4243.0. "Burmese and Himalayans" by CLT::KOBAL::CJOHNSON (Eat, drink and see Jerry!) Tue Dec 11 1990 11:07

I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference between a
    Himalayan and a Burmese.
Isn't one long haired and one short haired? They both have blue
eyes right? Also, when they talk about "points", what does that
mean (coloring)? If the cat has brown coloring does that mean a
    "point"?

Do both breeds act the same and how are their personalities?

    Thanks for your help!
    Chris

Some quick similarities and differences (from the Encyclopedia
	of American Cat Breeds):

Both are related to, and have been developed from the Siamese.
Both are considered to be man-made breeds.

The Burmese is a solid brown (or champagne) colored, short-
haired cat with gold eyes. The Himalayan is a long-haired,
	blue-eyed, 'pointed' cat.

The term 'point' refers to the extremities, i.e., nose, ears,
tail, feet . . . when they are colored darker than the body of
	the cat.

I think that the Burmese is more like the Siamese in character,
while the Himmie is more like a Persian.

Wow, the Himalayan sounds really nice. WEll, they both do, I love
all cats. Does anyone know a breeder for Himalayans? Andy how
much would a "pet quality" Himmie kitty go for with papers?

    Thanks

    Chris,

I think you may be confusing a Birman with a Burmese. Birmans look
more similar to Himmies than Burmese do. Birmans are semi-longhaired
cats with blue eyes and white feet. Their head type and body type is
much different than a Himmy's is. They have a modified wedge shaped
head (kind of a triangle that is wider than a wedge), a roman nose
(complete with bump and low set nostrils), and long but stocky body.
They have points like a siamese and come in seal point, blue point,
chocolate point and lilac point (although the latter are very rarely
    sold as pets).

Pet quality Birmans sell for anywhere between $300-$450.

Himmies are related to Persians (and in some organizations are
considered a color class of Persians) so they have the persian
head and body type and that beautiful full coat.

Burmese have a different body type. Shiny, shiny short hair that
lies close to the body and VERY muscular bodies with short muzzles
and BIG eyes. Truely a beautiful cat.

The best way to tell the difference is to come to a cat show and
see them for yourself. There's one in Boston (Dorchester) the weekend
of the 29th and one in Mansfield, Ma in January.

Chris where are you located? I have been approached by a breeder
to help find a home for a Himmie that needs to be placed.

Barbara, & her 3M's Mocha, Ming, and Miyagi. (the last two are
                       Himmies.)

My Chocolate point Himmie just had kittens this morning. She had had
two by the time I left for work, and she looked like she was getting
ready to have at least 1 more. She is a beautiful cat, all white
with the chocolate colored points and BIG blue eyes.
She was breed with another Chocolate point. She is a very affectionate
cat, loves children and lots of attention. Females go for $250 - $350
and males go for $175 - $275 generally. They can't leave the mother
    for another 8 weeks though.

Boy, when Halie had her kittens there was no way I was leaving her
side :-) Of course she had 7 kittens and needed a little help by
the time numbers 6 & 7 arrived. I'm lucky that I have a job that
    would allow me that flexibility.

Good luck with your babies. :-) and congrats to you and the
    mom.

    re. .7

Believe me I didn't want to leave Suger and her kittens. I stayed
until 10:30 in the morning (didn't get into work till 11:00).
So, you can just image how guilty I felt when I got home and the
third one to be born (the one I didn't wait for) was dead. She
only had the three. The first two are doing really well. I don't
know if I could have helped the third one or not.

The two kittens are so cute, I can hardly stop looking at them. I
can't wait till they up and romping around!

I'm sorry about the third kitten and glad that you have two healthy
    beautiful babies.

At least you won't have to worry about them getting enough to
eat. When Halie had seven we had to do some hand feeding.
