4171.0. "So, how was YOUR week?? " by TPMARY::TAMIR (ACMS design while-u-wait) Tue Nov 13 1990 10:53

Well, last week started off like any other week...5 cats inside, 4 cats outside.
Biff was recovering from his surgery and was just getting over the flu. So,
Thursday morning, I noticed that one of my feral baby's had a bad respiratory
infection. Since I've gotten him to the point where he could be held, I
decided to snag him and drag him kicking and screaming to the vet. This is
the 'player to be named later' you may have read about. Meet Mikey....

Mikey is a baby brother to Robin and Biff, from the same very fertile parents.
While at the vet, we found fleas, ear mites, roundworms, a respiratory
infection, two ingrown claws (he's double pawed, just like MomCat and Robin),
and a few miscellaneous other maladies. So, we came home with flea powder
and spray, numerous ear mite medications, Clavamox for him and for Honey,
vitamins, worming stuff, and orders to keep him away from the rest of the
kitties for one month. Mike spent the night crying his eyes out and when I
went in to comfort him, Biff managed to get in, too. I thought, as I crawled
back into bed at 2 in the morning, that he had settled down quickly. In the
morning, I discovered Mike and Biff sleeping together on the sofa in Mike's
room. Swell.....so that's how Friday started. And Honey is non-to-pleased
to be taking Clavamox...

When I got home Friday afternoon, I went upstairs to see what was happening.
Honey took one look at me and started foaming at the mouth and was hissing
and spitting. He bit my hand when I tried to pet him. I've never been so
scared. I called the vet right away and she said to rush him in and that
hopefully it wasn't distemper. He did OK waiting for the vet, but as soon
as we tried to examine him, he started foaming and spitting again. He went
absolutely nuts. He would allow no one to touch his face, mouth, or ears.
The vet asked if it were possible that he got into some sewing needles or
pins. My heart sank as I remembered leaving a couple pins stuck into the
ironing board that morning, along with a needle and thread. I started crying
calling myself the worse mother on the planet, knowing that it was very likely
that my #1 baby had gotten into the needles. My ever-patient vet had to
sedate Honey to x-ray him to see if he had swallowed the pins and where they
might be. Two hours later, she called and said there were no pins, no sores,
no nothing. Could this possibly be a behavioral problem?? Well, if you want
the answer to that one, go near Honey with an eyedropper and watch the reaction.
$175.00 later, I've got a cat with an attitude....and a nice, juicy sneeze...

Saturday started out promising. I left the house to do errands. Mikey was
left in his room to spend the day. When I got back Saturday night, there
was Mikey in the kitchen with Chauncey nibbling a little SD Light. Biff
had sprung Mikey from prison and now all of my cats have been exposed to
fleas, ear mites, worms, and a respiratory infection.

Welcome, little Mikey...you sure brightened up a dull week.....

Mary

Your week sounded like most people experience within a years time
frame. Well thank god that week is over....and hopefully this one
    will be better.

Mikey sounds like a little handful..and I hope all your other babies
are okay....even the one with the attitude problem. Can you imagine!

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time of it Mary. I remember
when all 5 (when we had 5) of my guys caught a URI and it was rounds of
cefatabs for everyone! I thought they would never get better. It is
tougher when they are younger and more suseptible. Good for you for
helping little Mikey, who surely would have perished in the cold
weather we've been having. You deserve 5 gold stars!!

I'm sure they all won't be severely affected... some only get mild
cases while others get full-blown symptoms. At least you've caught it
early and can begin meds for everything before they really become a
    problem.

    Hang in there!!

mary, mary, mary. What can I say, except I send about 20,000 tons
of empathy your way! Some days, I dunno, you could take and wap
'em aside of the tail! and then there are the good days!
Hang in there tookie, I've got twenty cents on ya!

Good gosh, Mary! And I thought *I* had problems at home :^} It
looks like your sense of humor will carry you through this - some-
thing one definitely must have to be a cat lover anyway. I woke
up during the night and found that my pillow had been commandeered
right out from under me. I growled assertively and two cats agreed
	to share it with me :^}

Mikey has an eating disorder. Seems dry food must be dug out of the bowl,
leaving not one morsel behind, then it must be batted all over the room
before it can be eaten. Thank God he doesn't do it to his canned food. Of
course, Biff thinks this is great fun and joins in. Lordy, what's a Mom
to do...

Honey seems to have gotten over the foaming-at-the-mouth stage. He feels
very smug that his won this battle. The score is now Honey 6453676323, Mom 1.

Hmm. Mikey must have been talking with Lil. She uses her paw, takes
a piece out drops it on the floor. When she is done, there is a pile
of food on the floor, but I never know how much made it to her mouth.
ugh - piglet! Gee, I didn't know that was an eating disorder.

Pussycat used to own my pillow. If I was very lucky I got access to
about 1 square inch on a corner. Then my Mom bought him (or maybe
me...) a pillow all my own for Christmas.

Well, two of my folds have developed a Drinking disorder! Seems we
don't drink the water in the dish, we scoop and splash it around!
Funny thing is I never saw them doing this until AFTER my conversation
with Nancie Belser where she asked me if my folds play in the water!
    How could they know?!

He must have felt sorry for you to have let you win a battle!

Becky had a similar 'problem'. She could not *bear* to lower her face
to the bowl. All food had to be lifted to her face using one of her 'catcher's
mitts'. Needless to say, she used to drop a lot.

Chloe takes a piece out of the bowl with her paw, gets
said paw about 2" from her face and then "tosses" it into
her mouth. It's the funniest thing! She doesn't miss too
    	often though.
