4365.0. "HOW TO DISCOURAGE DOOR SCRATCHER??" by CSG002::GREENOUGH () Fri Feb 08 1991 09:42

For the past couple of weeks, our 10 month old cat has taken up the habit of
coming to our bedroom door, at 4:30/5 ish, and scratching to get in. For a
while, if we just ignored him he'd quit. Now he keeps at it. I've tried
squirting him with a spray bottle, but now he knows enough to run away by
the time I get to the door, so I have to chase him if I want to get him...
I'm not in the mood for this at 4:30 AM!!!! He'll stay away for 10 or 15
mintues, and then try again. We do not want to leave the bedroom door open
and having him sleep in the bedroom is not an option. Does anyone have
any hints on dealing with this?

We had to give in!!!! Nothing we did would stop B.K.

I have several cats that do that. My solution was to keep up with the
spraying enough times for them to figure out what the spray bottle was,
then leave the spray bottle outside the bedroom door as a "sentry" to
guard the door. That worked for us.

The other thing that we did is that we left our dog sleep in the
hallway just outside the door. Any cat that wants to scratch the door
has to first be willing to put up with dog harrassment. :^) This
solution may not be practical if you don't have a dog.

At least yours are scratching at doors that are closed. I've got
one that is so looney that she scratches on doors that are standing
    wide open. Go figure...
