| Well, I don't have any reassurances, but Mao whom we think has some
siamese in her background, also yells at times. Often for no reason
that I can see ;-) I'm very glad that those occasions are rather
infrequent. What a racket!!

4309.2 | Some are just noisy.... | DELNI::JMCDONOUGH | | Tue Jan 15 1991 09:42 | 12 |
| I wish I could give you some positive input, but it's a fact that
SOME--not all by any means--but some Siamese are very noisy critters.
My "Rama-Thai" was a VERY noisy boy.. His favorite thing was to go from
room-to-room at 3:00 in the morning screaming at every window.... I
still don't know how we were able to cope with him, but he was SUCH a
darned little Sweetie all of the time... I used to sit with my legs
stretched out and my feet crossed on a hassock....he'd jup up on my
legs, stretch out fuul length with his head at my ankles and his back
feet would be at my thighs...and he'd simply go to sleep... You coul
hear him purr from about 50 feet....

| Hey, things could be worse! I have a 2 1/2 year old Ragdoll cat that
yells too. Ragdolls are supposed to be a quiet breed but someone
forgot to tell that to Kelsey! His voice is so loud he sometimes loses
it from screeching too much.
The only time we reprimand him is if he is yelling for a reason he
knows he's not supposed to (like go for a walk when mom isn't in the
mood to take him or screeches for me to get up at 6:00 in the
morning and feed him). Then, he gets squirted with the squirt gun. If
he's simply talking to me (like when I walk in the door from work and
he's happy to see me), I can put up with his loud mouth.
I don't believe for a minute that the Ragdolls have no Siamese in their
blood. Either that, or Kelsey is the exception to the rule.

| Roberta,
Don't worry, I have an exotic that's probably louder than any siamese.
Someone forgot to tell Bridgy that she's not suppose to talk!

| The siamese part of the Himalayan breed really comes out in
Mr. Miyagi. Usually he just talks but let me get into the shower
and he screams bloody murder. I keep the bathroom door open ajar
so he can come in and out but he howls anyway. The first time
my husband heard it he thought I had caught Mr. Miyagi's paw in
the door and he was stuck there. Tim came running up the stairs
and there was Mr. Miyagi sitting on the floor in the middle of
the bathroom screaming.
Ming has a purr like crazy but doesn't talk at all. I think the
only time I have heard a peep out of her is when we take her with
us in the car and she is in her carrier or she accidently gets
stepped on.
Mocha is like Kelsey, wants to go out and screams his lungs out
till he is outside.
Funny furfaces....

4309.6 | come on out..I know you're hiding... | TYGON::WILDE | illegal possession of a GNU | Tue Jan 15 1991 13:56 | 15 |
| In my experience, the cat should simmer down somewhat as he gets adjusted to
the new living arrangements. He is probably lonely for other cats and will
learn that they aren't "just hiding" from him in time. Mandycat hollered at
the top of her lungs constantly for the first week she was with us...and we
HAVE other cats, but they weren't HER cats and she was confused....she seemed
to keep calling for her litter mates to "come out". When you have no other
cats to distract him, you must expect it to take a little longer for your guy
to settle down. Lots of play time and conversation with him is the best
treatment at this time.
Being an oriental, however, the level of noise at which he considers himself
"settled down" may not be the most desirable level of noise control in your
opinion....8^}
Love them noisy, pretty, obstinant orientals....

| Well, I'll tell my husband to just give him time and hope that one of
them adjusts. I know that Mishy will probably always yell, I just hope
he'll figure out that it is undesirable behavior when my husband is
home and tone it down a little.
He is a truly sweet and lovable cat and I want things to work out
between the three of us. I'm so happy having a kitty again after all
these years.
Thanks for the commiserations!

| Little Bit is a tabby, but i swear he has Siamese blood somewhere.
He howled a lot at first until I realized he was trying to
tell me that he was hungry -- Sweetie (aka Mr. Vacumn Cleaner)
has cleaning LB's plate. LB is of the nibble and leave persuasion.
Now LB gets an extra helping later in the evening when the others
are asleep and peace reigns. Well....peace reigns until he decides
I should get up and play with him....

4309.9 | Flo' shouts too ... | XNOGOV::LISA | Give quiche a chance | Wed Jan 16 1991 04:56 | 10 |
| Florence our Oriental shouts a lot too! Also she purrs so loud that it
makes her cough! She doesn't shout for any particular reason, she's
just so happy that she shouts I think! Usually we get some peace by
screwing up a piece of paper and throwing it, she fetches it, drops it
at out feet, we throw it etc.... It's dull, but it keeps her happy!
Don't let it get to you - you'd miss the noise if it went away!!

4309.10 | Complaints, complaints | TSDOC::BERRY | | Thu Jan 17 1991 20:04 | 19 |
| Hi,
When I moved into a city apartment a few years ago, my only cat then, screamed
bloody murder. He is half siamese and had been living in a house with another
cat. Previous to that he lived with a dog whom he loved to chase. Tober was
furious at the change to a single apt. It also didn't seem to matter much that
I paid extra attention to him, he let me know in spades that he did not like it
there. He calmed down after a month but still was unhappy until I adopted a
Maine Coon for him to play with. They became best buddys and Tober shut up.
My third cat added to the pack is a full siamese. She complains loudly whenever
she is picked up or put down. She loves to be held or sit on your lap, but she
hates flight. Given a little time, your cat will probably settle in. You may
need to get a companion however.
Good luck,
Priscilla

4309.11 | Things may be improving | MRKTNG::MAXIMOUS | | Fri Jan 18 1991 07:57 | 20 |
| Well, as of tomorrow Mish-Mish will be with me for two weeks.
Either his yelling has toned down a very little bit, or I am becoming
more immune. I think one thing that has helped is I am no longer
hiding his tinsel tease stick when we are not playing with him. I had
been putting it away so he couldn't get at it and I think he would get
really mad looking for it.
He has not woken us in the middle of the night for 3 nights now, so
that is good news.
He is extremely loving and gives equal time to my husband and me. As
long as he lets us sleep at night and shuts up when told to, things are
going to be fine. I think that the longer he is here, the angry yells
should go away. I'm sure he is still mad at being rousted from his
happy home with all those other kitties to play with.
Thanks for all your support.
