4320.0. "trining to help you look after your moggies" by SUBURB::THOMASH (The Devon Dumpling) Mon Jan 21 1991 07:51

I picked up an article over the weekend which provides courses for
people who are considering having pets.

The courses are run by the Berkshire College of Agriculture, and are
taken from part of the syllabus given to veterinary nurses.

Each "course" is 2 hours long, and cost 5 (approx $9)

	1. Moggie or Pedigree? Choosing your cat.

	2. Nutrition and diet for your cat.

	3. Caring for your new kitten.

There are also similar courses for perspective dog-owners, with an
additional "The theory of basic training for your puppy".

(and also one on "introduction to ferrets and ferret-keeping!)

There will be combined courses in the summer - for parents and their
children - with additional courses on looking after small animals such
as gerbils and hampsters, tortioses and terrapins - which are very
	popular in the UK.

I think it's great that these courses are being held, the fact that they
are already part of the veterinary nurse training means that there are
no "set-up" charges, and so can be done at a reasonable cost to the
	public.

I'm thinking of going to the one on "nutrition and diet for your cat"
to see if I can learn anything more.

Are there similar courses in the US, do you have agricultural Colleges
	that train vetinary nurses?

The one I'm interested in is 26th Feb, I'll let you know how it goes.

Here in the states, we have college courses that train folks to be
Animal Health Technicians (veterinary nurses). After taking the
courses of study, the AHT's must pass a board exam in order to become
licensed. I have often thought of taking these courses, for my own
knowledge rather than working as an AHT. The closest college that
teaches these courses is in Los Altos Hills I think. I have heard that
there is another on Salinas, but haven't confirmed that yet.

I think it is great that they are offering those courses to the public.
I hope that they are successful and that folks attend.

    Jo,
For what its worth, I've seen these courses offered through
a correspondence college. I can't remember which one tho.

I took the base-note info from an article in the Reading Chronicle.

The College number is Littlewick Green (0628) 824444.

They seem to have a few problems with the phones, I have left my name
and address, and they say they will send me a leaflet. When(if?) it
arrives, I'll pop around and see you.
