How sad. She sounded like such a loving and caring person.
I'm sure I can rest easy now that Dukie will have someone
in kitty heaven to make sure he's ok.
The world needs more people like Pat. She will be sorely
missed by ANYONE in the animal community, even those who
never had the pleasure of meeting her.
Peace to you Pat.

Can anyone tell me who might be running the shelter until the cats are
placed. I would be interested in taking over the shelter and running
it, if no one else wants to.

| Kim,
I believe a women named Priscilla who lives in Lunenburg is running
the shelter right now. You may want to give her a call. Her number
is 582-4539. You can tell her that I referred you to her. She'll
probably remember me as I just talked to her last week regarding
possibly adopting a kitty.

| I just talked to Priscilla. They are trying to place the cats. The
ones that aren't places will be moved to a shelter on Priscilla's
property sometime around June/July. They are renaming the shelter to
The Pat Brody Shelter. They are in desperate need of canned Friskies
and kitty litter. If you know where we can get a good deal on either
please let me know.
If you want to donate funds you can send them to the following address.
The Pat Brody Shelter
c/o P.o. Box 142
Lunenburg, MA 01462
I am working on obtaining land to open a bigger shelter than what
Priscilla could do. It would still be the Pat Brody Shelter. But
please understand this is a long way off.
They are not advertising the cats to the general public. They are
going by word of mouth right now. They are VERY picky about who they
will place cats with. Pat wouldn't let people she thought were unfit
take her cats, and we are trying to continue that tradition.
If you have any questions or would like more information call me.

Also at BJ's you can get cases of 24 cans of cat food for
$5.99 or thereabouts. We got 9-lives the last time we were
there. And I know they had Whiskas. Sometimes it varies
so they may have Friskies now and then also.
I wish I had more time and $$ to get to BJ's and pick up
some of this stuff and get it to Fitchburg....sigh....
But we still have to get Audrey fixed.....

There's a B.J.'s on Rt. 9 in Westboro and also in Salem N.H. To
get to the one in Salem, take 495 N. to 93 N. to exit 1. At end
of exit ramp take a right at first set of lights take a left and
it's on the left. One thing though, you have to have a membership
to be able to buy anything there. You may want to check out the
feed and grain stores to see if you can get a better buy. There's
a Farmer's exchange in Leominster and Erickson's Feed and Grain

4414.16 | I knew I could count on Feliners! | HYEND::KTRAINQUE | | Thu Feb 28 1991 09:12 | 26 |
| Thanks for all the information.
Some of the cats they are trying to place have been in Pat's care for
years. Bubbles is a short haired tiger with beautiful markings. Pet
him and he is in heaven! He had been there 5 years when I first met
Pat back in 1988. Cooper is a gorgeous long haired apricot colored cat
who has to have a shot once a month for gingervitis. Gypsy is a long
haired calico who is very jealous of any other cat being petted. She
butts in until you pet her. Freckles is a short-haired white cat with
black dots all over hence his name. Mischief well I think his name
describes his personality just fine, he is also black and white.
Those are just a few of the cats I know Pat use to have. I haven't
been to the shelter myself for a couple of months. If anyone is
interested in obtaining a list let me know. I will get one shortly and
post it. Last count there were over 90 cats to place.
Pat had a main house with an enclosed run area for the cats, a house in
the back for the cats that tested FELV positive, and a row of 4 stalls
on the side. The stalls were known as solitary, used to hold cats that
started a lot of fights with the other cats. I am trying to find a
piece of land that will enable me to copy her shelter but at the same
time won't cost me a fortune. If you here of something let me know.

| Wow, it's great to see so many Feliners spring into action and show they
care! Kim, I wish you every success in continuing/starting a shelter.
I just spoke with the secretary at NEADS, and she gave me the following
update:
o As of yesterday, there are still 44 cats in the healthy house at Pat's
shelter.
Marilyn said they are all lovely cats. Several of them are long haired.
Just about any color is available. And, as I mentioned in reply 415.930,
they are all spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, and Felv negative.
o There are 14 cats in the leukemia house. (Apparently the decision to
send them to Elaine Bosler's shelter has yet to be made.)
o About 10 cats have been placed from the shelter, and 9 cats have been
placed from the NEADS center.
o Marilyn will continue to bring in a few cats at a time to be placed from
the NEADS center. (In reply 415.930, I also mentioned a promise that
Marilyn and the NEADS director had made to Pat -- that they would help
to place 20 cats if anything were ever to happen to her.)
If you are interested in taking one of Pat's cats, and West Boylston
would be more convenient than Lunenberg, you can call Marilyn at the
NEADS office (835-3304). She knows most of the cats almost as well as
Priscilla and will be happy to get the cat from the shelter and bring
it to the NEADS office. (As was mentioned in a previous note, care
will be taken to place the cats in good homes, so you should expect to
be "interviewed.")
o Given the number of cats still at the shelter in Lunenberg, the need
for donations of food, litter, and money is greatest there. Marilyn
would be happy to receive any donations of litter for the cats at the
NEADS center; she will forward any other donations to the shelter.
Pat's funeral is today. I hope it is a celebration for all that she did
for so many cats in need.

long commute. I will be running the shelter at night and on the
weekends and hopefully could get someone during the day to volunteer
time there.
The only saving grace is I don't have to have land that is perked. I
am not putting in a foundation or a full blown septic system. So I can
go with a piece of land most people won't touch. The BIG problem is
the money to buy the land. I am divorced with three small children. I
have to be very careful of what I do. We are in the process of
organizing a raffle to raise money to purchase land. Anyone wishing to
be put on a distribution list for update and announcements please send
me your internal mail address, plus vaxmail accounts to me. You will
then be placed on the list. Nancy DC is already on the list.

| Just to clarify things - If you want to send a donation to the
Silver Lining Memorial for Pat's shelter you have two options.
If your check is for $15 or more you have two choices:
You may make it out directly to "Pat Brody Memorial Animal Shelter".
(Don't forget to fill out a matching gift form. There is a checking
account being set up in that name and they are applying for non-profit
status.) Or, you can make it out directly to me and I'll write one
check for the full amount.
If your check is for less than $15 please make it out directly
to me. That way I can roll all the donations into one that will
qualify for matching funds from Digital.

| I had a very long conversation with Priscilla last night...and
she is such a wonderful person. We spoke about the feline notesfile
and she just thought that was the greatest thing since slice bread.
She thanks anyone who is willing to help in anyway.
She asked me to share that all her cats have had shots, are fixed and
have tested negative to Feline Leukemia. (willing to re-test). She
has many males, females, longhair, shorthair, any color you could want.
Most of the cats are between 1-5 years old. Currently there are no
kittens. She would love to talk to anyone about a specific cat
and share the plans they have for a new shelter on her property. I'm
sure it will be a no-kill shelter. Honestly...she just loves to talk
to cat people. There are in desparate need for cat food and litter.
Priscilla 508-582-4539
I asked her to put together some description of the cats which she
would like to have adopted so I can share them in the file. One
immediately came to her mind and in the next note I will post the
specifics. This cat is special and needs a special person.
I just love to talk to cat people too...we're so nice!!!

I need a home with a special person:
**************************************************
My name is Sabrina and I am a sexy (very sexy)
part Siamese 8 month old female cat. I have had
all my shot, been spayed and tested negative to
Leukemia and.......I NEED A MAN!
Please call Priscilla 508-582-4539
*************************************************
A short background on Sabrina is that she lived
her short life as the ONLY cat with a 30 year old
man. Life was wonderful...well she ended up in a
different home with a woman with many cats. Sabrina
was very unhappy. She then was boarded in the
Dog Pound and lived in a cage with many barking
dogs. Priscilla now has Sabrina in her house
with many of her cats...and she goes around spitting,
and growling at them all. She's still not happy.
She loves men and would love to share your husband
with you or belong to a single man.

4414.30 | Pat's heartbreaker story..... | HYEND::KTRAINQUE | | Fri Mar 01 1991 12:42 | 32 |
| I just talked to Priscilla. She is in tears. (of happiness) She
talked to Pat last Wednesday at 9:30, Pat was going over to Priscilla's
to look at the land Priscilla is thinking of building her shelter on.
Pat never made it. She went into a seizure and died at 11:30.
Priscilla's shelter would only be able to house 40 cats. It is going
to cost her around $3000 to build it. I told her I am in the process
of organizing a massive raffle to raise money for them, and that people
from feliner's were offering to help in any way they can.
Here are the plans for now. We are going to build Priscilla's shelter
and that is what we are trying to raise money for. She needs cat food
kitty litter, garbage bags, good paper towels, but most importantly
funds. Priscillas has paid out over $100 out of her pocket to keep the
shelter going for now. But she can't afford to keep doing this.
After Priscilla's shelter is built. I will be financing a piece of
land to build an additional shelter on. This shelter will house up to
150 healthy cats, and 50 FELV positive cats. We will concentrate on my
shelter after hers is built. Priscilla's shelter will remain in
operation even after mine is built. The girls operating Priscilla's
shelter may be changing the name. If they do they will let me know. I
will then post a note here. If they do change the name, my shelter
will be organized under the name of "THE PAT BRODY MEMORIAL SHELTER".
I think Pat deserves it.
I live in Westminster and will be traveling to Lunenburg a lot over the
next few weeks. If you want to donate something and need someone to
bring I can do it. I work at MRO1. Just contact me.

My dear friend who's kitten you have been praying for is going to
make a stained glass piece that he estimates will be worth about
$200 when its done. That will happen in April or May and we'll
be raffling off the piece.
We'll also be setting up tables at catshows so if you have ideas
for things to sell - home-made cat toys etc - then now's a good
time to bring them up. Perhaps we can have another Feliner
get together to make things to sell. (Cindy Fischer and I were
discussing this this morning.)
Keep the ideas coming folks. You're all very good at it.

| Just wanted to share that I brought some food over to
Priscilla's this past weekend and I had the pleasure
of going to visit Pat Brody's Shelter.
Well...let me tell you that I saw many beautiful
healthy cats. There was approximately 45 cats with
most of them being long haired....and oh how
gorgeoues. There were a few long hair grey ones
that were so beautiful...also there was one that
caught my eye because she was grey, peach and white
blend. (Not patches) These cats are very friendly and
look very content living in the surroundings
with many other cats. If anyone is interested in
finding out more about a specific cat...I would
be happy to help with getting a more detail
description. BTW...I met Sabrina (few notes back)
and oh what a little terror. She came running
when she heard my hubby's voice and climbed
right up on him. She them went to terroize
a 30lb cat that was paying attention to my husband.
She's something else....cute little black cat
but truly needs a man.
The shelter is amazing...Pat never had that much
money so she used every bit of scrap material
she could get her hands on. Right now there
are actually two separate houses (one for the
healthy and one for the carriers of Fel Luk).
Each house has cages (there all open), boxes
with blankets, beams, condo's, and platforms
covered with rug for the cats to sit and relax.
There was no odor and it looked pretty clean
considering the number of cats. Each house has
a kitty door leading to a fenced in outdoor space
that has many platforms and gadgets for the cats
to sit and play. It was truly amazing and I was
very happy to see how content the cats were.
(I visioned that all cats would be locked up in
separate cages and look very lonely...but that was
not the case.)
Priscilla also showed me the land she plans on
rebuilding the shelter on...and oh what a perfect
spot for a cat shelter. It's all farm land...very
little traffic, and just beautiful. I plan on
seeing Priscilla every weekend...so if you have
any donations which you would like me to deliver
please let me know. She is so appreciative for
any help she can get.
She is sooooo wonderful...and the cats are sooooo
beautiful. It really makes you feel good to help
out.
Sandy (I can't believe I went to the shelter and
didn't come home with a cat...but of course
we have seven and that's my limit. Ha ha!!)

constructed entirely of odds and ends, and was quite clean. There
were tons of beautiful, friendly cats of all types there. They all
looked quite well taken care of. When we walked into the shelter, we
were immediately surrounded by 5 or so cats, all vying for our
attention. As we walked through the shelter, cats kept coming over
to us, some of them at our feet, and some jumped up on tables and
pawed us until we patted them. We couldn't believe how friendly they
all were. I'd say that over half of the cats are long haired, some
VERY long haired, in fact. It was such a hard decision, picking out
just 1 cat...I wanted to take them all home with us! We narrowed it
down to a grey, very long haired, extremely friendly cat, and a
sort of long haired, white, dark grey, orange cat, named Bashful. We
took Bashful, since she wasn't as furry, as my husband is allergic
to cats and is worried about the long fur. Bashful wouldn't leave us
alone, so I don't know why she's called Bashful! She's a year and a
half old, and has never had a home. I just hope she's not lonely being
an only cat (for now, at least!). If any of you are contemplating
getting a cat (no kittens there now), give Priscilla a call. There's
a good chance she has a cat for you.

| There was a wonderful story in our local paper last night on
Pat Brody and her shelter. The article included a story about how
she opened the shelter. It all started when her aunt passed
away and left her a little money and one cat. The story also
shared how she worked day and night to ensure the shelter was
clean and how well she took care of her babies.
There are some cute pictures of cats too. If anyone is interested

| This is not about Pat and her shelter. Mod, please move it if
you think it fits better someplace else.
Did anyone see on the news last night that some poor elderly
lady is going to be evicted from a mobil home trailor park if
she doesn't stop feeding the stray cats?
Heart breaking. They were taking her off to court (no hand cuffs
thankfully) so the judge could hear her case.
It seems there are a lot of stray cats in this trailor park and they
meow and this woman hears them and can't bear to hear them and knowing
they are suffering.
Guess the by-laws of the park say NO PETS. The local shelter folks
are trapping them and trying to find homes for them. Also the shelter
people are going to court in her behalf as they feel if the park
personnal would help trap the kittes they wouldn't be having this
problem of strays. I believe it was in Carver.
It upset me so to see this poor elderly lady being led off to court
and she could loose her home because she can't bear to see an animal
suffer.

of creating/publishing the next Pat Brody Shelter Newsletter.
She asked me if I would do her a favor and get all the

She really appreciates all we have done!
Well I told her this was not an easy task..(it's not like we
have a note with everyones address) but I told her I would
collect as many of them as possible. We should do this off
line...so if your interested please send me your name
and address off line to WILLEE::MERRITT and you will be
added to the shelter list.
While your at it...she also asked me to collect some of
the wonderful suggestions/hints/behavior problems/disceases
we read in the notesfile so she can gain more knowledge
for the shelter. This is also not an easy task...I tried
using keywords but I can't believe how many I would have to
read. So if you can remember any specific notes that would
be interesting...please give me the number. Moderator I
will definitely strip the headings...don't worry!
I am also going to donate a cat book to the shelter. I currently

anyone have any other suggestions of good books.

| I made up a little brain dump of topics, which isn't exactly what you
asked for, but it might be useful as a checklist for Priscilla.
Maybe if we can agree on a final list, people could pick a topic and
put together an article on it. it might be nice to put the result in
FELINE for easy reference in some set of notes set aside by
the moderators. here's the suggested list, I'm sure I've forgotten
stuff:
equipment:
food and water dishes (role of plastic in acne)
litter boxes, number and placement of to ensure use
types of litter (aversion of some cats to scented litters,
alfalfa types, eye and respiratory problems induced by
"sand-type" litters)
scratching posts (tall and heavy to avoid tipping over,
horizontal variety, carpet vs. sisal(sp?))
toys (beware of problems when swallowed: no elastics, no
string, no beads, remove "eyes" from catnip mice, etc.)
dishes of grass (beware of poisonous house plants)
cat condos (beware of those with only one entrance, can
trap and suffocate cat if tip over)
collars (detachable, importance of id tag)
food (role in urinary tract infections, allergies to dyes)
carrying cases (no to cardboard, check secureness periodically)
problems:
litter box problems
scratching furniture
waking people up in the middle of the night or early morning
catching birds, etc.
fleas
behavior problems with humans (scratching, fear-induced hiding,
some cats don't like back, tummy touched, etc.)
behavior problems with fellow cats
adding a new cat to the family
dealing with the death of a pet (for humans and animals)
diseases:
urinary tract infections
feline leukemia
kitten susceptibility
"old age" and things like stepping stools to get up
to the bed
diabetes
heart trouble
dietary induced diseases (taurine deficiency, etc.)
distemper
respiratory infections
feline acne
rodent ulcer
stress induced hair loss
worms, various kinds, relation to fleas.
how to administer pills or liquid medicine or shots to a cat
what do do if your cat is lost
non-flame version of indoor vs. outdoor
is bathing a cat necessary and how to
is trimming claws necessary and how to
dangers:
windows with no or loose screens, balconies
swallowable objects (bad toys, string from roasts left around,
access to trash)
inadequate diet (vegetarian, all tuna, etc.)
flimsy or no carrying cases, cases whose bolts come loose
need to vaccinate
need to alter
too tight collars (check periodically), collars so loose that
they can get caught on things
airline travel (unpressurized baggage compartments, stopovers
with cat exposed to weather, suffocation by other baggage
against cage)

Instead of perusing the notesfile to extract notes and passing them along

contributors pass along info to Sandy off line that they feel may be
helpful to Priscilla. This is assuming that Sandy is willing to be the
one to compile all the information. This would have to be done separate

| Re: .65 recommendations of cat books
Sandy, I got a copy of Nels Pederson's new book "Feline Husbandry" for
my birthday in February and I think that it would be very useful to
anyone running a shelter. It deals with the types of things that one
would find in a multicat environment, whether it is a cattery, vet
office, shelter, or just a private home that has a lot of cats. It is
a very good book, covers lots of information from breeding methods to
cattery design and management (this is the most important chapter
IMHO as it deals with how to prevent the spread of disease in the
environemnt). It also has chapters devoted to diseases, parasites,
etc. I can't say enough good things about this book.
In my opinion, the only negative about this book is that it is costly
(about $45) and it is available only through mail order. The address
is listed in Cat Fancy, if I can find it, I will post it.

Jo if you do have a chance to post the address of the place I can

a bit expensive...but it sounds very useful for shelters.
I apologize for not reviewing the policy prior to typing the note.

4414.72 | New Shelter | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Mon Apr 29 1991 13:45 | 38 |
| Update to the new Pat Brody Memorial Shelter.
Well I went over to see Priscilla this weekend and was very
surprised to see the new foundation down for the new shelter.
They will be building the new shelter by peice work...a little
money...build the floor, a little money...build a wall. Hopefully
it can be completed by the end of the summer. I find the old
shelter very cold and damp so it would be great to move the cats
before winter.
I saw the design of the new shelter and it looks very interesting...
first you need to understand the old shelter....there is no heat,
no running water, no storge space, no counters to work on, and it
does have a small caged in outdoor space.
In the new shelter there will be three rooms with cat doors inbetween
so the little furfaces can go from room to room. Each room will have
two 4 x 4 windows (alot nice sunshine).There will be a Service
Hall which will be used to enter each separate room. Along the service hall...
there is storage shelves that go the length of the hall. There is
a work area with counter tops and a stainelss steel sink. There is
also a space for the kitties that need to be caged. These are the ones
that are new to shelter and are being introduced. There will
be kitty doors leading outside to a caged in outdoor space. The
dilemma right now is that there is a wonderful tree in the outside
area that Priscilla would like to keep for the cats....but she needs
to find a way to cage it in...so the little guys can't climb the
tree and get out. Any ideas????? We thought maybe we could cut
the tree somewhat...and build the cage over it.
I can't wait....I'm so excited about the new place.
Sandy

| Well now I have to mention the kittens....When I went to see
Priscilla...I also met all the little Momma cats and the kittens.
What a sight...I was a bit overwhelmed. Can you imagine...29
kittens. I just sat on the floor and let these little furballs
crawl all over me....I was in heaven!!!
Some of the kittens were so young...the eyes weren't even opened
yet...but some of them were fluff balls running around getting into
trouble. They reminded me of the dust balls you find under your
bed if you hand't vacummed for awhile. But these dust balls moved
fast!!
Now you may ask for a description...but honestly there are so
many. And the variety of colors is also amazing. I'll see if
we can get a list together on the ones that are adoptable.
But if anyone is interested in a kitten...please call Priscilla...
I'm sure you can find the kitten of your dreams.

| They should probably have plans for a small refrigerator space
as well, as they might have to store medicines that need refrigeration.
We have a mini-refrigerator at work that's about half teh size of
a regular one. They might try calling TreeHouse Animal Foundation in
Chicago, which runs a great shelter, and asking them for any ideas
and recommendations they have.
|
4414.78 | | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Mon Apr 29 1991 15:25 | 18 |
| I'm not sure how Pat heated it before...but now all they have is two
small electric heaters which they do leave on all night when it is
real cold.. in my opinion they are to dangerous to keep on at all times.
Well Karen...the tree is quite large already...and I'm sure it's
going to grow more. Priscilla would like to figure out a way the
tree can be captured in the enclosed area. I think the only possibly
was is to cut it down some...and build the cage over it. She wants
to keep the tree because it provides wonderful shade...which would make
half the outside area shady and the other side sunny. And of course
the tree will be used for climbing.
I believe they were going to add a small refrigerator....but I will
pass along the info to call the Treehouse Foundations for ideas. I
know Priscilla is working very hard to make her good connections with
all other animal groups.

Will the run have a top to it?
I picture a chicken wire type area set up, with chicken wire on the
top, to prevent any escapes. It would be easy to cut a hole to allow
the tree to stay there and grow. It would also provide a great shade.
I want to take a ride out there and see this place.....hopefully I
can set something up in June when my schedule slows down.

| Michele..
the plan is to have the outside area completed closed in. I'm not
sure if they will use chicken wire or some type of fencing. If they
cut a whole for the tree...and the tree is bigger then the fencing..
they would worry the cats could climb the tree and be on the outside
of the fence. Not good!! Somehow the tree has to be completely
enclosed by the fence.
Visiting the shelter...we should plan a Dec Feline tour of the
new and the old shelter sometime in June for those that would like
to see it!! Maybe the new shelter will even have walls by then!!

the Pat Brody Memorial Shetler came from...of course my memory
is going...so I hope I have this right!! All Momma cats will
be fixed when the time is appropriate and will be adoptable.
You can tell it is Kitten season!
1 Momma cat was just dropped off at the shelter (no one was there
at the time) Within one day this Momma had her kittens.
1 Momma cat and her kittens were rescued from an apartment
building. The momma cat had her kittens in the hallway.
1 Momma (Bright Eyes from Carol's barn) was captured and delivered
to the shelter...within two days she had her six little ones.
1 Momma Cat had her kittens in this man's Trans AM. The shelter
got a call from this guy saying "get this %$#@@$#% cat out
of my car." Obviously Priscilla dropped everything and ran
to Gardner
I believe there is one more Momma cat...and I can't remember her
rescue story. I think she came from leominster!

Sandy-
I'm not sure I follow you. My friend has a chicken, duck, bunny coop
made w/ chicken wire. It is completely enclosed, and I think trees
go through the top. I was thinking it they fit the wire to the
tree trunk....really fit it tightly (and gave enough consideration
for handeling future growth) I don't know how the kitties could escape?
Do you know if there is a time table available for the construction?
I'd really like to see what's going on.
Anyway, you can count me in for a feliners tour, provided I don't have
a show.....
Oh, another idea.....when we visited Buddy Dog, they had milk bones
for the dogs (.25 donation for 3 of them), maybe you could adapt this
idea for kitty snacks?
|
4414.85 | | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Wed May 01 1991 09:34 | 18 |
| I see what you mean now....but one problem is the tree is
pretty big...with many thick branches stemming from the trunk
...so I guess we would have to tightly secure the chicken wire
not only around the trunk...but also around every thick branch
that they could climb...right!!
I'm not sure there is a time-table...because it all depends on
funds. Like I said...if they get a little money..they'll add
a wall...etc. I do have a copy of the hand written proposal
design that shows what the shelter will look like from the
outside and in. If anyone would like a copy...send me mail

I'll most likely see Priscilla this weekend...so I'll see if I

Can you see all of us at the same time in a shelter FULL

we will all fit in the shelter...but we'll figure something out!!)
Someone also mentioned maybe bringing some donations with us...so
I'll ask Priscilla if she still needs blankets, sheets, food, litter.
(I'm sure she does...but there might be something she definitely
needs...so I'll ask??? or should we keep it a secret????)

Shelter needs: I spoke to Priscilla to see if she needed anything
in partiucular for the shelter and she would appreicate whatever
is donated. Here are my thoughts: food, litter, blankets (preferably
sheets for summer), baby receiving blankets (easier to wash), trash
bags, paper towels, $$$ donations, kitty toys, etc...
Now....I would like some ideas as to what time you would like to
meet? The restarant is right off of Rt 2...we could possibly
eat first, car pool to the shelter, and then I could bring
you right back to the restaturant to pick up your cars and you
can head home. How does that sound????? Or would you prefer
to go to the shelter first then eat? Any thoughts out there...

| Update on the Adoption at the Shelter. This weekend was
a wonderful weekend for adoptions:
Mindy and Baby (aka Butterball) - Found a wonderful new
home with a friend of Bonnie's. Of course this is only
a trial period...but from the sounds of it I believe it
will be permanent. True love!!!
Domino - A black/white very friendly sweet big cat found
another wonderful home with another one of our feliners. (Hope
we see an introduction soon and I'd love to hear some
stories.)
Kitten - One gray and white kitten found a home with a family
who has two children. they all walked away with smiles...
and the kitten seemed real content. Pat Murphy almost
took this one home...very sweet personality.
Zack - White male cat with a spot of gray on the head will
be fostered by this woman until August/September and once
she moves to her new house....Zack will join her.
This was all between 3-5 Saturday afternoon. What a great day!!

4414.125 | Baby & Mindy find a home... | MCIS2::HUSSIAN | But my cats *ARE* my kids!! | Mon May 20 1991 16:25 | 74 |
| Hi Everyone!!
I wanted to let you all know about our experience at the shelter this weekend,
and to give you the report on two cats my friend adopted. This seems like a
good place to do it, since they were from Pricilla's shelter, if the mod's
feel it would be better someplace else, that's fine too.
We arived at Pricilla's house at 2:30 on the dot. She & Pat Murphy were there
waiting for us. Pat brought little Cookie w/ her. Cookie is a little old poodle
who enjoys car rides & being w/ her mom! She's a little doll, too!
Pricilla had to go & meet Diana (I forget her last name, right now, but she's
"Tykey's Mom"!!! ;^)) Then we all left from Pricilla's & headed for the shelter!
As soon as I got there, there were tons of kitties to look at! Sandy came over
& we both introduced ourselves. Sandy is a REALLY great person, she helps these
kids out, and treats each one like they're hers!
So...that's three feline noters I met in one day!! WOW! What fun!!
After we toured the shelter, kissed & hugged all of the kitties (well, all of
the ones that would come near us!) Pricilla & Joanne filled out the necessary
paperwork. I went around & made more friends!! Then we put Baby & Mindy in
their boxes, and AWAY WE WENT!
The ride was about an hour long, and the kids HATED IT! They yowled & howled
almost the whole time! We decided on the ride back to re name butterball. We
decided on "Bubba" at first, so he wouldn't be too confused. Then, we decided
that this SWEET love bug, wasn't a "bubba" more like...A BABY! We called him
baby! He likes it too! Mindys name is going to stay the same.
When we got in, they sniffed around & the usual other stuff. Then they got
all cuddly, and lovey dovey. It was SO cute! Baby came right up Joannes chest
and hugged her while he stuck his nose in her EAR & pur_rrrr-RRRR-rrrr'ed
his heart out! He purs so loud, I could hear him from the other room!
Mindy kept her distance for the first 12 hours or so. She wasn't afraid, or
distant, she just wanted to hang around w/o being touched. It was nice tho.
she wasn't hissy, or resentful. She even let us pet her if we wanted. Now, she's
a TOTAL ham! She flops on her back & shows her big white belly (She's black
w/ white belly, chest, nose & paws...A REAL BEAUTY!) and she comes over for
Loving if she sees that you have extra to give away!
Her Brother, Baby, is all gray, w/ white chest, tummy, & paws. They're both
big, sleek looking, clean cut, kitties! We agreed that they were the best ones
there...then we remembered Domino! He's a luv bug too! He was all over anybody
who came near his cage (he was fighting off mites & worms, so he was seperated
for a few days), looking for a rub, a petting, or just some kind words. I can
see why he won Diana's heart!!! Boy, did we all get lucky that day!
On Saturday night when Joanne went to bed, both the kids slept on her! Baby,
the affection craving, maniac, was driving her nuts! She said she couldn't sleep
almost all night, cuz she was too busy giggling!! He kept purring in her ear,
and he'd put his nose up under her hands trying to get her to pet him! She
didn't want to put them out of her room, so she HAD to keep her hands under
the pillows, of under herself so he'd leave her alone & go to sleep!
I went over yesterday, and they were happy to see me! I think they remembered
me from Saturday. They were being pretty lazy all day, she said. I told her that
the stress probably made them tired & that they'd be running around & playing in
no time! (And then she'd wish these days were back! ;*))
Mindy loves to look out at dogs, cats people & cars! Joannes windows are
right off the street, so there are PLENTY OF EACH for her to watch. Yesterday
she was sound asleep on the chair in front of the window, she heard a dogs
leash & she was up like a shot!!! She had to check it out & see what was going
on in*HER* neighborhood!! I love it!!!
I'm going over to Joannes in ten minutes to visit her! (Hah! She's never had
me over so much! I wonder if she knows I'm coming to see her kids!?!) ;*)
I'll keep you all posted on the progress of Mindy & Baby!!

4414.127 | uuuugh! I'm so bummed out! | MCIS2::HUSSIAN | But my cats *ARE* my kids!! | Wed May 22 1991 16:10 | 57 |
| Well, Pat, I'm afraid I'm not going to make your day this time...
I don't even know how to say this, so I'm just going to come right out
with it.
Joanne has decided not to keep the cats. Priscilla DID ask her to
do this on a trial basis...and I guess for a GOOD reason. I'm so
depressed, and so is Joanne, but things JUST aren't going to work out.
I don't want you to think it's because of the cats, because I can
HONESTLY say that I've NEVER, EVER, EVER, in my whole life seen two
more affectionate & loveable cuddle bugs!! I mean it, if they weren't
declawed, I'd take them myself!! As a matter of fact, my boyfriend said
he was sorry our place wasn't bigger or we would take them, then I re-
minded him of the claws vs. no claws issue. And I AM NOT declawing my
two girls!!!
It seems as though Joanne isn't ready for the responsibilities, and she
is alergic to the hair. I couldn't believe it when she called me & said
she was going to return them to the shelter. I'm very embarrassed by
this whole thing & would appreciate it if I didn't have to be subjected
to opinions of people who disagree w/ Joannes point of view. Her point
of view is not the issue here, finding these two BEAUTIFUL cats a new,
loving, caring home, is the issue. Besides, if she doesn't want them I'm
NOT going to talk her into keeping them, that would be unfair to both
her & the cats.
I really wish things had worked out better, but there is no way I could
have known this is how it would end up. I've gotta stop beating myself
up about this.
I wish w/ all of my heart that we could find another home for them &
NOT have to take them back to the shelter, but I don't know how
Priscilla will feel about that. I told Joanne SHE would have to call &
I would post the note that breaks everyones Heart! :*( The reason I
feel bad about sending them back to the shelter is because they're
decalwed, and they MUST feel pretty insecure about that, especially
when the fur starts to fly (which is inevitable in a shelter w/
numerous cats), and they are SO loving & sweet, they deserve a happy
home, where they're the center of attention.
I'm so sorry to have put them through this, I just hope it doesn't
mean they'll have a difficult time bonding w/ someone else, as easily
as they bonded w/ Joanne.
Please keep a lookout for me for anyone looking for TWO (they MUST
go together) declawed, short haired, 1 & 1/2 year old, TOTALLY loving
and sweet babies, and tell them that THEY WILL NOT BE SORRY! I can
guarantee that!
I really want to stress that the behavior of these cats was NOT the
issue!! I'll be posting some cute stories about them & their
descriptions in the adoptions note, later on. I'm going to run & bury
my head in the sand for now, tho!
Sorry to break the news,
Bonnie

| Bonnie,,do not blame yourself. Both Priscilla and your
friend knew it was on a trial basis. We all would
have like it if it worked out for the best...but it
didn't.
Butterball and Mindy are two sweethearts.....and hopefully
a wonderful new home with a wonderful family will soon
take them in their hearts forever. They surely deserve
the best...but for now they have each other!!
It's sad it didn't work out....but these two babies will
be okay! Your friend is missing a big piece of happiness
that I surely couldn't be without!!! I couldn't imagine
a house without a pet or two or three or four or five....etc.

| I'm so sorry, Bonnie, but please don't blame yourself. We know how
hard you (and the two cats) tried to find them a home. If someone
isn't ready for that responsibility then it is definitely not for them.
Knowing what wonderful cats they are just from meeting them Saturday I
feel confident someone will eventually adopt them. In the meantime,
we'll know they are well cared for and loved by Priscilla and her loyal
volunteers.

Sandy,
Let me see if I can help with the directions.
From the North: Take your favorite way to 495S. Take the
Leominster/Fitchburg Rte 2 exit. (there will also be a sign
saying Fort Devens). This exit is right in the Littleton
area. Stay on Rte 2 for approximately 20 minutes. You will
pass through Shirley, Ayer and Fort Devens. You will pass
a weigh station and a roller skating rink on your right.
After the roller rink you want to take the third exit. I
don't believe the exit itself is labeled but if you look
to your left over the highway, Searstown and Chopsticks
are right there. Take this exit. At the end there will
be a car dealership and a bunch of gas stations. Take a left.
You'll pass back over Rte 2. Then take your next left.
You'll pass the police station on the left. Take yet another
left and then a right into the Searstown entrance. Chopsticks
is on your right!
From the east, follow these directions starting with Rte 2.
From the west, get onto route 2. Once you pass the Leominster
exit where the Holiday Inn is (on the right) you'll want to
take the next exit. Take a left into the Searstown entrance
and Chopsticks is on your right.
From the south. Take your favorite way to Rte 495N. Again,
you'll want the Rte 2 Leominster/Fitchburg exit. Then
Follow the directions from Rte 2!
Hope that helped a little!

Well if adoptions don't pick up this week...you guys going on
the Field Trip will see many cats. There are quite a few
new ones that have just recently been rescued....the
shelter is pretty full again. (that's not counting the kittens)
(god..where do they all come from...are there that many %$#@&*
out there!)
A few of the unique new arrivals are as follows:
o pretty blue eye siamese - Truly looks like a purebred...about
9 months old. this poor little one is very shy, scared and
was recently fixed. Need someone with patience and alot of
love to share. The original family....decided they didn't
want a Siamese.
o Beautiful new cat ...Lacey. Okay..I'm not good with identifying
the kinds of cats. But another volunteer said it looked like a
cross between a Himmy/Birman. Very unique blue eye cat with
beautful colored fur and the greatest personality.
o Very big/beautiful white cat...that thinks he is a kitten.
This guy is looking for love...he continues to rub up against
anything he can. He is so so sweet and loveable. (For those
of you who knew Domino....this guy is just like him!!)
o Precious is a cute little calico girl...that has a black
little mustache (kind of looks like hitlers). She is so
shy, sweet, and just waits for love. She is a little loner
at the shelter...if there is excitement...she just sits back
and watches.
Oh well that is just a few....there is about 30 more!! Just think
of all the love these guys will get the day of our Field trip!!

4414.145 | Change of Plans | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Mon Jun 24 1991 09:17 | 29 |
| Well we are still on for June 29th...but we have had a little
change in plans which I hope won't bother anyone. Instead of
going to Chopsticks.....
Priscilla has offered to have a picnic lunch at the site of the
new shelter. She will have it catered by a local woman and the
price will be approximately $5.00-$6.00 per person. (much cheaper
then the Restarant) Some suggestions for food were veggie salads,
fruit salads, sandwichs,,,etc. (I can find out the specifics...)
The walls, floor and roof are now up on the New Shelter and Priscilla
and some of the voluteers would like to christen it with our
Feline friends. You should see it....it's gorgeous, it's big, it's
wonderful... with a beautiful country view!!!! The cats are just
going to love it!!!!
Once we have our picnic...we can take a ride to the Old shelter
and visit all the cats. The old shelter is only approximately
5-6 minutes away.
We can either still meet at Chopsticks...and ride together...or
I can provide clear directions right to the new shelter which is
right off RT 13.
Hopefully these last minute change of plans...won't upset anyone.
Any comments????

It was nice to see everyone at the shelter outing Saturday, and you
again Sandy.
Sandy, I would like more information on "sponsoring" a shelter cat
until it's adopted by someone? I really liked all of the cats/kittens
there but the one that I wished I could've take home (but know I can't
with my crew just adjusting to Dandy's arrival) is the big, red
mackerel tabby boy with four double paws. He was so comical with his
acrobatic stunts on the resting boards outside and seemed quite
interested in meeting "Rusty", the NEADS Golden Retriever there with
Cindy.

O It cost just $10 a month and you will receive a

O You can also have visiting rights and your name
will appear in the Paws for Thoughts newsletter.
Pat specifically your talking about Honey Bear who is the
big double paw red cat. Honey bear's brother Cheeto is
also there and they are looking for a new home together.
Your right Honey Bear is a clown...and Cheeto is a little
layed back. Both are beautiful red furfaces.

Sorry it took me so long to reply...I've been out & busy.
I just wanted to thank you Sandy, Michelle & Roberta for a GREAT day
last saturday!! I really had a great time & had lots of GREAT cat
stories to go home to Dave with!!!
I especially loved the little black & white furface that PURRRRRS when
you pick him up. I didn't catch his name, but he can't be more than a
year old, if that! What a little love! Simon was a real sweetie too!
All of them were really, but I *DO* have a few favorites! I got to see
my buddy Red, who has been found to have Leukemia. I went to the leuk
house to visit him & got mega-love from all of those babies!! I thought
they were NEVER gonna let me go! And then I got some WONDERFUL news
about Velvet. I didn't see her anywhere & I asked Sandy, "Where's
Velvet?" Sandy smiled REAL BIG, and told me she had been adopted!!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! She was a real sweetie & very deserving of
a good home!
Thanks again Sandy, for a wonderful time, and thanks Michelle & Roberta
for the ride!

4414.163 | The Shelter needs your help.... | USDEV1::NDC | Putiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313 | Tue Jul 30 1991 15:46 | 34 |
| I just got off the phone with Priscilla. She has about FIFTY kittens
in her house (not the shelter). She's just out straight. She spends
hours every morning feeding, cleaning and medicating(some). SHe says
she has no time for her own business.
It sounds to me like she's really over extended. She has had to turn
cats away and its just breaking her heart.
I have three requests to make on behalf of Priscilla -
1. If you know ANYONE looking for beautiful, healthy kittens PLEASE
refer them to Priscilla. I have her phone number - policy prevents
my posting it here without her permission and I didn't ask - so
feel free to contact me. MY home number is 617 849-9771 (before
8:30pm on work nights please).
2. IF ANYONE can offer a fosterhome for some of these kittens please
contact Priscilla.
3. The shelter really needs to start getting some space at the shows.
Priscilla is just too busy to make the arrangements so I'm hoping to
do some phone calls myself and I'd appreciate some help. I'll
coordinate to be sure we cover all the upcoming local shows. If you
would be willing to help, contact me.
Also, once we get tables at the shows we'll need folks to staff the
shows. I've also discussed with Priscilla the idea of entering one
of the cats or kittens in the show. I figure the ribbons will help
"sell" the cat. If you'd be willing to staff at local shows
please contact me also.
Thanks for you help.

| We had a shelter meeting last weekend and I had the opportunity to
ask Prisiclla about the Non Profit status. All the paperwork has
been sent in and the clerk has called Priscilla with some specific
questions...so atleast they are working on it! Hopefully it won't
be too much longer. Karen...I send my donations directly to
the Lunenburg address.
I also got an update on the shelters financial situation...and it
is pretty grim right now....so any donations (no matter how small)
would be welcomed and very much appreciated. Also it was noted
that the shelter has alot of dry cat food...but the wet cat food
is running low with limited funds to keep it supplied. So if
anyone can donate some wet food....that would be great.
The new shelter is comming along fine...but again funds are limiting
what we can complete. We were hoping to have the cats in the new
shelter by September...but that dream does not look like it will
be fulfilled.
All the volunteers are working very hard on contributing to fund
raising events....such as the Doggie Dip, making crafts to be
sold at cat shows, trying to get involved in other local country
fairs. We are also going to start a small 20/20 raffle...just to
see how we do. And once we get a third prize for our other raffle
..that should be starting soon too! We're thinking of other
events such as a bake sale or car wash!

4414.166 | Adoptions... | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Mon Aug 05 1991 14:21 | 34 |
| Happy days are here again!! I just need to share these
adoptions with you....
Casey - Casey was an original Pat Brody cat that has spent
7 years at the shelter. She found a wonderful home
with a woman and her young son. They have promised
to spoil her rotten and give her lots of love
Lacey - For those of you who went on the Field Trip...Lacey
was the beautiful himmy. She found a wonderful
home.....but I'm not sure who took her.
Mr. Stubbs - Well Mr. Stubbs was the cat with the stub of a
tail that lived in the Feluk house. Mr. Stubbs has
been there for a couple of years and has never been
sick. Well a wonderful family of a Mom and four kids
chose Mr. Stubbs to adopt. Priscilla spent alot of time
with the family explaining Feluk, stating he has to be an
only cat (unless they chose another feluk cat) and that
he must be an indoor cat. Well Mr Stubbs not only
has a whole family to love...he also lives in a 9
room Victorian house with plenty of room to run.
Note: It is so sad to go to the Feluk house and not
see Mr. Stubbs (he was the king of that house)...but
to know that he now has a whole family to love....is
so wonderful.
Well with good news you have bad news....there are approximately
60 beautiful cats currently at the shelter...and about another
40 kittens at Priscillas house who are all looking for homes.

| Sandy, you might want to check out the fundraising notesfile on
DPE::FUNDRAIS -- there are some good fundraising ideas in there.
Also, as far as food donations go, try instituting a "food barrel
program" in area supermarkets. It basically involves working with the
store managers to permit the placement of the barrel. Then just get
your hands on some cardboard barrels, paint them, put the
organization's name on them and wait for the food to pile up! Once you
see how well the program is running, then you can establish a schedule
for pick up. The stores get really upset when the barrels overflow and
no one's picking up the food. They don't mind donating the space
because it's a good cause and it generates goodwill for them, but they
don't like to maintain the program.
Good luck,
Mike

| Thanks Mike....I never knew there was a fund raising notesfile. You
bet I'll be reading it!!
Also as far as the food barrel...I remember quite a few years ago
(before I got involved with the shelter) Pat Brody use to have
the food barrels in some of our local supermarkets. I have no
idea why this stopped...but I'll have to ask.
I also love your idea of the Papa Gino's night
with some of the proceeds going to the shelter. Did this work
out good for you????
Thanks again...

| DEC has something called a community relations program that makes
grants to local charities etc. At our site, its run by a group of
volunteers. They can dole out $500 or so. Maybe this has fallen
victim to cost cutting, but if not, it's worth a try. The organization
has to write a form type letter, if I recollect correctly. Maybe
Personnel at your site can tell you who to get in touch with.
|
4414.170 | | CUPMK::PHILBROOK | Customer Publications Consulting | Mon Aug 05 1991 15:57 | 34 |
| It could be that the barrels were removed because they weren't being
maintained. This, I understand, is the single most frustrating aspect
of the program for the store managers. Plus, people use the barrels for
trash and after a while it looks just plain bad and the store ends up
having to pay their own employees to maintain the barrels.
Papa Gino's, Burger King, as well as a local pizza parlor called Bob's
Pizza, all do the non-profit fundraisers. They're great cause all we
have to do is get people to show up for dinner and as long as the
target sales goal is made for the night (at Papa Gino's it's $575) we
get our 15% so there's very little for us to do to make money. The one
we did in Bedford in June is still a mystery to us. Papa Gino's takes 3
to 6 weeks to get back to us after the event so we still haven't heard
what we made. But they did tell us that the target sales goal was met
by 7pm and they were open until 10pm so I know we made something.
We've scheduled another one at the Papa Gino's on 101A in Nashua on
Aug. 12 and we'll be doing yet another one at the Papa Gino's at the
South end in Nashua and then we'll go back and do Bedford again, and
so on. The restaurant doesn't care how many you do. Papa Gino's does
these events on Sunday and Monday nights (their slowest nights of the
week) so they like to have someone helping to bring in business for them.
We're also doing one at Bob's Pizza in Nashua on Sept. 16 -- same deal
except that Bob doesn't have a target sales goal -- he's giving us 15%
of whatever he makes between 5pm and 11pm!
We're having problems with Burger King because they insist that they'll
give credit only for customers who display a shelter membership card.
We're still working on them.
Good luck!

| We are definitely booked into the CFA show in East Providence RI
on Sept 14th & 15th. I am hoping that we are also into the TICA
show in Hyannis.
We need some folks who would be willing to put in one day at the
East Providence RI show. Initial reactions from the volunteers have
not been real positive about driving that distance. They are really
burnt out from all the work at the shelter. The show manager told
me that they have VERY good luck placing cats at that show so we
really shouldn't pass this up.
I had planned to help Priscilla with the Hyannis show on the 14th.
I have other committments for the 15th.
If you can help - maybe you're going to be at that show anyway -
please contact me.
Also, we are in at the Fitchburg CFA show on October 12-13. I don't
think there will be a problem staffing this show.
I'll keep you posted as I get other committments for shows.

| Update:
We can't get into the TICA show in Nashua. The show hall is too
small for them to be able to have any shelters.
Also, -
I talked to Priscilla this morning. She is trying DESPERATELY
to get the new shelter ready for the fall. They are in desperate
need of $$. They are having the heating system put in and Priscilla
says she's not sure where she's going to get the money to pay for that.
They need a special type of sealed linoleum that will cost them $4000!
Yes that's FOUR THOUSAND! If you know anyone who might be willing to
sell the right kind of linoleum to them for cost, and/or donate the
labor to install it then start sweet talking them right now.
Otherwise - send any donations you can to Priscilla. Contact me for
address.

| Karen...I don't understand the price either...but it is a special
linoleom used in Vets offices. It is recommended for anywhere
many animals will be roaming. It not only lays on the floor...but
is also installed about 4 ft up the wall. It is suppose to be
a safeguard against germs/bactieria...and saves the walls from
any cat spraying.

| If the linoleum is going to cover the entire floor of the new shelter
plus 4 ft. up the walls, then this is a significant area we're talking
about, and good linoleum ain't cheap. Nine years ago it cost me several
hundred dollars to put very good (but not the best) quality Armstrong
no-wax linoleum in my average size kitchen and tiny dining area, so
$4000 to do the shelter in heavy-duty stuff might even be a real deal.
Not that that makes it any easier to come up with the cash.

| Where have you gotten your linoleum estimate(s) from? Well, I suppose
there's no point telling me, since I'm not familiar with the Lunenburg
area, but maybe other people would have suggestions as to where to go.
Can you buy this type of linoleum from anyone or is it just carried by
certain dealers?

For lack of a better place to put this.....
I have already contacted Priscilla about this, but she didn't seem
overly interested.
My sister manages the Tandy Leather store in Waltham and when I
talked to her on Saturday she said that they were remodelling the
store. She has some display cases and some shelving that will be
thrown out Tomorrow unless someone would like any of it.
If you are interested please contact me asap or her (Jeanne) at

| ** Bonnie this will make your day **
Well for those of you that remember the stories about Butterball
and Mindy who are the declawed brother and sister at the shelter
that was adopted and returned. Priscilla had felt so bad for them
that she didn't have the heart to return them to the shelter..so they
have been staying at her house. Well I am very help to say...
that a wondeful young woman and her son have adopted both of
these wonderful cats. Mindy was her normal self...and stole the
show with her purring and rubbing...and Butterball was playing
Mr. shy but sat there with this cute look that said "take me".
These two deserve a wonderful happy home...and let's all keep
our fingers crossed that they will have a very happy life with
their new friends for a long long time.

wonderful furfaces!)
I can't wait to call my friend who ended up returning them. She was
very sad about it, and will be so happy to hear this news!!! :*) :*)

4414.194 | Providence & Hyannis a Success! | CIMNET::GLADDING | Noters do it with a 8-) | Mon Sep 16 1991 17:22 | 44 |
| Here is an update on how we did at the Providence and Hyannis
shows:
Sandy Merritt, her sister Donna and I covered Saturday at the
Providence show. We brought crafts that were made by the volunteers,
and some that were dontated. We also brought four young cats - Billy
who is an orange tiger, 6 months old, Baxter, his littermate who
is white with grey tiger stripes on his head and part of his body,
Blackie, a 5 month old male (obviously all black!) and Crackerjack, a
5 month old calico - very pretty coloring.
The show was not very well attended at all on Saturday. We sold a few
crafts, spoke to some people interested in adopting, but went home
with all four kitties and VERY long faces.
A couple of other volunteers covered Sunday. They called us Sunday
night, ecstatic - they adopted out Crackerjack and Billy!! They also
did VERY well selling crafts in the afternoon. So we considered the
weekend a rousing success!! We also made some good contacts with the
breeders, show people and some of the vendors. We got a very
generous catfood donation, and the show people split the earnings of
a raffle with us - very nice of them to include us.
Priscilla, Nancy DC and other shelter volunteers covered the Hyannis
show. They brought three adult cats - Precious, a very affectionate
calico female, "H28", a medium-long haired black & white male (H28
came from an abuse case where we took in 40 cats, so most of them
still don't have names, unfortunately), and Noodles, a brown tiger
female. At the end of the weekend, Precious and H28 found good homes!
Unfortunately, Noodles has not yet gotten a home. She had a very
bad attitude problem when she first arrived at the shelter (biting and
hissing at everyone). She did get better once she got used
to things, but I think the stress of the show got to her, and she
reverted to her old ways. The crafts sold very well, and again, good
contacts were made at the show.
The next shows coming up are in Fitchburg October 12-13 and Boxboro
November 9-10. Hope to see some Feliners there! And we're still
accepting donations of crafts - if you are a crafty person and can
help out, it will be very much appreciated! And thanks to those who
already helped out, especially Nancy DC for getting us involved in
the first place!

4414.195 | That is encouraging news! | BOOKIE::FISCHER | | Mon Sep 16 1991 19:10 | 18 |
| That is great news! Congratulations to everyone who made all this
possible!
I think I met Crackerjack at the shelter last week. She followed me
around, reaching up to be patted, and even climbed a post to be at eye
level with me! She was quite irresistible and was bound to be adopted.
This gives me all the more encouragement to work hard with Clarissa and
Gypsy to get them ready for adoption at the Boxboro show. I feel fairly
confident that Clarissa can be adopted, but the show setting might be
too stressful for Gypsy. In the meantime, I'm having fun with them. It
was amusing to watch their reactions to being inside a house for what I
guess was the first time in their lives. They even learned to coexist
with a service dog I had at the house over the weekend.
Wish us luck!

| Correction: NOODLES is a BEAUTIFUL brown patched tabby. And a
very nice lady. She requires her own space, but she was quite
relaxed at the show and very well behaved when I brushed her
up.
I'll add some more good news....The total "take" for the two shows
including adoption fees, was OVER $700! That does NOT include the
check that the E Providence show folks promised and I think the
Hyannis folks may be sending us some money from the proceeds also.
And you can't put a value on networking. You never know how that
will pay off in the future.
Thanks to all who helped make it possible.

| And I had a heck of a good time too and will be looking
forward to attending the other shows...and continueing to
make more crafts. It's nice to know that alot of the crafts
did sell...considering the time and money the volunteers
put into them...but now we're motivated to continue!!
Cindy please keep us updated on your foster care for Gypsy
and Clarissa! These two cats were two of Pat Brody originals...
and Cindy has offered to foster them until an upcomming show...
where hopefully they will be adopted. it must be a wonderful
break for them...getting away from shelter life..and it must
be very interesting for you!! Have you attempted bath yet!!!!
Thanks to all those that contributed material...and thanks to
NDC for getting us involved.

4414.203 | Yes, Gypsy can be a real love! | BOOKIE::FISCHER | | Tue Sep 17 1991 14:07 | 15 |
| Yes, Gypsy is a very pretty girl who can be very affectionate. She has
been sleeping on my bed and can be quite a lap cat. She hasn't taken
too many swipes at me, but maybe that's because I am learning when to
anticipate them. She can really play hard, but then she needs quiet
time, as she tends to become overstimulated (which seems to be what is
happening when you pat her in response to her affection). She was quite
proud of having caught a moth last night, right out from under Clarissa
(Hey, that was my moth!). She got along well with the service dog and
only bopped him once. It seems to be the humans that she feels the need
to keep in line. As for a bath, well, that has been postponed. When my
neighbor and I couldn't even get their claws clipped, we figured it was
best to give them more time to settle in. ;-) Saturday I'll be taking
them for their annual vet check. Wish us luck!

| RE: 4414.172 Linoleom for the shelter
Just wanted to let you know that Priscilla did make some
phone calls and got the linoleom for the shelter for $2800
vs $4000. It is the same bacteria fighting linoleom and
the only difference is that it is not as pretty (who cares!!)
and it will be poured in so there will be no seals. (which is
actually better) It is being installed THIS WEEK!!!!!!
The one other major goal we have before the cats can be
moved is to install the outside fencing for the courtyard!!!
Within a week or two Priscilla will start getting estimates
on that cost....and we will continue to work hard on raising
the money!!
We're almost there!!!!!!
