4392.0. "Foster Parents for Desert Stormers" by GLDOA::JAKUBOWSKI () Fri Feb 15 1991 14:09

    I heard an interesting spot on the TV last night. One of our Humane
    Society locations is matching up foster Pet Parents and pets in need of
    a temporary home while their owners are off serving in the war effort.
    The Foster Parents provide home, food, recreation and love. The owners
    agree to pay any shots and veternary costs needed. They just started
    the program and so far have a list of Foster parents greater than pets
    that needed the service.

    I'm from the Detroit suburban area and this encompasses about 50 square
    miles. Only one location is doing it, but it seemed like such a great
    idea, I wanted to share it with all of you. Some of the folks
    interviewed said they worried so much about putting the pets in the
    Humane society places because they doubted they would see them again.
    Now that's one less worry they will have.

    It's great to be able to offer support where you can.

    Regards,

4392.1Too attachable for me.REEF::MCGOWANRFri Feb 15 1991 14:314
    that's really great, but I'm afraid I couldn't that. I'd probably get
    too attached and not want to let go of the animal once the owners came
    back.

    There was a spot on some news program awhile back about a lot
    of animals that had to be taken to shelters because their
    owner were shipped out. My impression was that these babies were
    not going to be boarded for six months, a year, however long,
    but rather euthanized, as it was that kind of shelter. I assume
    the boarding costs for long term care are beyond many peoples means.
    I will censor out my opinion of the American government's lack of
    interest in a diplomatic solution.

4392.3MA program?HYEND::KTRAINQUEFri Feb 15 1991 15:208
    Does anyone know of a program like that in MA? I'd like to volunteer
    for one. I have a brother and a very close friend over there. Both of
    them left their pets behind. My sister-in-law has their cat, and my
    friend's mom luckily agreed to take his cat. I know others aren't so
    lucky. Any information on this program would be greatly appreciated.

    Re. .3:
    Try calling the MSPCA. The Humane Society in Nashua was just talking
    the other day about setting up a similar program. All we need now is a
    budget and some volunteers to get it rolling.....

    Another benefit to this foster program is that in the sad case where
    the soldier doesn't come back, the animal already has a home. The
    chances for permanent placement in the foster home are far better
    than if the cat was in a shelter.
