4408.0. "They went on strike.....(dry only)" by BOOVX2::MANDILE () Fri Feb 22 1991 08:49

    "O.K., mom.....we put up with the Metamucil being added
    to our food, BUT, we are not going to eat it with that
    yucky yeast stuff in it. If you keep it up, we will stop
    eating, period, and you will be throwing good food out".

    So much for adding Brewers Yeast w/garlic to their food (sigh)

    The good news is, everyone checked out as being in excellent
    health last night at the annual check-up/vaccination vet visit.

    Oh well, I'm not going to eat it, either, so it looks like I
    pass it along to mom for the dog! :-)

    Lisa, I couldn't figure it out either, but after reading it again it
    seems as though she was adding the brewers yeast with garlic to the cat
    food as a means to repel fleas.

    You might try a product called HOP-OFF. It contains the yeast and
    garlic in a liquid form. My guys all seem to tolerate it, in fact
    when I ran out once they wouldn't eat! It comes in fish and meat
    flavor. ( I use the meat) I get mine at Food For Pets in Amherst NH
    and have also seen it at health food stores. (the A Market in
    Manchester NH) I can't say that it really works on the flea problem
    but it does do a nice job on their coats.

4408.4Flea WipesSOLVIT::IVESFri Feb 22 1991 11:5221
    I am glad to be able to write in this note about a flea product
    I just tried. FLEA WIPE. I bought if from R.C. Steele. Ming
    is constantly licking herself to the point she has almost no ruff
    left. She has little scabs at the base of her tail and under her
    chin and chest area. The vet said it was from fleas. Well she doesn't
    have a flea on her.

    I used the flea wipe on Ming and she stopped licking immediately
    (probably because of the smell and she was wet) but by the next
    evening when I had time to check her all the pumps were gone and
    she isn't licking anymore.

    The flea wipes were quite inexpensive 8 or so for $4.00. I got
    two boxes while I was at it.

    Now we shall see when the flea season comes. I am happy with
    the results now even if we don't get any further benefits.

    Has anyone else used these. (I frankly didn't expect much)

    I use the Hop-Off too. It's much easier and nicer the the dry
    products.

    My cats seem to like it, even Lightning (alias Miss Finicky).

    I would like to try the wipes. I am forever petting them anyway so
    I might as well put that time to constructive use.

4408.6Clarification......BOOVX1::MANDILEFri Feb 22 1991 13:125
Re .2 - you are correct!

    They wouldn't touch the food as long as it was in
    it. To tell the truth, I thought it smelled pretty
    bad, too.
4408.7Try Mixing w/CannedHDLITE::SCOTTMon Feb 25 1991 12:075
    Did you mix it with the dry or moist food? If the answer is dry,
    I'd try mixing it with 9-Lives or something. My kitties will "munch
    it down" that way!

    I heard something interesting at the Bristol show about mixing
    dry and canned. From the man selling Biljac & Lick your chops.
    He said that mixing dry and canned, or wetting dry food interfears
    with the digestion.

    What he said, and it makes sense, is that when the cat eats dry
    alone it absorbs moisture from the cat's saliva which contains
    enzymes and starts the digestion immediately. When you mix the
    dry with canned, it absorbs moisture from the water in the canned
    food rather than the saliva. Its fine to have a bowl of dry next
    to a bowl of canned, just don't mix them together.

4408.9Specially formulated dry food for mixingSUBURB::THOMASHThe Devon DumplingMon Mar 04 1991 09:3213
	We have dried food which is specifically for mixing with canned food.
	I only noticed it a month ago on the shelves, and my cats have turned
	their noses up at it!

	It's made by Whiskas - it doesn't look like the normal dried food, it's
	much thinner and smaller, and is more like the texture of hard biscuits
	(like Rich Tea Biscuits, not scones).

	Do you have any specific dried food which is formulated for mixing with
	canned food?

      I just read a phamplet this weekend by Science Diet and they
    have a product called Mixit (I think that's what the name is??)
    that is used for that purpose.

    I had never heard that you should not mix dry with wet...but this
    pamphlet stated you can for dogs...but you shouldn't for cats.
