I have been through something similar. I can give you one hint that
might make it easier to feed Michaela. Mix her daily dose of Nutrical
with about 3 tablespoons of strained babyfood, and a couple of
tablespoons of water. You can then feed her this mixture with a
syringe all at once, several times a day. The unused portion from the
first meal can be refridgerated and then warmed in the microwave for
the next meal. You can feed her as many times as you like, just be
sure to use the whole mixture each day since it contains her daily
ration of Nutrical.
Hang in there. I have been through times like this and it isn't easy.
You might also ask the vet to send you home with a bag of ringers and
some syringes so that you can keep her hydrated yourself. When Laci
was sick, I gave her 100cc's of ringers twice a day in addition to her
Nutrical/babyfood mixture. It kept her going for three weeks, until
she started eating on her own again.

| We should get the results of the bloodwork back today. God, I hope
that this isn't something EXTREMELY serious! She still doesn't look
good. I came home last night and she was just laying in the same spot
that I left her in this morning. She's still quite listless.
I did try your concoction last night and this morning Jo. It worked
MUCH better! Thanks!! She still doesn't like it too much and squirms
like there's no tomorrow, but we are getting it down her. This is
going to be rough!!

| I just got off of the phone with Dr. Mulcahey. The tests just came
back. She definitely has an inflamed liver. She's got hepetitis.
Everything else is all right. Blood sugar level is fine, kidneys are
functioning properly. Just her liver.
I've got to bring her in tonight and they want to keep her for a few
days. To monitor her and to treat her. They are going to give her
something to try and bring the inflamation down. Dr. Mulcahey said
that if she responds to this treatment, then she may be just fine. But
if she doesn't, then we may have to look into a liver biobsy or
something.
This is scaring me more and more.

| Well, I dropped her off at the vet last night. It almost broke my
heart to leave her there. But she wasn't doing very well at all.
Dr. Mulcahey explained a little bit more about her hepetitis. She said
that her white blood cell count was normal, her red blood cell count
was normal, but her enzymes were up EXTREMELY high. The normal enzyme
count is around 100 and her's was up over 1000!! That scared me a bit.
She explained that if it was a normal infection hepetitis, her white
bloodcell count would be sky high too. This is a bit more serious.
She called it Chronic Idio(something) hepetitis. It's a bit more
difficult to cure than just the infection. She's going to put her on
prentizone and try and get the inflamation down. If she doesn't react
to that, then she will have to have a liver biopsy. They won't have to
open her up to do it. They can now do an ultrasound and get a biopsy
that way.
One thing that she said did make me feel a bit better. There is a
third kind of hepetitis that is almost incurable. It's a fatty liver.
She said that she doesn't THINK that's what Micki has. She said that
there usually isn't the sudden onset or the high enzymes. At least
she's got that in her favor.
Also, I talked to her breeder last night. First, this is not a
heretitary disease at all. But Persians are more prone to it than
other cats (aren't they more prone to EVERYTHING?). Her breeder said
that three of her cats had it about four years ago. The same kind and
they pulled through it with flying colors. They responded well to the
treatment and one of them has actually had two litters of kittens since
then. That made me feel a little bit better.
Thank you all for the well wishes for Michaela. She's still not in the
clear yet. Dr. Mulcahey says that we won't be able to pick her up
before the weekend. If she responds to the treatment, we'll possibly
be able to pick her up on friday night. If not, then she's there for
the weekend at least.
I'm really missing my baby! And so are the other cats!

| The fatty liver disease is called something Lipidosis (just had it on
the tip of my tongue but now I can't remember the first word). My vet
has pulled one cat through that had this. It was a long, hard road
back for that cat, but he did make it. Keep your chin up. I know what
you are going through.

| Good news! I think your well wishes and kitty prayers are working!!
I went to see her last night. They have like a "spare" office where
they brought her out and we just sat there with her. Kind of "kitty
visiting hours."
She seemed to be a bit more alert this time. I thought it might just
be my wishful thinking, but she did seem better to my mother too. The
vet said that she still hadn't eaten anything.
Then it occured to me! I asked them what they'd been trying to feed
her. They'd been trying to feed her wet cat food. She doesn't even
eat wet cat food when she's completely healthy! She only eats iams dry
or some of the semi-soft stuff. But she LOVES sliced turkey meat!
I went to the convenient store next door and got a couple of slices of
turkey meat. I brought it in to her and her ears perked up as soon as
she heard the deli bag rattling. We opened up and gave some to her.
She gobbled it RIGHT down!! YAHOO!! She ate!!! She ate a whole piece
of it! Needless to say, I was THRILLED!!
She's still not out of the dark yet, but at least this is a good sign!
Dr. Mulcahey had already left for the day, but I did tell her assistant
and Dr. Moss.

| I just talked to the vet's office this morning. She's eating MUCH
better today! She's enjoying her turkey. They've also given her
some dry food. She's not as keen on that, but she's eating it.
She is also much perkier too. the assistant said that she went to the
check in on her and Micki came up to the front of the cage and meowed.
She wanted OUT of there!!
Looks like she's taking well to the treatment! Hopefully I'll be able
to take her home tomorrow night!!
Thank you all SO much for the well wishes and prayers for Michaela. It
looks like the prayers are working!

| Went to the vets last night and talked to visited with Michaela again.
She's doing much better. she even played! I picked up a Q-tip and
moved it around. She kept trying to catch it. Dr. Mulcahey came in
and said that she couldn't believe the speedy recovery that Micki had.
We're calling her the "wonder cat". Dr. Mulcahey had still wanted to
keep her over the weekend but after Micki showed off to her by playing
and purring and headbutting my mother, she gave in. She kept looking
at her and saying, "Ok Micki! I get the hint! You feel better! Ok, I
give! You can go home tomorrow!!" (-:
So, we're bringing her home tonight! I can't tell you how happy I am
that she's all right. I honestly thought I was going to loose her. It
looks like all of your thoughts and prayers really worked! She's still
going to be on medication for the next six weeks (Amoxicilin and
Prentizone) but I can give her that at home.
My baby's coming home tonight! YAHOO!!!
Thank you everyone for all of your well wishes. That's one reason why
I love this file so much. I don't get into it as much as I used to
because of my work, but you really come through when someone needs you.

I am so pleased for you both. I didn't like to say anything until the
good nes - but I ahve been thinking off and praying for you both. My
little black baby Katy Kates died of this three years ago when she was
18 months old. She suddenly got so sick and within a week was dead -
it still makes me cry to think of the pain she was in. I now have two
more black babies (5 cats in total) and I love them dearly but still
miss my Katy - she helped me through quite a bad spell of the blues,
hardly left my side the whole time.
Anyway, enough of that, it makes me so happy that your Michaela is
getting better.

| D*MN I knew it was too good to be true!!
I just got off of the phone with Dr. Mulcahey. It seems that Micki was
fine this morning, but this afternoon she took a turn. She's been
listless again and she's started to run a fever again. Dr. Mulcahey
seems to think it's from the fluids and being soar from the injections,
but she can't explain the fever.
We're going to see her tonight to see if maybe we can snap her out of
it. Anyway, she's at least going to be spending another night at the
vets. It kind of concerns me that Dr. Mulcahey won't be there
tomorrow. She's got something going on that she can't get out of. Dr.
Moss will be taking care of her.
Keep those prayers coming! She needs them again!!

| Well, this is a note that I really didn't want to put in here.
When I went to see Michaela on Friday night, she looked even worse than
she did when I brought her in there. She couldn't even hold her head
up. Dr. Mulcahey had no idea as to what was wrong. She said that in
the morning at about 10:00 she was doing absolutely wonderful! One of
her assistants opened her cage to clean it and Micki jumped into arms!
At around 12:00 she didn't look right. She was back to what she was
when she got there. Very listless and uneasy.
As the hours went by, Michaela got much much worse. We think she had
hit rock bottom when we got there. Dr. Mulcahey talked to us about a
number of different things. Especially the possibility of FIP. After
we left, she took some x-rays and then called us with the results. She
had also thought that maybe Micki had a gall-stone but the x-rays
didn't show any. She saw that her liver wasn't quite as inflamed as it
was earlier. She couldn't really see anything wrong. She put her in
her bed and she went to sleep. Little did she know that she would not
wake again.
I got a call on Saturday morning from Dr. Mulcahey's assistant who told
me that Michaela had died some time in the middle of the night. I was
in hysterics. How could a cat who had SO much love in her and who
looked SO well on Thursday have died on Friday? This is something that
I can't understand! The hardest thing was going to tell my mother.
Micki was HER baby! All mom had to do was yell "Micki Micki Micki" and
Micki would come running! She slept on her side of my mother's bed
(yes, the ENTIRE side of the bed was hers!). Mom was absolutely
devastated.
Dr. Moss did an autopsy on Micki and couldn't find what had killed her.
There were two things that were unusual. her liver was QUITE tough!
Not tender like it should have been. Also, her heart was about 1/3 the
size it should have been which may have been the cause. They think
that possibly some of the poisin from her liver went to her heart and
she had a heart attack. I find it hard to believe that she had such a
small heard considering how much love was in it. She was a beautiful
kitty and loved everybody. Dr. Mulcahey said that even the dogs in the
hospital didn't bother her in the least bit!
Rest in peace my baby. It doesn't hurt anymore.

this sounds strangely like my poor cissy's last days. there were liver
problems, but they (five different vets) could never figure it out.
cissy eventually died of cardiac arrest during tests at the UGA vet
medicine facility.
our deepest sympathy to you and family...

| Oh Holly and Mom,
We both are extremely upset to hear the news! God deals us tough blows
sometimes that seem very unfair. It is comforting to know that she is
no longer in pain and is now in kitty heaven with lots of other
playmates. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the both of you. I can't
seem t find the words that would make you feel better. I don't even
know what to really say. So before one more person asks me why I'm so
upset I'm going to go. We love you and send BIG,BIG kitten hugs and
bites(mreow idea of kisses).

I just got through reading this note in it's entirety and am devastated
to hear the news of Michaela. How sad for all of you!
Please accept my deepest sympathy - tell your Mom our hearts go out to
all who loved her.

| Thank you all SO much for your messages of sympathy. Michaela's death
has really thrown me for a loop. Her loving warm personality was one
like I've never seen on any other cat. Quite a few times mom would be
sitting in her chair in the living room and micki would just jump up on
the arm of the chair and look at mom as if to say, "Pet me! PLEASE??"
And then there was her "happy feet". I'm sure that you all know what
that is. When they are so content that they start to kneed on any body
part they can find (favorite places for Michaela were on your arms or
your chest. OUCH! that hurts!!!).
Mother has been doing much better. She still misses Michaela very much
as do I. I have printed out your messages, removed the headers, and
given them to my mother. She has put them with all of the rest of the
memorabilia that she has of Michaela.
Dr. Mulcahey called us last night. She says that there was no evidence
of a heart attack at all. She also says that there wasn't any evidence
of FIP either. She's shocked. She can't understand how Micki could
have declined SO fast. She has sent out her organs to a laboratory to
see what kind of results they come up with.
Again, thank you everyone for the warmth that you've given me. It's
REALLY helped me. You all have done so much for me since what happened
two years ago. I'll forever be in debt to all of you.

| We're so sorry about Michaela. This sounds a lot like
what happened with my Pussycat, although from a different
cause (feLV). He roused himself enough to chitter at some
birds just hours before he had to be put to sleep. I'm sure
Michaela is in heaven with all our other animal and people
loved ones.

| We got a report back on what happened to Michaela.
It seems that she died of a blood clot in her lung. This explains her
sudden downfall. There was some bacteria around it so they believe
that it broke loose from the liver. It got lodged DEEP in her lung so
even an x-ray couldn't have picked it up.
The really sad part about this is that the hepetitis WAS responding to
treatment. It had gone from acute hepetitis to semi-acute hepetitis.
If she hadn't had that blood clot she would have been fine. The
doctor thinks that it might have gotten loose when she jumped into the
attendant's arms that morning.
Well, at least now we know what it was. We should be getting the
complete report some time tomorrow.
