| I saw that epidsode too, and started to cry. It was so sad. It
brought back memories of when Kirby was sick at Tufts and I finally had
to tell the specialists to let him go peacefully. I reacted much the
same way Spitz's owner did, bawling on the phone uncontrollably.
Great segment, but hard to watch. I'm a real wimp when it comes to
these things.

Ditto! I was wonderingif anyone was going to
put anything in about this episode. I didn't have
the chance to myself.
I had been having a bad day to begin with so the tears
flowed freely for that. I felt so bad for Spitz's mom.
It was done very tastefully.
BTW - for those who may not have seen it, it was Angell
Memorial they were doing the piece on.

I didn't watch the show, but your replys reminded me of a show about
the Santa Barbara SPCA. The major focus was the number of animals that
had to be put to sleep due to over population. It showed how the
animals were put to sleep and how the assistants reacted to it. I
remember on instance where they had to put a mother and her puppies to
sleep. The assistants brought the mother in first keeping the puppies
out of the room because they didn't want the puppies to see -- they
injected her and disposed of the body and then they injected the
puppies. I cried through the whole show. These people who ran the
shelter had a lot of compasion and love for the animals that came
through their doors. I remember one assistants saying that they
provided the love that some of the animals never had.

| I cried too. It reminded me of my Lightning who had to be put to sleep
due to diabetes last year. Fluffy (black cat) remains. She too,
misses running around the house playing with Lightning. Now, she plays
with us once in a while. My daugther (6 y.o.) was so sympathetic to my
crying over the show, she brought me a glass of water and patted my
back and said, "Lightning's up in heaven now."

| It was very well done. In fact, Angell Memorial should add on
to it and make it at least a 1/2 hour show. Very educational
and tastefully done, a really good piece.
Angell Memorial Animal Hospital and the MSPCA are both
in the same bldg on Huntington Ave, BTW.

It's nice to know I wasn't the only one sitting at home crying my eyes
out over the piece. I have so far (thank heaven) never had to make
that awful decision, but watching that piece really brought it home how
much I love those annoying little furballs. Can't live without them!

4356.8 | My heart broke | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Thu Feb 07 1991 08:22 | 12 |
| My heart broke and tears were streaming but I think it hit me
hard because I did not truly believe the cat was going to be put
to sleep. If you watch 911 you'd notice that 99% of the time
there is a very happy ending...normally miricles happen. Well
that's what I expected. (I know come back to reality.)
But I do agree the segment was very tastefully done and it really
showed how the owners, vets and everyone at the hospital really
cared. That segment just brought back some sad memories.

4356.9 | In Remembrance to MAX | SSDEVO::VANDERWAALL | | Thu Feb 07 1991 08:53 | 14 |
| Yes, we watched the show too and so ironic that right after the show I
went outside looking for our 14 year old cat "Max". Usually he doesn't
stray very far anymore at his age. I decided to walk towards the main
road and saw him lying near the sidewalk motionless. I picked him up
and he was still warm but not breathing. I tried avery thing to revive
him but nothing happened. It was very hard for us and my wife is still
crying. I wanted to bury him in our back yard, but the ground is still
very frozen so I decided to let the humane society take care of the
rest. It was very hard to believe that after a year moving to the city
and letting him outside for one hour every night he would take that
last leap across the street.
RIP Max,
from Bonkers, Crystal and Champ.

| My wife and I just wanted to say Thanks to all your feline noters for
your comforting support and thoughts. Bonkers, our other cat will miss
him the most now that Max isn't around chasing her all over the house.
I guess we will have to find another playmate for her when the time is
right.

| I too watched 911. I never miss it. Anyway I started to cry as soon
as I saw the gentleman staying with the cat that was hit. When they
did put the cat to sleep I turned at looked at my very asleep Tabby and
said I love you......
A very happy mom,

| I watched it too, and thought it was excellant! My husband liked it
especially and compared the treatment and the way all was handled to
when Stinky was sick. Needless to say he was very impressed and felt
that we have a topnotch vet hospital in the same mold as AM.

| Did anyone catch the show Rescue 911 last night? The last segment
featured a duck in Canada that had gotten a six pack plastic thingie
wrapped around it's neck, and the heroic efforts of the townsfolk to
catch him and save his life. It took about 18 days, but finally a pro
was able to snare him with a net and cut the plastic off his neck.
Sniff!! It was really sad, but so touching the way everyone pulled
together to save this duck. The entire rescue effort, from day 1 to
day 18, was broadcast on their local newstation.

| I caught the show and loved the way everyone pulled together
to help the poor little duck. That little guy was pretty smart..
he really outsmarted many humans.
I'm so happy there was a very happy ending for Ed, the duck!

| I loved that segment! Ed the Duck is quite a guy. I had to laugh
at all the people he tricked. Very smart Quacker for sure. How
about the man that broke his leg rescueing Ed. What a guy. They
should have measured the water depth a little better. I love animal
stories and I think they should keep doing them. What a good show!

of those plastic sixpack rings...I always cut them up

RE: 23
YES! Always, Always cut these things to pieces before throwing them
out; even if your rubbish is in a plastic bag. You don't know what
happens to it once it leaves your house (bags break).
I think companies should find a more environmentally friendly way of binding
products together. Here in the UK many drinks companies bind their
bottles/cans together using medium weight recyclable cardboard wrapped all
the way around the products (with ends open). I think this is much more
responsible. Anything else is just environmental hooliganism!
