4405.0. "Wanted - Pet Carrier" by ISLNDS::BARR_L (Support Our Troops!) Thu Feb 21 1991 13:53

Does anyone know where I can buy/borrow a cardboard pet carrier
so I can take Snowball to the vets on Saturday?

Answers via VAXmail would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Some of the shelters sell them. At least I know the Nashua
one does. I would check dept. stores first as the pet
stores could get a little expensive.

Thanks for all the response. I was able to borrow a carrier from
a friend here at work. I will also be checking the department stores
to see if I can pick up an inexpensive carrier for future vet visits.

For future information, the Nashua Shelter, 24 Ferry Road, sells
cardboard carriers for $5. They are free, however, when you adopt a
    cat/kitten.

Also, you can usually pick up a good carrier at a cat show for
a really good price. We bought ours for $18, and I've seen it
advertised in pet stores and catalogs for $40+.

My My...I spent $40 for a good carrier. Of course I needed a carrier
in an emergency situation...so I didn't have time to shop around.

Oh well... with as many cats as I have...it's used on a regular basis.

Just got my lastest catalog from R.C. Steele and they have a new
line of carriers for dogs and cats. Come in great colors and
the small one (forget the measurements) sells for $11.00. They
are airline approved and come with live animal stickers. Of course
the more you buy the cheaper they get. Would be really great for
any breeder when they sell a cat. I think 6 or more was like
    $7 or $8.

They are look better than the ones I have seem at the shows. I
believe these are by Vari Kennel.

Maybe if a group of us got together we could pool our order and
get them at the lower price! Just an idea but I feel anything to
save a dollar ( after all..the $ you save could by your baby a new
    toy!)

I would be very interested in pooling an order for cat carriers. I
need two good ones. Also I would like to be able to order that catalog
for myself. Would you mind posting the address?

    Thanks,

Every couple of months or so, Caldor has a good sale on "Pet Taxis".
They come in four sizes and I think the prices start around $9. I have
bought several for eithe 12 or 14 dollars ea., depending on size. They
come with extra screws, water bowl that attaches to door for transport,
are airline approved and also have a live animal sticker and shipper
receiver, feeding instructions label. The best part is that they have
two little compartments that close on the top that you could put a
leash, papers, a treat or other info in. They are a pretty blue color
    too! Made by Doskocil.

I have a carrier for each of my cats. Just in case of fire or somesuch
happens. They would probably panic and bolt.

If anyone needs a carrier and can't get to a catshow or find one
at Caldor's let me know and I'll pick one up for you at the shows.
You will, however, have to get it from me somehow from either
    Braintree or MR03.

re: Cardboard carriers - I generally warn people against using
them for more than one trip. I had a friend who lost both her
cats when the bottom fell out of the cardboard carrier she was
using. She never recovered the cats.

Believe me, the cost of a plastic carrier is well worth it.

It's a good idea to periodically check the carrier fasteners (screws,
hinges whatever) on plastic and metal carriers. Especially if its
been used on an airline or somesuch where it migth get
    bounced around.

The cardboard ones are not very sturdy. You can use them a few times
if your'e lucky, but they get weak, and all my guys can easily push one
    open.
I would be interested in either pooling an order, or getting a
catalog if someone can post the address.

approved for Airline use? Someone has asked me to get them some

4405.16Try Spag's or BJ's (under $15)HDLITE::SCOTTMon Feb 25 1991 12:104
Spag's in Shrewsbury usually has a good deal on the plastic,
    medium-sized carriers...So does BJ's.

4405.17Another vendor...inexpensive Kennel Cabs, etc.RHODES::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Mon Feb 25 1991 12:4710
Summit (in New Jersey) has the lowest prices on some, but not
all supplies. (For example, Foster and Smith has lower prices
on coop cups...hard to keep track of all this!!!)

And for any order over $50 (not hard these days to run it up well
over $50...), there is NO CHARGE for shipping. And they are quick.

I'll post the phone number to call for a catalogue tomorrow.
(But they do not have an 800 number -- no free lunch after all,
    I guess.)

Check the addresses note, #666 for addresses and phone numbers of
catalog companies. Seems we have listed them all there in the past.

Nancy DC, when I was traveling with the cats a lot, I found that the
only requirements that the airlines have is that the carrier be made of
rigid plastic, and have some sort of absorbent material on the bottom.

Vari kenels and Kennel Cabs fit this description and so do most of the
knock offs of these two brands.

4405.19latch restrictions for carriers in baggageRHODES::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Mon Feb 25 1991 13:358
    re: .18

For baggage (as opposed to "carry on"), a requirement for carriers
is something like there be two latches, e.g., top and bottom. One
latch, that a clever cat or monkey could open, is not allowed.
The old Kennel Cabs had only one latch, and for about $4-5, there
now is an adaptor latch. The new Kennel Cabs now have a latch
like the Vari-Kennels, and both latch systems are approved.
4405.20WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityMon Feb 25 1991 14:2412
That is funny, the whole time that I was traveling, I was using the old
Kennel Cab version for cargo shipment and was never questioned about
the latch. They did tell me one time that I MUST have a towel or other
absorbent material in the bottom in case the cat should "leak" during
shipment. I always used a cat bed, but didn't realize I was adhering
to a rule until someone brought it up.

I don't even own a Vari-Kennel, unless you count the #500 that my dog
    uses as her den. :^)

Those cardboard carriers are useless....I used one to
pick up my Korats when they were kittens, and they had
it chewed to pieces and were running all over the car in
    less than 30 minutes.

They still chew cardboard boxes apart!

I HAVE extra KenilCab carriers: the smallest size, blue; and the
next smallest size, dusty rose. NEW. not even assembled yet.

I also have a few extra cardboard carriers, from Angell Mem.
from when I picked up an animal and forgot the carrier (or
the person who dropped off animal .ne. person who picked up,
etc.). They have been used once each (except for ones I put
my spraying stud males into when cleaning their rooms, but
    those are not-to-be-desired.

I will be happy to share these at cost (including shipping).
