:1211
      Nothing wrong with her...she just likes that sweet stuff! If she's
    anything like my "Cookie", she'll go berserk if she comes anywhere near
    "Twinkies"!! Twinkies are Cookie's absolute favorite...she'll sit
    there and lick the white frosting out of the cake and she gets 'into'
    it so much that her little eyes squint together in absolute exstasy....
    She also has a real passion for cookies---especially "Entenmanns"
    Oatmeal and Apple kind...those I have to break up into kittie-sized
    'tidbits' and she'll then sit there and scarf up an entire cookie or
    two...(I guess she fits her name though...)

    Watch out for the chocolate tho. There's something in it that's
    potentially harmful to cats. I forget what it is off hand, but I
    know chocolate is a NO-NO for cats.
      Sweets aren't good for them in general tho.

    WOW, John....

    That REALLY IS a "unique" kitty!

    Cookie sounds like a real doll!

4435.4No such problem with Twinkies!!DELNI::JMCDONOUGHThu Mar 07 1991 15:4815
      Re last...
      She's really a "pip"...her "best friend" in the house is our largest
    dog...a mixed breed that looks a lot like a Rottweiler and who weighs
    about 80 pounds! Those two sleep together...Cookie all curled around
    his head...and she loves to wash his face...

      Ref Chocolate... I know that the chemical "Alanine" which occurs in
    chocolate, is poisonous to dogs. Alanine is an amino acid, and a little
    bit of it can cause serious problems including death in dogs...this MAY
    be the same one that can affect cats adversley as well...

      BUT!! There ain't nothin' harmful in Twinkies!! ;-)

    re: Alanine - I believe that what I heard was that it was toxic
    to both dogs and cats.

    I bet there is nothing wrong with her...she's just a kitten.

    With seven cats we have learned a long time ago that I have
    to hide all food (especially sweets) and I can no longer have
    cute little bowls of candy on my coffee table.

    The other day...one of mine (noone will own up to it!!) opened
    the cabinet door, took out the box of bonkers, opened it up,
    and shared the contents with his friends. The box was
    empty when I came home...and noone was hungry. Now I have to
    find locks for my cabinets.

    Sandy I found those baby proof locks at your generic hardware
    store.. Aubuchons I think.. I have also had to
    lock my cabinets .. AHEM.. since I one little
    furry baby who has this WHO ME? look on her face
    all the time..and she is into EVERYTHING.. Happy
    has done a great job "teaching" her these
     cute little tricks. HMM..
    Kate, Happy and Preschie.. the "open sesame kids"..
4435.8Don't worry...be happy!KERNEL::LEYLANDSSharon Leyland, SUK IT SupportThu Mar 14 1991 07:4412
    I don't think you have a problem kitty...both my boys eat things which
    you would never dream a cat would be interested in...

    Dillan prefers savoury things like beans, chips, sardine and tomato
    paste toasted soldiers, prawn crackers etc.

    Sammie has the sweet tooth, he loves things like christmas cake, tinned
    custard and ice-cream.

    I wouldn't panic unless your baby starts looking poorly.

4435.9My little sweeties 8-)TALLIS::PARADISWorshipper of BacchusThu Mar 21 1991 17:1219
    I have found that kitties will sometimes have the STRANGEST food
    cravings! I already mentioned Ebony and her lettuce craving in
    another note...

    On the subject of sweet-teeth, our Cleo goes absolutely BONKERS
    for anything that's sweet and tart. There are these candies
    called "Smarties", which are tart little sugar-buttons that
    come in a little cellophane-wrapped roll (not the same thing as
    "Smarties" in the U.K., which I believe are M&M clones...). She
    goes so wild over them, she'll chomp down on the empty wrappers
    if we don't stop her! She's also the one who goes wild over
    coffee.... (give her a caffeine buzz and a sugar high, and she's
    bouncing off all seven walls 8-) )

    Then there's Athena... no refined sugar for her. She likes hers
    all natural: peaches, grapes (peeled, of course!), nectarines...
