| Hello,
I don't think it's the spider plant that's highly toxic. Other things
like poinsetta's etc. There should be notes on bad plants.
A spider plant (to be nibbled upon) is like eating lawn grass. It
helps to move furballs through and I think gives veggie vitamins.
During the winter my cat Rocky nibbles on my spiders, as he doesn't get
to have green grass from outside.
Just my experience...

| Pet supply stores also carry "Kitty Greens" which is a plant you can
grow indoors for your cat to nibble on. I've also found breaking up
pieces of lettuce and mixing it in their canned food works well with my
six. After my spider plants took a beating one season (and the cats
would throw up afterwards), I decided not to keep plants in the apt.
I also treat them to Laxatone during their weekly grooming as a
hairball preventative. This you can find at your pet supply store or
vet's, sometimes under a different brand name. My kids like this part
of grooming best! ;-)

Marilyn,
Thank you for your well wishes and the kiss and hug for Gizmo!
He looks just like a gremlin so I thought Gizmo was appropriate. I also
thought I was being semi-original, but apparently my vet has 60 other Persians
and Himalayans named Gizmo! Oh well!
Susan and Pat, Thank you for the information on the Spider plant and
kitty greens. The breeder suggested petromalt to prevent hairballs. Is that
the same as Laxatone?
Thanks again and I'm sure I'll 'talk' to you soon in other notes!

4084.7 | They're pretty much the same | TPMARY::TAMIR | ACMS design while-u-wait | Thu Oct 18 1990 12:46 | 9 |
| Petromalt is the same as Laxatone which is the same as Femalt. In a
recently conducted taste test, 4 out of 5 felines (in my house)
preferred the taste of Femalt (malt flavour, not fish). If you were
to ask my Honey The Himalayan about spider plants, he'd tell you
they are delicious. If you ask Mary the House Cleaner, I'd tell
you that spider plant spit-up stains are difficult to remove!!
The plant is now gone, but not before Honey ate (and spit up) most of it...

RE: Gizmo
You could name him Mogwhy (that's how it is pronounced, have
no idea how to spellit). Anyhow, Gizmo, from the movie Gremlins,
was a creature called a Mogwhy. Maybe it is spelled Moguay?

Nippa was almost named Gizmo, the torti markings on her precious face
reminded me of him so much.......but my ex *wanted* to name her, so now
she has a silly name. I wanted to throw out the name when I threw him
out, but unfortunatly it stuck. I still like the name gizmo!

| I have the impression that spider plants are slightly poisonous to
cats. Boston ferns are okay.

| I think if spider plants were poision to cats we'd all have a
bunch of dead cats.......
Ours have eaten the tips off for years. I can't remember what it
was like to have a nice spider with "natural" ends.
However, they do love the store bought grass you can grow but it
doesn't last long when the gang gets at it.

| Heck who needs the tips of spider plants...they only brown anyway!!
For some reason all of my cats do not touch my plants. I have no
idea why (knock on wood) because they are into everything else.
Especially my Poco who is a hellion.
