| If it's not normal for him to do this, I would take him into
the vet, rather than spend a few days worrying. It could
just be a hairball, but if he has a cold or something, he'll
be more comfortable being treated earlier. Especially
since he is a mature pussycat. Perhaps you could
phone your vet's office and ask what they recommend you do.

| I agree with Karen, it is not normal for a cat to cough. Take him to
the vet for a checkup right away. You will both feel better once you
know what it causing it.

4345.3 | Maybe it's .... | CACT27::PENINGER | | Wed Jan 30 1991 14:29 | 10 |
| I have been reading the other notes regarding coughing cats, and they
all seem to have asthma or it is just due to the winter months. I hope
that is all it is and it is cureable. Ralf is a seal point siamese
and has never coughed before, and according to the other notes the
majority of the cats were siamese - maybe it is more common amongst
siamese? Our house is very dry and our cat litter is not dust free
(someone mentioned this might attribute to the coughing) so maybe I
should buy some dust free litter and buy a couple of vaporizers?

this is nothing serious. Thanks for responding so fast.

There are alot of colds going around....the treatment

| Please let us know what the vet says. Probably you are
right and it is nothing serious, but it will be a relief to
know for sure.

| It could be an upper respiratory infection. The humane society in
Nashua is seeing a lot of this these days. Good luck.

| re: .-1
I second the upper respiratory possibility; the cats I mentioned in
note #4339 who have been the worst have been coughing. ABSOLUTELY take
the cat to the vets.

| Best case scenario on the coughing: a hairball or URI
Worst case scenario on the coughing: could indicate some type of heart
problem.

4345.10 | A Sad Case of a Coughing Cat | PERFCT::WILCOX | | Fri Feb 01 1991 16:37 | 6 |
| My daughter's 1 1/2 year old cat was coughing last weekend, and she
thought it was hairballs. I didn't think hairballs would cause the cat
to keep coughing and suggested she call the vet. By Sunday night, the
cat was so lethargic, she called the vet and made an emergency trip in.
It turned out the cat had heart disease and had to be put to sleep on
Monday. It was a real shock to her as it happened so suddenly.

| Re.10:
I am sorry about your daughter's cat. Unfortunately a cough is one of
the first symptoms of heart disease. By the time the cat gets that
sick, it is usually too late. I have lost a cat to heart disease too
and I know how hard it is. It is just so unexpected. One day they are
fine, the next they are fatally ill. Send your daughter my
condolences.

| Well, I've made an appointment for today at 3:30. I have been praying
that it is nothing serious. I will keep everyone posted, hopefully
with good news!
Re: 4345.10 - My heart goes out to your daughter. I lost my first cat
when I was about 12, he was hit by a school bus driver, I cried for
days. My mom got Ralf for me right away, same coloring same breed and
it did wonders!

| Re: 13 - Best of luck today. Keep us posted. Also, thanks for all
the responses to my daughter losing her cat (4345.10). I will pass all
the good wishes on to her, and I know it will help. She got a new
kitten that night. She said it won't take Stan's place but will help.
She was with the cat when they put her to sleep and said she was glad
she had done that. She didn't think she'd be able to but when she saw
that she didn't suffer at all, it really made her feel good she had
been there.
Thanks again for the support.

| Hi all,
All is well on the home front! Ralf has a mild form of bronchitis.
The doc gave him some cortisone pills and he said everything should be
ok in about a week and to slowly ween him off the medication.
Thank goodness it wasn't anything more severe!
Thanks guys!
