4321.0. "A Happier Stray..." by CHIPS::URBAN () Mon Jan 21 1991 11:36

Just wanted to update everyone on the the stray calico cat I caught
(with Nancy DC's trap--thanx!!) a couple of months ago. Well, at first
she was really mad and just stayed under my friend's bed. So, he had
to put food and make a short litter box for her to use. But, she ate
and she used the litter box. Then, a couple of weeks later he started
moving the food closer to the edge of the bed, and that was fine too.
Well, she finally was up to the point of coming out from under the bed
and eating and using her litter box, but only when he wasn't in the
room. So, anyway, this past week she has really been doing some
"kitty" things like pushing things off his bureaus and taking the odor
eaters of his shoes and playing with a shoelace, but she still wouldn't
come near him. Well, I'm so happy because Michael called me Saturday
morning to tell me that Dez was sleeping next to him on his bed when he
woke up. She still won't hand around with him or let him touch her,
but she's not afraid to be out from under the bed to eat or use her box
now. Isn't this great!! I'm hoping she'll come around to let him pet
her...he does try sometimes... Anyway, he wants to let her into the
bigger part of the house. Think this is okay at this point, or should
he wait until she's gotten to know him better. He has a roommate, I
    thought she might be afraid...

Does the roommate know not to let Dez outside? If so, it's
worth a try, as long as Dez can get back to what she views as a place
of safety. It will probably take her awhile to get used to the
    bigger area.

I don't think it would hurt if your friend kept the door open
when he was home, so Dez could come out to the other parts of
the house if he wanted too. My guess is that he would walk out
of the room...but then run back into his comfort zone. (Under the
bed) It might take awhile to accomplish this.

It sounds like your friend has made some progress..but still has
a way to go. Love and patients is the key!!

Sounds like he's making exellent progress with his little stray!

I agree with Sandy that it would be ok to let the cat out when
your friend is home to supervise but not when he's out. That
    will come later.

4321.5She's getting more spaceCHIPS::URBANTue Jan 22 1991 13:3110
Michael stayed home today, so he's decided to keep the door open to his
room and see what happens. He's shutting all other doors in the house,
so she can only go into the Kitchen/Living Room area, which is a pretty
large space. I think she'll probably go hide under the couch in the
Living Room...she's still timid. But, Michael's going to lure her back
into the bedroom tonight. Oh yeah, his roomate knows not to let the
cat out...he's not much of an animal person...he'll just stay away from
her I think. I'll let you know what happens...

When I caught my stray he hid in my room for weeks. I have a platform
waterbed and he would hide behind that. The waterbed was in a corner
so he had to walls to walk along. He was very friendly to me if I was
in my room alone. If someone else came in he would hide. He won't go
out of my room even if the door was open. I got him in October and he
didn't go into the other bedrooms until January. By February he would
go downstairs but only for a few minutes and only if I was down there.
I moved and now he has run of the place - boy does he have run of the
place. He has his own house (made out of a cardboard box - which he is
in the processing of destroying), his own toys, his own blanket..... I
would only let DEZ out when Michael is home for the next couple of
weeks and see how DEZ does....

She sounds like she wants to be loved just takes some time!!

Never give up working with a rescued kitty. Advances continue to come,
even after a VERY extended period of time. Midnight was a rescue, a
sick, starving little 6-month old, about the size of a 3-month kitten.
With a lot of care, and a good vet she survived, and after about two
months, was even willing to leave the vicinity of the food dish for
more than a half hour ;-)

Over time, she became friendlier, and would come and sit with us, and
eventually on laps, but only on HER terms. She would *never* allow
us to pick her up and hold her, under any circumstances - vet trips
were, ahh, interesting. However, a couple months ago, she was
standing looking up at me, as if she wanted up. Well, the old scars
have faded :-}, so I picked her up... She started to purr! Now I
can hold her frequently, and and she loves it - she even drools! I am
still amamzed, I long since gave hoping for this!

You see, this week marks 15 YEARS since we rescued her!!!!! There is
always hope for further progress... Thanks, Midnight, and may we
    have many more happy years...
