4116.0. "Small bend at tip of tail" by HDLITE::SCOTT () Mon Oct 29 1990 09:41

    Rici has a little "kink" in his tail, about 1/2-1" from the tip.
    I suspect he got it caught2 somewhere. He experiences some discomfort
    if we go near it.

    Is this something that needs veterinary attention? Can it be "fixed"
    with a cast?

    Thanks!

    One of my cats has something similar, and when I asked the vet about it
    he said that sometimes they get bent that way from being in a crowded
    womb; originally I thought it had been caught in something.

    However...if your cat is experiencing discomfort, I would definitely
    get it checked out just in case, as it may very well have been caught
    in a door, etc. I don't think fixing (straightening) it out is
    necessary, but the vet should decide that.
4116.2Vet says "Let it Heal"HDLITE::SCOTTMon Oct 29 1990 10:5811
    I called the vet. It seems I have two options:

    1. Leave it alone and let it heal.

    2. Amputate the tip of his tail. (This is necessary only if the tail
        has been broken far enough down that it interferes with kitty
        functions.)

    I pick 1.

4116.3NO ASPIRIN!HDLITE::SCOTTMon Oct 29 1990 10:595
    Oh yeah, the vet also warned against giving aspirin for his discomfort.
    I would NEVER think to do this, especially without calling him first.

    However, for those you don't know, aspirin can be very harmful to
    kitties.

    I had heard that asprin is toxic to cats. Its not so great for
    humans either. One thing alot of folks don't know is that asprin
    is an anticoagulant. You can achieve the same results you'd want
    from asprin by taking tylenol or ibuprofin.

    I should add that Tylenol will bring down a fever and/or relieve pain
    but is not anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofin is anti-inflammatory and
    will relieve pain but will have no effect on fever. Ibu is also
    a mild muscle relaxant which makes it perfect for cramps or muscle
    pain. But I digress.....back to the tale of the tail!
4116.6NRADM::ROBINSONdid i tell you this already???Tue Oct 30 1990 07:548

    	Just to head off any confusion - do NOT give Tylenol
    	to your cat, my vet says it can be fatal. I would assume
    	the same cautions apply to all `people pills' when it
    	comes to cats...

    I never head that about Tylenol!! Thanks for the info.

    Actually my note was more for people's benefits than cats. I advise
    against medicating your cat without the vet's advice.
