For those of you who may not get Cat Fancy Magazine or haven't read it
yet, one of the interesting news briefs on page 14 of Feb. issue:
Japanese cat lovers will offer prayers for the longevity of
their pets and honor special cats when they celebrate Cat Day
on February 22. The date 2-22 is pronounced "ni-ni-ni" in
Japanese, which is similar to the Japanese translation of
"meow-meow-meow".

This is a fairly new holiday in Japan. See note 1129.

The Japanese also have shrines for cats where you purchase a cat statue
in memory of a loved but departed cat (rather as you purchase a votive
candle in a Catholic church) and place it on the alter-like table.
The cat is plain white china sitting upright and waving goodbye with
one front paw. It's a way of saying goodbye to a lost kitty.
A very civilized idea and one that must give much comfort to the
bereaved owners.
