I just have time for a quick summary from my deskside cat
reference :^}
In the US, no distinction is made between the four strains
of Rex cats (Devon, Cornish, Oregon and German), but all other
countries recognize them separately. Briefly:
"It has been determined that the Cornish, German and Oregon
Rex are similar in hair type. The Devon Rex has a different
type of hair and few whiskers. The Cornish and German Rex
are genetically the same.
And further:
"The coat on this cat is short, extremely soft, silky and
completely free of guard hairs. It is relatively dense; a
tight, uniform marcel wave, lying close to the body and
extending from the top of the head across the back, sides
and hips continuing to the tip of the tail characterizes
the Rex coat."
Gotta run!

| Holly Taylor has a Cornish Rex and she can explain the differences to
you.
When I had the opportunity to pet Sweetie at a show last month I was
very surprised at the softness of his coat. It is very, very silky.
It was so strange too, cause when you look at a Rex cat, you just
expect the coat to be coarse cause it's curly (or at least I did).

| There is a distinction between rex cats in the US. All have the
curly/wavy hair, but there is definitely a difference in the genetic
makeup of the cats. The genes that cause the rexing is different in
each breed.
Anyway, the main difference in the Cornish and Devon (the only two Rex
breeds recognized by CFA) is the body type. They both have the
curly/wavy coat. A Cornish Rex has a very long tubular body with long
slender legs and a whippy tail (this is my personal description, not to
the letter of the CFA standard). I consider them to be oriental in
body type. The Devon Rex is more pixie-ish. They have shorter,
stockier legs, and shorter bodies. The Devon Rexes remind me of Popeye
if you can believe that! The way their legs are so thick and seem so
muscular. Anyway, the body styles are very different.
I think that Rex cat fur is made up of a single coat. I *think* it is
undercoat only with no guard hairs, but I am unsure. Holly could
confirm or deny this.

| In looking through keywords for this conference, I happened to find this note.
A Cornish Rex has the very tight marcel waving of their coat. Honestly, it
looks like someone took a krimping iron to their coat. The coat is VERY very
soft, and on a good rex, even a blind person can tell there are curls to
the coat. They also have a wedge shaped head and sort of a roman type nose.
Their bodies are long and tubular, similar to the siamese. With a good
"tuck up" by the back legs. (meaning that the waist of the cat is smaller
than the chest.
A Devon Rex is completely different. Their coat is much less dense. Their
curls aren't nearly as tight. they just look like they've gotten a body perm
with a few kurls instead of a kinky curly perm like the cornish. Their heads
are completely different in shape. They're more like a modified wedge shape.
Kind of like an applehead siamese almost. Their bodies are much more "boxy".
More like a burmese than anything else.
