4154.0. "health risks from new kitten?" by SALSA::PARKS () Thu Nov 08 1990 16:41

Hi,

I realize there are a lot of notes in here about new kittens(because I looked
at them all), but I can't find one that directly addresses my kitten.

First let me re-introduce myself:
I'm usually a reader with an occasional note.
I currently have one cat, Tsunami, 3 yrs old.
I also received help from feliners in placing a stranded mother cat and three
feral babies.
Now that you know who I am...

We just bought a house and
I have finally convinced my SO that another cat(kitten) is a good idea!!!!
(YAAYY!! Tsunami and Kala(dog) will have another playmate!!)
I have read all the notes about introducing a kitten, so I know what to expect
as far as behavior goes, but what about health risks?

Problem:
My cat has been vaccinated and the mother of the kitten has been vaccinated.
My vet says they can't test for feline luke until the kitten is 9 weeks
old. The person with the kittens wants to "get rid of them" at 6 weeks
(don't blame me, I'm trying to do my part by taking one).
The mother is an in/out door cat(mostly in) that seems to be well taken care
of(except for not being spayed).

Question:
Should I put the cat and kitten together before the kitten is 9 weeks and
tested? Will my cat be OK since she is vaccinated(if the kitten is positive).
Should I isolate the kitten until it is tested? :^( (it will be looked at
for obvious problems before I take it home).

Thanks for all replies,
Becky, Nami, and Kala(the dog)

P.S. I will introduce my new kid as soon as she arrives. The kittens are only
2 weeks old now.

You should keep the new kitten isolated from your other cat until it
    is tested.

OK,
I'll keep the kitten isolated. I thought that would have to be the case.

In the mean time, I need help with a name.
I've been to see the kittens and have one picked out. It's mostly black with
brown and white on the face in tabby-like markings. It's tummy and legs
are white and it has tannish-brown patches on the rest of the body. Of course
it's only 2 weeks old, so that might change a little.
I think the kitten is a girl and we like to name our cats after
significant things happening in our lives at the time.
(We got Tsunami soon after a trip to Hawaii.)

Anyway, the most significant thing happening now is that we just bought
our first house. The only name I can think of is Escrow, and that's not a very
positive name, besides it sounds more like a boy.
I'm hoping the clever feliners can help me out here.

Any suggestions?

Becky and Tsunami

P.S. You can take your time being creative, I still won't get it for 5
more weeks.(counting days)

Well, I suppose "American Dream" might qualify. Or Sweetie as in
    Home, Sweet home.

Nancy,

Thank you, I was beginning to wonder if I would get any responses.

I like "American Dream"(Dream for short).
Made me think of another one for a boy, "Castle" as in your home is your castle.
Or for a girl, "Casa" or "Casita" (Spanish for house or small house).

What kind of house did you buy? You can play around with these!!

        Cottage - Cotts for short
Cape - Capette for a girl
Garrison - cute for a boy
        Saltbox - Salty

What street do you live on? Maybe you can do something with that.

Sandy (who just named her new one "Dewey"...because that is the
name of the street he was found on.....Yup another stray!)

And depending on how your homeowning goes, you could use:

    Money Pit ;-) Hopefully not.

RE: .6
It is a large one story block house on an acre bordering on a desert wildlife
refuge and right by the mountains. (Tucson, Arizona)
Of course the desert here is full of life. I've seen coyote, quail, rabbits,
squirrels, chipmunks, javelina, wookpeckers, small owls and even deer to name
a few).

Our street is Ocotillo (I was thinking of Ocotilla for a girl w/ Tia for short).

RE: .5?
I like Villa.
RE: .7?
"Money Pit"? I hope not!

I am going to print this list of names (when it's finished) and see which
one fits the little cutie when I get her home.

This is fun, I've been wanting another kitty for a year!

WARNING:

if you live around owls, keep your cats IN. They are viable prey for most
varieties of owls and some owls hunt in daylight as well as at night.
Be careful.

RE: a few back...

Don't worry, the kitty won't go out unless it's in the FULLY enclosed
dog run! It's not the owls I worry about(they're VERY small), but the
coyotes. There is a pack of seven that live just on the other side of the
fence to the wildlife refuge. The fence is only barbed wire.
You should see everything we went through to make sure the coyotes wouldn't
get our dog or cat. They have a door to the run so we had to be sure
that they'd be safe in it when we weren't around. The neighbors probably
think we're crazy. We put up a 6 ft. chain-link run with chicken wire over
the top and fencing material on the ground all around. They can't go over
and can't go under. My fiance' says all we need now is the machine-gun
towers.

cats and dogs are notoriously poor shots, so it is probably wise to forgo
the armaments....8^}

Sounds like a lovely place for a kitten to enjoy the breeze...

I know this note is relatively old, but I thought I'd give you an update...
I've convinced them to keep the kitten until she's nine weeks. It was hard
to do because I want her now! but this way she will be tested before she
is even introduced into the house. She will be well taken care of there,
the 3 kids have picked her as their favorite and they're calling her Zero
for the white circles on her sides.

Also, My SO and I are formalizing our engagement and have even set
a wedding date, so I want to switch gears on you...
Can anyone think of a good name pertaining to engagement?!!!!!

Some more on the kitten now that she's getting some purrsonality of her own...
she's the first to do everything! including attacking the german shepherd's
nose! She's full of spunk, but also loves to cuddle. She attacks the
small dogs ears when he's laying down and holds on when he stands up(what
am I getting myself into?... FUN!)
