4130.0. "My cat is skitzo!!!" by FRAGLE::PELUSO (PAINTS; color your corral) Fri Nov 02 1990 12:53

I suspect Nippa, in her own way, has been trying to tell me
something is wrong lately.....and I can't figure out what it could
be. Regardless, we *are* going to the vet at 3:15 today.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has experienced the following:

Lately, Nippa has been nasty.....now, she is a tortie...so the
multiple purrsonality does come out on a frequent basis....however
	it's gone beyond that.

Lately, she'll rush to great me, rub against me, but if I touch her,
she'll growl and hiss. She does not want any human contact
what-so-ever. This is not like her....although human contact
is only acceptable when she requests it.....but our routine for
the past 4 years is I come home, she greets me, I pick her up, and she
tells me about her day. This new behavior has been going on for
a few weeks ....and it really isn't her nature. She's even taken
a chunk out of my wrist.....and she's ever done that before!

This morning, I decided her behavior was uncalled for, and shut her
in the basement to cool off. I went downstairs about an hour later,
and she started growling again. I went to offer my hand, and she
let out this heart wrenching, pitiful cry (the one that says, that's it
	we're going to the vet).

	My parents think I'm crazy.....they don't see any difference....however
I have that gut feeling that she isn't well.

The only physical factors I can think of, which have changed
recently, and happen to coincide w/ her behavior change are
new neighbors moving in with a cat friendly golden retriever, who
pees on my tires. My brother just moved out, but he never paid
much attention to her, and I started wearing the `fall perfume'(which
I stopped to see if it was a factor).

I really don't understand this....she sleeps by my head every night,
	and purrs up a storm......and she's always greeting me.....but I
really can't figure out this change of behavior.

	Any ideas?

4130.1To the Vet....WILLEE::MERRITTFri Nov 02 1990 12:5912
Michele, I'm glad your going to the Vet. My guess is that she
is not feeling well or something hurts on her. Barkley was a
bear to live with when he had his abscess. He went after the
other cats, didn't want to be touched and hissed at me. (Unlike
his normal behaviour.) I knew something was wrong but couldn't
figure it out until the abscess broke.

Good luck and please keep us posted. My thoughts are with you and
    Nippa.

4130.2Wing Tu!AKOV13::FALLONIsn't that a Mooncat?Fri Nov 02 1990 13:1411
My cat, Wing, has shown similar behaviour for about a year now. She
was always lovable and huggable. Every time you pick he up now she
growls and snorts. She will even take a swipe at you. I have always
figured it was because Ruby terrorizes her, but have not felt
comfortable completely with this answer. She has been to the vets and
everyting seems okay. Is there something I should be looking for more
closely(like something wrong on her body)? I still pick her up and
    give hugs and kisses anyway!
Let us know what the results are!

4130.4It hurts here, and thereCSS::IVESFri Nov 02 1990 15:329
From reading some of the other notes on unusual animal behavior
this sounds like a thyroid problem. If the vet doesn't find
something right away maybe you could suggest your kitty be tested
for this. Knowing first hand how a thyroid condition can throw
    off a personality it's worth a try.

Hope we have news on monday.

4130.5misplaced aggressionFRAGLE::PELUSOPAINTS; color your corralFri Nov 02 1990 16:1833
    I'm relieved.......I think.

Dr. Stuer gave Nippa the most through exam she'd ever gotten. The
verdict......physically, she's in perfect health. Mentally, she may
    have a problem, specifically.....misplaced aggression.

We went through all the changes I've noticed in the past month.
Like I said in .0, a new neighbor moved in....w/ a dog, AND a cat.
There has never been a cat this close to her in all her life....and
that particular yard WAS her territory.

He thinks she is upset over this cat, but can't take the aggression
out on this cat, so she's taking it out on me!

His solution, was to leave her alone. Let her follow her own schedule.
Don't change anything! In a week, gradually add more contact. If she
can't accept this, then he will put her on kitty valium for a
undetermined period - to help her deal w/ the new stress. He said in
most cases this will work, if not, we can try additional remedies.

He also said there are some cats who just won't get along.

I feel alot better, $24 broker, but I was worried she might have a
brain tumor or something (I know of 2 horses which had them and acted
    real skitzo before they died).

Dr. S. said she has gotten a little heavy..er, ah...fat! So now we
have to start feeding Iams Lite....HA!!!!!! I think it is too much
    pizza and beer!

    Thanks guyes....

    Hi Michelle.

Glad to hear that Nippa is okay. As discussed previously, I really
like Dr. Stuer. And $24 isn't a bad price! I spent $40 last night on
a housecall because I cut poor Murdock's claw deep into the quick when
he tried to squirm out of my friend's arms. It wouldn't stop bleeding
and she had to come to the house and clot it up (the vet I spoke about
in the vet note). She is nice, but I was surprised at the cost. She
charged me $10 for the housecall, $20 emergency fee and $10 to pressure
bandage his foot.... which he promptly removed less than 5 minutes
after she left.... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I almost glued it back on!!

    Hope Nippa gets better soon.

4130.7those territorial females!CSCOAC::MCFARLAND_Dbo knows windows 3.0...?Sun Nov 04 1990 21:4023
    sending "peaceful" thoughts to nippa...

my stella was extremely territorial (for an indoor cat!) back at the
old apt. the entire front lawn, down to the parking lot, was *her*
territory, and WOE be unto any cat who dared walk on stella's lawn.
she would run back and forth from the window in the bedroom to the
sliding door in the living room (to get a "better look" at the
interloper.) she would growl and hiss something fierce. one night, i
made the gross mistake of trying to pick her up from the window ledge
when she was in the throws of growling at her outside foe, and got the
worst scratch ever in my life. blood spurted on curtains, computer,
bedspread, ack! my sweet little girl was transformed into a totally
different cat whenever she saw another cat outside...

which made it all the more remarkable that she accepted stanley the
stray from the minute he took up residence on our deck. but that's
    another story...

    good luck!

diane, stella (i hiss at growl with the best of them!) & stanley (i only
    hiss at the vet!)

4130.8She's doing better.....yeah!FRAGLE::PELUSOPAINTS; color your corralMon Nov 05 1990 08:4025
    Thanks guyes!

I have been following Dr. Stuer's advice and have seen some
improvement. hopefully it will continue to move forward.

    RE: .6

Wow! I almost called you for her number......I decided against it
because I knew WAH would probably have access to test equipment
    to perform tests if needed.

Also, when I called, I told them I was short this week and offered
to pay up to $50, and the balance next week. They said they would
prefer a post dated check fro the whole amount. Not bad, at least
they bent to the rules a little.

ANother plug for WAH, their renovations are quite nice! There are
separate entrances and waiting areas for dogs and cats. THe staff was
very plesant, and had the `concerned attitude' which I appreciated
(although they probably think I nuts....;^)

Anyway, if you have problems w/ the bandage, I had a lesson on
semi permant bandages when Nippa had her stiches......it didn't come
    off.....
